Waiting for you
"Alright, are you two ready?" The backstage hand asked, and the two girls nodded back at her. "You still have some time before you're called up. Just stay here, tho."
"Hey, you getting nervous?" Becca came up to the other girl.
"First ever solo, pretty sure I'm more than just nervous. Not to mention our duets, I don't want to mess things up." Cai explained, trying to calm her breathing.
"You'll do amazing. You're my best friend. of course, you'll do nothing short of awesome." Becca tried lifting her spirits.
"You're awesome, Bec." Cai finally got to calm down.
The tent doors were opened, and they were joined by a different group. Dancers, to be precise. They were all wearing streetwear with accents of blue, white, and black, nothing like the formal wear that Becca and Cai were wearing.
"Hey, Courtney, isn't that Cai?" Maya asked, pointing out the short-haired girl, in a black slimming tux that seemed to be pacing back and forth.
"It is. Gods, it's been so long. She's gotten handsome too." Courtney pointed out as she kept staring at the girl. "Do you think she's still single? Maybe we can get together now."
"I can't even remember why you turned her down. She was willing to give you everything, and she wasn't half as bad." Maya wondered out loud. "She's handsome. She's smart, chivalrous, and you could always count on her. You guys even had loads in common."
"I just," Courtney tried to remember but couldn't as she kept staring at the devilishly-looking girl in front of her.
The reason as to why Courtney had rejected Cai all those years ago was because she hadn't figured out her sexuality. It was confusing way back then because her heart told her she liked Cai, but her head told her it couldn't be possible.
Cai was already out, and she was proud of who she was. That's one of the things Courtney always admired about the girl. Cai told her she understood and that coming to terms with who you are isn't something that needs to be rushed. Reassuring Courtney that she would wait for her as long as it took.
"Cai, stop pacing," Becca came up to her again. "Look, you might doubt your talent, but I don't, and I know you are gonna be amazing."
Becca got on her tippy toes to kiss Cai on the cheek. "I believe you are destined for great things, Cai. You need to believe it yourself."
Courtney didn't expect Cai to have moved on, nor did she expect Cai to bend down and kiss the girl's forehead.
"You always know what to say to calm me down." Cai smiled, taking the girl's hand in hers.
"Of course, I would. I know you and I love everything about you." Becca chuckled before continuing. "Now get ready 'cause we're up next."
Becca headed back near the backstage hand, leaving Cai once again. The girl took a deep breath before looking around. Her eyes finally caught Courtney's, and she gave her a small smile before following Becca.
"She's dating now?" Courtney asked herself as she followed Cai.
"Looks like it. Can't say I blame her, though. Waiting for you must've been painful." Maya noted coming up by her side.
Courtney felt her heartbreak at the thought. Cai said she would wait. Why didn't she wait? Courtney was ready to love her with all her heart, but now Cai's heart belonged to someone else.
The dancers watched as the duo performed a song and then a dance. They moved and acted as one, always in synch completely in a trance of what they were doing.
Courtney couldn't help but notice the smile on both their faces as they performed. Cai was happy, happier with this girl than she ever was with her. How could she win her back now? How could she compete with that?
"They're awesome, aren't they?" A guy came up beside the dancers as they continued to watch the performance. "Yeah, my girl always shines bright with Cai by her side. Believe me, I tried, but those two are soulmates."
"Soulmates, huh?" Courtney sounded defeated.
"Wait, your girl?" Maya pointed out, which got Courtney's attention back. "What do you mean your girl?"
"Exactly what I meant. Becca's my girl. I'm her boyfriend, Blue. Nice to meet you all." Blue greeted them with a grin.
"So when you meant soulmates?" Courtney asked.
"Platonic, of course. Becca and Cai are two peas in a pod you can never separate. Many tried before, and they're nowhere to be found now. I've come to terms with it. I might be the love of Becca's life, but I'm no match to her best friend and soulmate." Blue explained watching the two best friends.
"So Cai is single then?" Maya asked, curious about the girl's status.
"Hmm, yes, but not exactly. She's still waiting for someone. She said she won't move on until the girl she's waiting for says otherwise." Blue stated as a matter of fact.
Becca then went off stage, Blue helping her down as it was finally Cai's solo. She turned to see Courtney, and in that instant, she knew this was the girl that stole Cai's heart.
"I'm Becca. You're Courtney, right?" Becca shook her hand as a greeting. "Cai's shown me pictures, and she wouldn't stop talking about the girl that took her breath away."
"Wow, I didn't realize I had that big of an effect on her." Courtney blushed at the thought of Cai praising her.
"That's my best friend for you. Forever the hopeless romantic." Becca smiled proud of the girl Cai was and had become. "Can I just ask when you'll give her your answer? I know she's patient, but eventually, she'll break, and I just want to know if it'll be soon rather than later."
Courtney didn't answer right away. She was mesmerized by Cai's performance. She was singing her heart out as she smiled, facing the crowd.
"Oceans apart day after day, and I slowly go insane.
I hear your voice on the line, but it doesn't stop the pain.
If I see you next to never, how can we say forever?
Wherever you go, whatever you do
I will be right here waiting for you
Whatever it takes or how my heart breaks
I will be right here waiting for you
I took for granted, all the times that I thought would last somehow
I hear your laughter, I taste the tears, but I can't get near you now
Oh, can't you see it, baby. You've got me going crazy
Wherever you go, whatever you do
I will be right here waiting for you
Whatever it takes or how my heart breaks
I will be right here waiting for you
I wonder how we can survive this romance.
But in the end, if I'm with you, I'll take a chance!
Oh, can't you see it, baby.
You've got me going crazy
Wherever you go, whatever you do
I will be right here waiting for you
Whatever it takes or how my heart breaks
I will be right here waiting for you
Waiting for you."
The whole song was dedicated to Courtney, and in that last line, Cai looked over to her and smiled, making the girl swoon. In that moment, Cai didn't have to wait anymore, Courtney was gonna say yes. She loved that girl just as much and would do anything to see the smile on her face.
Cai exited the stage and was face to face with the girl she loved.
"Courtney..."
Not another word was said, Courtney pulled Cai in for a kiss. A long awaited one. Courtney melted into Cai's embrace as the taller girl held her, never wanting to let go. The two eventually parted for air, but they were mesmerized by each other.
"Does that mean?" Cai started looking for an answer.
Courtney nodded, looking up at the hazel eyes she grew to love. "I love you, Cai. Will you please be mine?"
"Yes, yes, yes! A thousand times, yes. I will forever be yours." Cai smiled as she captured Courtney's lips with hers once again, sealing a kiss.
They were intruppted when the crowd requested another song from the duo. Cai chuckled at the interruption as Courtney stepped back standing beside Blue, still smiling from the moment the two shared.
Cai held her hand out, and Becca gladly took it as they reentered the stage. Cai will always love sharing the stage with her soulmate, Becca. Leading her best friend to center stage for their final song.
The duo sang and danced like they have always done. As if they were kids all over again. Smiles on their faces as they entertained the audience.
"So, I'll be seeing you at the house more often then?" Blue said out of nowhere.
"What?" Courtney asked out of confusion.
"You and Cai are together now, so that means we'll be in each others lives more often than not. Like I said earlier, those two can't be separated." Blue explained before continuing. "By the way, that look on your face as you watch Cai, it's the same one I have whenever I watch Becca. I'm sure you and I will get along. We do love our girls."
Blue smiled as he watched his girl dance with her best friend.
Courtney looked over at her girl. Her girl. It was nice to hear, and it made her heart flutter at the thought that Cai was hers. Finally, hers.
