We Can Do It (Stargate Pt 2)
AN: This is going a bit long so there will a part 3 to conclude this little venture.
I hurriedly packed up the books and papers that were in our workspace as Daniel did the same. My head spins as Catherine walks over to Daniel and taps him on the shoulder.
"Jackson." She said. He turns in a hurry and smiles at her.
"Hello." He stutters out. "Hi." She's holding something in her hands and his eyes train down to it.
"I have something for you." Catherine started to hand it to him.
"No." Daniel's eyes shifted between the two of us. "I..." I just smiled at him and shook my head.
"Yes." Catherine pressed it into his hands. "I found it with Stargate when I was a child. It has brought me luck." Daniel shook his head again.
"I can't." He whispered. Looking from the symbol on the necklace to me and back to Catherine.
"Then (Y/N)." Catherine turned towards me and held out her hand. I put my hand in hers and let her put it in Daniel's. "Keep it safe for me. You can bring it back to me." I nodded as Daniel gently put it over my head. He lingered on the eye of Ra symbol as Catherine took her leave.
"Eye of Ra." He whispered. I nodded, my gaze on the symbol as well.
"It's not really a protection symbol unless you count it's occult status." I rambled, the close proximity to Daniel finally getting the better of me. Daniel lowered the symbol and finally caught my gaze.
"Are you ready for this?" He asked. I shook my head and grabbed his hand.
"Not even close." I whispered back, the fear finally creeping into my voice. Daniel gave my hand a reassuring squeeze.
"I'm not either." He admitted. "But we'll get through this together." I nodded as I held his hand tightly. He leaned down and rested his head against mine. "We have each other and that's all that really matters." I closed my eyes as his breath fanned my face.
"That's all that matters." I agreed. Daniel gave my forehead a quick peck before turning back to finish our packing. It wasn't long before we were standing at the end of the line of military personnel.
"Ten-hut!" Out of instinct I snapped to attention. Daniel tried to hide his smirk but failed. I elbowed him before relaxing.
"If anyone has anything to say, now's the time to say it." O'Neil called. I was about to make a joke about it being too late to go to the bathroom when Daniel sneezed. I bit back my laughter as O'Neil shook his head at us. We followed the group into the Gateroom and the two of us watched as each of the men went through the Gate. I looked behind us at the control room to see Catherine raising her hand in farewell. I raised my own before turning back to Daniel.
"I'm not so sure about this any more Danny." I whispered. Daniel took my hand and squeezed.
"We can do this (Y/N/N)." Daniel whispered back. I nodded as we walked up to the event horizon. I looked over at Daniel before reaching out to touch the horizon. Daniel did the same. We smiled at each other before closing our eyes and walking through.
"Jackson! (Y/L/N)! It's all right. It's over." O'Neil said as he helped us sit up. He looked over at one of the other military guys. "Watch them."
"Listen. Keep moving. It wears off in a minute." Daniel stood up and helped me up, keeping a firm grasp on my arm as he stumbled down the steps. I held onto him just as tightly, hoping to keep myself upright as my head swam.
"What a rush." I heard someone else say as I shook my head to clear it. I looked over at Daniel and grinned.
"We did it." I whispered in excitement. Daniel smiled back at me.
"We're on an alien planet." He finished my sentence. We hugged each other before we heard O'Neil calling out again.
"Prepare to move out." He called. Daniel and I followed the teams as they left the building we were in. We glanced at each other as the finally started to file out of the area. Daniel kept a hold on my hand as I moved closer to the walls to study them.
"Daniel, I don't understand this." I said as I ran my fingers along it. He shrugged as he moved closer to inspect the same portion of wall. We finally walked out into the bright sunlight and made our way down from the building. O'Neil turned to look at us and Daniel turned to look behind him.
"I knew it!" he cried out, tugging on my hand. I turned with him and gasped as I saw that the building we had been in wasn't a building at all. It was a pyramid, flanked by three moons. Daniel tugged on my hand eagerly and dragged me around the pyramid while still keeping O'Neil and the other military personnel in view. "I can't believe this (Y/N). It's really real." I laughed as I stopped him with a hand to my chest.
"You better believe it Doctor Jackson." I smiled up at him, reaching up to brush away a stray hair that hung in his face. "I expect to be included on this paper though. We made this discovery together. We better present this discovery together." Daniel nodded in agreement.
"I wouldn't dream of leaving you out of this." He said as he pulled me in for a hug. "Never in a million years." Pulling back, we continued our exploration of the pyramid before making our way over to the camp that was slowly forming.
"Jackson. (Y/L/N). Start working on the Stargate." O'Neil said to us. I looked over at Daniel as O'Neil started to walk away.
"We're gonna need more time Colonel." I said as I took off after him.
"I mean, there's bound to be more structures here." Daniel followed.
"Or some other traces of civilization." I finished.
"Not this trip." O'Neil said. "Just get back in there and reestablish contact." I shared a look with Daniel.
"Well, it's not that easy. This is a replica of the great pyramid of Giza." Daniel said, looking at me.
"For all we know it could be the original great pyramid of Giza." I cut in.
"We're not gonna find any hieroglyphic inscriptions or carved relief." Daniel looked at O'Neil. "I mean, we really need to look around more."
"Your job here is to realign the Stargate." O'Neil turned on us. "Can you do that or not?" Daniel and I looked at each other and nodded.
"We can't." We said. Everyone looked at us surprised.
"You can't or you won't?" O'Neil growled. Daniel gulped and I stood up a little straighter.
"We can decipher the symbols on the Stargate, but we need an order of alignment." I took a step forward, feeling Daniel's hand move to my back and grip the loose material there. "Now those coordinates were marked on tablets back on Earth and there must be something like that here. We just need to find it."
"Find it? What do you mean, find it?" One of the military men asked. "You didn't say anything about finding anything."
"Well, we assumed the tablets would be here." Daniel spoke up. "I mean right here." I nodded.
"You assumed?" O'Neil ground out. I could see the pulse point at his temple and I raised an eyebrow in defiance.
"Catherine said that the tablets were found under the Stargate back on Earth. It would make sense that it would be right here with this one." I backed Daniel up.
"You're a lying son of a bitch!" The military man went after Daniel and shoved him. Daniel fell back and pulled me with him because of his grip on my shirt. I landed on top of him. "You two didn't say a word about finding anything." Daniel and I barely heard O'Neil calling out the military man. I was trying to keep the blush from forming on my cheeks at the predicament that Daniel and I now found ourselves in. The way we had fallen had caused me to turn and land on top of him. Our noses touched as we stared at each other wide eyed. O'Neil continued barking orders as I cleared my throat and carefully got up. I offered Daniel a hand and helped him up as well.
"You ok?" I asked as he brushed his hands down the back of his pants. He nodded as he reached up to brush some sand from my cheek.
"I'm fine." He smiled. "Are you ok?" I nodded, running a hand through my hair to keep it out of my face. We turned to watch the rest of our little group follow O'Neil's orders.
"We better get set up." I bit my lip as I headed towards our packs. "Before O'Neil gets another reason to go after us." I set about setting up our little station next to the Stargate. Daniel ventured outside. "Daniel?" I asked. I looked up when he didn't answer and quickly followed him to make sure that he didn't get into trouble. Daniel was dragging his pack behind him and I sighed as I watched him attempt to figure out where he was going to set his stuff up. He turned around and smiled at me as he motioned to the tents that the military men had set up.
"It's a nice tent." I laughed and shook my head at him. He truly was adorable. "Oh! We each get a tent. That's nice." He turned back around to see where he was going and I couldn't keep the love I had for him off my face. I smiled to myself as I finally accepted the feelings that had been bubbling to the surface since I had seen him standing in front of the tablet back at base. Eventually Daniel sat down in the sand away from the others. I trudged up the small hill and stood next to him.
"You were brushing this shit off a while ago and now you want to sit in it?" I chuckled as I looked down at him. Daniel smiled up at me and I couldn't keep the comparison of a kid at christmas out of my mind. "Can I join you?" Instead of answering, Daniel reached up and grabbed my hand. I looked at him slightly confused. He tugged on my hand and I stumbled as I lost my balance. I landed in the sand next to him, Daniel's body keeping me from completely face planting into the sand. "What's got you so excited?" I asked as I settled next to him with my head on his shoulder. Daniel put his arm around me and pressed a kiss to the top of my head, a move that was fairly normal for us but still brought a blush to my cheeks.
"I'm right (Y/N)." He sighed. "I'm actually right and we're going to prove it." I felt Daniel pressed his cheek to the top of my head. "It's a little much to take in." I turned to bury my face into Daniel's chest. As I did so, the memory of him without a shirt came to the front of my mind. My blush deepened as I curled further into his chest.
"Tell me about it." I answered. "It's like all our wildest dreams are coming true and we can't wait to share it with someone." Daniel's arm tightened around me as he nodded. Before long, he grew bored and started to go through the various pockets in his vest. I laughed as he started throwing things away.
"What the hell is that?" he asked me as he pulled something out of one of my pockets. I laughed as I grabbed it.
"That's a flare and since you threw yours into the desert, I will be keeping that." I said as I put it back in the pocket. "You, sir, can have my candy." I laughed as Daniel's eyes lit up and he took the candy bars from my hand. "God you are such a child Danny." He stuck his tongue out at me before starting to eat one of them.
"They give us everything but sunblock." He scowled at me as I giggled. A shadow fell over us and I tapped him on the shoulder while looking up at one of O'Neil's second in commands. "Hi." Daniel looked at me nervously when he noticed that our suitcases were in the man's hands.
"Isn't there something you two should be doing right now?" He asked. Daniel looked up at him again. "Like getting us out of here?" The suitcases were thrown at us and Daniel pulled me down to avoid getting hit. As the man walked away, Daniel and I stood up to start collecting our belongings that were now scattered around the desert.
"Have I mentioned lately that I hate the military?" I grumbled as I sat down in the sand again with a scowl on my face. I clutched the group of books I had collected while Daniel carefully sat down next to me.
"Yeah." Daniel bumped his shoulder with mine. "But I never tire of hearing it." I rested my head on his shoulder as Daniel started to eat another candy bar.
"Hey, bottomless pit." I said as I noticed tracks in the sand. "What does that belong to?" Daniel shrugged as he helped me up again. We followed the tracks before finding a large animal eating something.
"It must be civilized." Daniel said as he carefully approached it. "It has a harness." I nodded as I followed him at a distance. "It's okay. That's a good boy." I watched Daniel with caution as he held out his hand, palm up.
"Just because it has a harness doesn't mean that it is civilized Danny." I warned. "Be careful." Daniel throws a smile over his shoulder at me before turning back to the animal.
"What?" Daniel watched as the animal nudged his hand. He looked down and realized he was still holding the candy bar. "You want some of this?" Daniel broke off a piece of the bar and held up out. "Here you go." The animal gently took it from his hand and ate it. "You like that? There you go." I smiled as I moved closer. Daniel held out his hand for me and I took it. He gently pulled my hand until I had touched the animal. I smiled at Daniel as I started to pet it. "Not so bad right?" he murmured as he put his hand next to mine. I shook my head.
"Not so bad." I gazed up at him, knowing my gaze was full of love and admiration. We started to lean into each other but were jolted back by O'Neil coming up the hill.
"I wouldn't feed that thing!" O'Neil called out to us. Daniel sighed and held up part of it's harness.
"It's got a harness!" he called back. "It's domesticated!" We continue to pet the animal before it rears at O'Neil. The animal takes off and we back up. I share a look with Daniel before his feet are pulled out from under him by the harness that he had been so adamant about.
"Daniel!" I call as I start running after the two.
"Aw, damn it!" O'Neil yells as he takes off as well. We follow the animal until it drops out of our sight. "I told you two not to play around with it. Now look what happened." I scowled at O'Neil as he caught up with me and slowed to a walk.
"And none of this would have happened if you had just let us explore to begin with." I shot back. "Better yet. If you had given your men better orders to leave us alone and not throw our belongings all over the desert this wouldn't have happened." I whirled around to face O'Neil.
"Duly noted (Y/L/N)." O'Neil scowled. I huffed and continued to follow the tracks, hoping that we found Daniel soon. We reached him just as he was coming to. I ran over to him and knelt by his side, ignoring the fact that he was now covered in the animal's saliva and the foul smell of said animal.
"You ok Daniel?" I asked as I brushed some of his hair out of his face. He nodded as he slowly got up. "You sure?" I shrug out of my jacket and hold it out to him.
"Yeah.. Get away from me" He takes my jacket and wipes his face with it as he moved away from the animal. I smiled a little as he handed the ruined jacket to one of the men that had followed O'Neil. "I will never do that again." I laughed as I handed him his glasses.
"I don't want to say I didn't warn you." I smiled as he looked up at me from behind his glasses. "But I told you so." Daniel wrapped his arm around my neck and pulled me into him.
"I thought you weren't going to say it." His laughter rang out as I grabbed the back of his shirt and his pant leg.
"Well I did." I gave a slight tug as a warning. Daniel didn't seem to get it as he continued laughing. "Wanna let me go or do you want to eat sand again?" I joked as I tugged a little harder. Daniel let go of me and shook his head as I pushed the hair out of my eyes.
"What are they looking at?" Daniel asked as we joined O'Neil and his men on the hill. I shrugged as we looked down at the tiny camp that the men were aiming their guns at. There was a commotion as the people in the camp spotted us. We all headed down the hill. I stuck close to Daniel as we neared the growing crowd.
"All right Jackson." O'Neil pushed him forward. "You're on." Daniel whipped to look at O'Neil. I bit my lip to hide my laugh.
"Me?!" He asked.
"You're the linguist." O'Neil pushed. "Try to talk to them." I snickered behind my hand as Daniel took a hesitant step forward. "You too (Y/L/N)." Daniel looked at me and took my hand.
"Uh, hi." Daniel held up a hand in greeting. I raised my hand as well. One of the workers said something and bowed to us. The other workers soon followed suit.
"What the hell did you say to him?" O'Neil asked us. Daniel and I looked at each other.
"Nothing." We said. O'Neil walked over to one of the workers and held out his hand.
"Hey." He slowly moved his hand. "It's ok." He motions for the kid to stand up. The kid does and hesitantly takes in O'Neil before looking over at Daniel and I. I was playing with Catherine's necklace, trying to calm my nerves while Daniel rubbed circles into the back of my hand. "Hey. See. It's ok. It's ok." The kid looked at me nervously. "See? Huh?" O'Neil reaches out and shakes the kid's hand. I take a step forward to stop him but Daniel stops me.
"Let's see what happens." He whispered to me.
"But you know that kid is going to run off." I whispered back. "Besides he keeps looking at me. It's a little unnerving." Daniel nods as he squeezes my hand. True to my word, the kid runs off and O'Neil stands there stunned.
"What did you say to him?" I asked. Daniel chuckled at how I threw O'Neil's own words back at him. The workers parted as a new group came our way. The person who appeared to be in charge started talking to Daniel and I. We looked at each other and shook our heads.
"We can't make it out." I whispered. "It sounds familiar." I looked at Daniel.
"A bit like Berber. Maybe Chadic or Omotic." Daniel nodded. The person in charge gained our attention again, miming eating. He said something and I looked at Daniel. Daniel looked down at me and attempted to copy what the leader had said.
"Apparently you said that right." I whispered as the leader turned back to his people.
"What's that mean?" Someone asked. Daniel scoffed.
"I have no idea." Daniel muttered. The leader turns back to us and says something. He bowed and made a gesture to follow him. "He's inviting us to go with him." I nodded as Daniel and I started to follow him.
"How can you be so sure?" Someone asked. I giggled and Daniel turned around.
"Because he's..." Daniel made the same gesture as the leader. "Inviting us to go with him." I openly laughed at the soldier as Daniel put his arm around me and led us off to follow the leader.
