We Can Do It (Stargate Pt 1)

AN: There will be a part 2 of when they go through the gate. Coming soon.

Racing down the halls, I barely held onto the papers under my arms. I silently cursed the military and anyone who was a part of it. Not one of them had told me that there was a meeting nor that there was a new archeologist being brought into the base to attempt to decode the cartouche. I burst through the doors in a flurry of paper and sound.

"Sorry! No one told me he was....." I trailed off as everyone looked at me. It didn't matter because only one person was looking at me like I had something interesting to say. Blue eyes wide, eyebrows nearly at his blond hairline, and fighting back a smile. "Here." I tried to fight the smile that was threatening to break out but I was having a hard time. "Or that he was Dr. Daniel Jackson." Daniel stood there staring at me, seemingly fighting the urge to run over to me and help me pick up all the papers I had dropped. My smile finally broke through and I could see the strain taking its toll on him. He finally broke into a soft smile and his piercing gaze softened.

"Come here (Y/N)." He waved me over and I dropped the remaining papers in my arms. To everyone else it must have looked like a crazy person running through an explosion of paper but to Daniel it must have looked like an excited friend overjoyed to see him. Being introverts and people that were basically ostracized in their own profession, it wasn't all that hard to understand why Daniel and I had grown close only to disappear from each other's lives not too long after. I never crashed into Daniel when we hugged. He was always ready for me, arms wrapping around my waist, gently pulling me up, making it easier for me to wrap my arms around his neck. Arms tight around me and face in my shoulder, I could finally tell how much of a strain Daniel had put on himself by not running to me the second I burst in the door. "God have I missed you." Muffled words reached my ears as I reached up and buried my fingers in long blond hair.

"Like you wouldn't believe." I responded, my own words muffled by his shoulder. We were in our own little world. We didn't care about anyone else in the room. Pulling away and smiling at him, I took his hand. "Let's get to work." Daniel nodded and joined me next to the cartouche. I pointed to the blackboard with a smile and watched as Daniel's eyes widened. I bit back a laugh as he shook his head and started erasing various words.

"Who the hell translated this?" He mumbled to himself and it grew harder to keep in my laugh. I shot a look at the smaller group that was standing next to our benefactor, Catherine. She was as amused by this as I was.

"What is it supposed to say Doctor Jackson?" She asked, winking at me as I watched Daniel with apt attention. Daniel jerked around after finishing the translation before turning back towards it and translating for the rest of us.

"Well, this should read," He started to gesture at the hieroglyphs. "A million years into the sky is Ra, sun god, sealed and buried for all time. And it's not door to heaven. It's Stargate." Daniel turned back around with a smile. I smiled back and turned to Catherine.

"Best in the business." I joked as I looked up at him and linked our arms. Daniel chuckled as he pulled me closer. I shared a look with Catherine.

"Best get to work you two." She said with a wink. Before long it was just the two of us working long hours of our own choosing trying to figure out the symbols on the cartouche. Daniel leaned over the desk listening to what he had recorded on tape while I sat on the desk next to him. My head was leaned against his back and I was nearly asleep when something came through the haze from the recording.

"I'm never getting paid." I huffed and jolted awake when Daniel moved. "Sorry." Moving around me, Daniel grabbed the coffee pot and turned to walk out of the room. Still not awake I gazed after him.

"Where are you going?" I called out. He held up the pot in response. Giggling, I jumped down from the desk and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes. I gazed up at the cartouche before running a hand through my hair. "He's right. We're never getting paid." I turned as the door slammed shut and Daniel came running into the room with a newspaper. "What is..." I started before he shushed me.

"Orion." He breathed as he used the sharpie in his hand to connect the stars on the newspaper. Quickly climbing the ladder, Daniel held the paper up next to the cartouche and I gasped.

"The carvings aren't hieroglyphs! They're constellations!" I beamed as Daniel climbed back down and started to map out the constellations on the large piece of paper that we had copied the cartouche. I joined him and together we traced out the corresponding carvings and constellations.

"We have to tell Catherine." Daniel breathed as we finished. I was already headed for the telephone attached to the wall.

"Already ahead of you." I picked up the phone and listened to the ringing on the other end.

"O'Neil." The response was not the one I was expecting and I shot Daniel a look from across the room. I started to pull the button-up off as I spoke to the Colonel.

"We've solved it. It's not hieroglyphs. It's constellations. Tell Catherine." I spoke quickly before hanging up the phone, not bothering to wait for his answer. I started back towards Daniel and tossed him his shirt. "Thanks for that by the way. But now it's time to play professional." I grabbed the papers and rolled them up before turning back to Daniel. I tried to hide my gasp when I turned around and saw him pulling his t-shirt over his head. I quickly turned around and busied myself with the papers I hadn't rolled up. My mind was going a mile a minute, alternating between the view I just had and the information that we would need to go over with the colonel and Catherine. I didn't even realize that my hands were shaking until Daniel covered them with his own.

"We've got this." He soothed. "You know we do. We can do this." He waited until I nodded in agreement before scooping up half the papers, grabbing a cup of coffee and waiting for me by the door. I followed his lead and the two of us found a military operative waiting to take us to the conference room. Once there, Daniel and I jumped into our explanation. Catherine was looking at us prouder than I had ever seen her.

"Show them." Colonel O'Neil gestured at Daniel and I.

"Show us what?" Daniel looked over at me. I shrugged as my gaze drifted to Catherine. Daniel and I jumped as the sound of a screen moving resounded through the room. We slowly moved to look out of the window that was opening and we both gasped as we saw the command room appear before us. Not long after we were led into that command room and Daniel gestured to the large circle that took up much of the room below it. "What is that?" I shook my head in shock. I had an idea about what it was but I didn't want to jump to conclusions.

"That's your Stargate." Catherine said before putting her hand on his shoulder. Daniel turned to look at me with the biggest smile on his face.

"It's real." He whispered as he neared me. "It's all real." Our laughter broke the silence that filled the room. Daniel wrapped his arms around me and held me as tight as he could.

"We did it Daniel." I breathed out. "We did it." I buried my face in his chest. I could feel the tears pricking the corners of my eyes. We clung to each other as Catherine prompted the people at the controls to input the symbols Daniel and I had decoded. Daniel pulled me closer to the control panel, watching in awe as everything he worked towards was proved right.

"They are more than symbols and constellations." Catherine explained. "They're coordinates." The three of us shared a look before watching the Stargate activate for the first time. My grip on Daniel tightened as we watched the blue burst envelope the room below. Our awe was only broken by the knowledge of what Catherine had just said.

"Coordinates?" Daniel and I turned around. "But that means that it leads somewhere."

"Where does it go?" I finished Daniel's thought. Catherine smiled at us, ready to answer before Colonel O'Neil jumped in.

"That's what we plan to find out." We turned to watch as the military sent a probe through the gate. We watched as it appeared on the other side. Daniel and I moved closer as we watched the footage from the other side. The video went fuzzy before blacking out completely. We turned towards O'Neil.

"These markings are different. They don't match the symbols on our gate." Daniel said, sharing a look with me.

"That's why we may have to abort. This was meant to be a reconnaissance mission. Once on the other side, we'd have to decipher the markings on that gate in order to dial home and bring the team back." Catherine explained.

"I don't see how we can do that." O'Neil finished. Daniel and I shared a look.

"Well, I can do that." Daniel offered. He shifted towards me and pulled me a little closer. "Well we can do that."

"Are you two sure?" Catherine asked. Daniel and I looked at each other before looking at the Stargate. Smiling, we turned back to each other.

"Positive." We confirmed.

"They're full of shit." O'Neil said to one of the officers as he passed. My eyebrows furrowed and I looked at Daniel. He shook his head.

"You're on the team." The officer said before following O'Neil. Daniel smiled at me before pulling me in for a tight hug.
