The Pier

"Come on, Ralph! Just let Ava sleep on your shoulder!" Teases from the group at the back of the bus came.

"It's practically harmless." One shouted.

"She's tired. Let her rest!" A second yelled.

"Friends do it all the time!" Another called out.

Becca chuckled at the bright red cheeks of the two people they had been teasing. Thinking that it would be fun, she joined in.

"It's not that hard, you guys," Becca said as she leaned over to Cady.

The taller girl had no idea what was happening because she had been listening to music the whole time, but when she felt Becca lean closer to her, Cady shifted her body so that Becca could be comfortable. Cady even went as far as to put her arm around the smaller girl to keep her safe.

All the others watched, as Becca slid so easily to Cady's side, and without even looking, Cady had made it cozy for Becca.

Becca smiled at her best friend's actions and turned to her two friends, one of which was Cady's brother. "C'mon Ava, tell me you wouldn't like to be in the same position I'm in. I'm sure Ralph could do something similar."

Ralph and Ava looked at each other, then back at the two girls snuggled contentedly. Ralph finally gave in and sat down, followed by Ava sitting closer to him. Copying his sister, Ralph draped his arm over Ava and adjusted himself to make her more comfortable. After a bit, Ava had fallen asleep, and Ralph couldn't help but smile.

Becca took the opportunity to take a picture to tease the two with later. She then turned to her Cady, who hadn't spoken the entire time. Becca knew that her best friend had her head in the clouds again, so to get her attention, she laced their fingers together and felt Cady stiffen but quickly relaxed.

"What are you doing, Becca?" Cady asked a little bit out of it.

"Enjoying your warmth," Becca answered as she snuggled closer to Cady.

Cady didn't say anything else and just let Becca be, loving the comfort of holding her close. Soon enough, the bus stopped at the Santa Monica Pier, and the group of friends got down. Cady and Becca got out and were followed by Ava and Ralph. Ava watched her friends and saw how Cady was protective over Becca, and she couldn't help but wonder if there was something more. They were even still holding hands.

"Ralph, is Cady gay?" Ava asked all of a sudden. "And if so, does she like Becca?"

Ralph was caught off guard and choked on his drink. Of course, he knew his sister's sexuality but how did Ava figure it out? And why did she think Cady had a crush on Becca? After he calmed down, he looked over at Ava in shock. "Where did this come from?"

"Look at how she acts with Becca," Ava exclaimed as she pointed to the two.

Becca had dragged the taller girl to the arcade. Cady had a smile on her face as Becca had fun playing all the games, but the smaller girl always lost, which made her turn to Cady and force the taller one to play, too. Cady easily won all the games and gave the prize to Becca each time.

"I'm confused," Ralph turned to Ava. "Cady is just easy to get along with."

Of course, he wouldn't just out his sister. She would kill him while he slept. Then again, Ralph didn't say anything since Ava figured it out herself.

"Hmm, I thought that too, but she only acts like this when Becca is around. Look," Ava said as she pointed to Cady. "Have you seen her this happy before?"

Ralph looked over at his sister again. He, of course, had seen her happy so many times before, but she would always seem to be brighter whenever she was around Becca. Whenever she was sad, she would always call Becca, and whenever she was mad, Becca could calm her down easily.

"I haven't," Ralph answered as he looked over to Ava. "I know that look, Ava, and I don't want to be part of it."

"Come on Ralphy, just distract Cady so I could talk with Becca. You don't even have to interrogate her." Ava pleaded.

"What's in it for me? Because I need to know that meddlingin my sister's love life is worth it." Ralph asked.

"You'll see your sister happy?" Ava tried, but one look from Ralph said that it didn't work. "I'll take you out on a date. Promise! Now go!"

Ava quickly kissed Ralph on the cheek before they walked over to the two.

"Hey, sis, could you help me pick out some stuff for Matt?" Ralph asked, knowing that his sister's weakness was their little brother.

Cady grumbled but followed his brother to the shops. Ava slipped beside Becca, who was hugging a lion plush that Cady had won for her.

"Hey, Bec!" Ava started. "So could I ask you something?"

"If it's about Ralph, then I'd say go for it. You two make each other happy. I don't understand why you just don't date." Becca answered as she walked out of the arcade.

"Wait, hold up!" Ava ran after her. "Just because we're happy doesn't mean he has feelings for me like that. Also, how are you sure that I have feelings for him?" Forgetting the real reason she wanted to talk to Becca.

"Cause I know you, Ava," Becca answered as if it was the most obvious thing. "As for Ralph, well, let's just say that Cady gets annoyed with him talking about you very often."

Ava couldn't help but blush hard at that. Did Ralph really like her? Before Ava could ask more questions about Ralph, she noticed a ring Becca was wearing. It looked exactly like Cady's ring!

"Are you really worried about him rejecting you?" Becca asked, pulling Ava out of her thoughts. "Because if you don't ask him now, someone else will see how great he is, and you'll lose him."

Before Ava could answer, Cady walked up to them with two ice creams. She handed one to Becca and the other to Ava.

"I lost Ralph at the shops, so I thought to buy ice cream," Cady explained.

"Ah! Tiramisu! My favorite! Thanks, Cay," Becca giggled as she placed a kiss on Cady's cheeks.

"Anything for my favorite girl," Cady responded, wrapping her arm around Becca.

"I better be the only one," Becca warned with a pointed look.

"There's no one better in this universe that could beat you for my heart, Bec." Cady swiftly stated as she kissed Becca's head.

Unbeknownst to the two girls, Ava had received a few texts from Ralph.

'Hey, heads up. I lost Cady, but knowing her, she'll be heading back to Becca.'

'Oh! Also, I got her to tell me about what she feels about Becca and...'

'You were right!'

'Cady likes, no scratch that. Cady loves Becca.'

Ava was right! She knew it! Love was her area, and she knew her friends alright.

"Can either of you explain what I'm witnessing right now?" Ava butted in, finally making her presence known to the two girls.

"What?" Becca asked innocently. "Never seen two best friends this close?"

Cady flinched slightly at Becca's words, which did not go unnoticed by Ava. Knowing Becca wouldn't budge, Ava turned to Cady.

"Oh, by all means, I have. You guys are just best friends. There's nothing wrong with being that close." Ava taunted, keeping a close eye on Cady's reaction. "Of course, nothing more will happen, right? I'm just making sure."

"Nothing more, nothing less," Becca repeated and added on.

With her words, Cady dropped her hold on Becca and left with the excuse of finding Ralph. Becca was stunned by what happened. She knew how Cady acted, and so she didn't expect the taller girl to react like that. Ava, on the other hand, was expecting Cady to fight back. The taller girl had always spoken her mind, but this time she just walked away.

"Seems like you've lost her," Ava whispered after a while. "And it might've been my fault, I shouldn't have pushed, my bad."

"Wha-at?" Becca stuttered, not believing what just happened. "What are you talking about?"

Ava couldn't believe it. Becca didn't know? How? Cady was never one to hide her emotions. Surely Becca knew or figured it out, right?

"Cady, you lost Cady." Ava repeated, waiting for it to sink in.

Becca lost her balance and leaned on the bench. Ava helped her to sit down while she waited for the other girl to speak.

"Cady liked me? Like, really liked me? in that way?" Becca asked Ava, even though it sounded like she was asking herself.

Before Ava could respond, however, her phone dinged, and a text appeared from Ralph.

'What did you do?'

'Cady's beating the hell out of the boxing machine!'

'Now she just punched me!'

'You told Becca?!'

'Cady planned to tell her tonight!'

Ava knew she messed up badly, but there was still a way to fix this. There had to be.

"Becca, there's still a way to fix this. You can tell Cady how you feel. I know she feels the same." Ava started. "I'll make sure the both of you get together. You two are too cute not to."

"It's not gonna be easy, Ava. I know Cady, and it took me a long time to even get her to open up to me." Becca explained before she realized what Cady wanted to do. "She was planning to confess to me today, wasn't she?"

Ava looked at her friend in shock. "How did you know that?"

"She gave me her ring." Becca showed ring on her left hand. "She said it was time for her to make a new promise. I asked her what it was, but she said I would find out later tonight."

"Come on." Ava stood up and pulled Becca up with her.

"What? Wait! Where are we going?" Becca yelled as they ran through the crowd.

"You are going to tell Cady you love her too." I told her.

"I can't just say that! She gave me her necklace, the one thing that she precious more than her own life. I need to do something similar. Plus, we don't even know where she is?!" Becca bit back.

'Cady is heading to the shoreline to take a breath. If you got Becca to do something, do it now!'

Ava smiled as she read the text. Ralph would always look out for his sister even when she's mad at him.

"Look, Cady is at the shoreline. Tell her how you feel, or you're gonna lose her too." Ava repeated the same words Becca told her.

Becca nodded before running off to Cady. Just as she left, Ralph appeared beside Ava.

"I hope they get together. I don't think I can stand a pissed-off Cady for longer than a few hours. She gets scary." Ralph spoke.

"I'm sorry for dragging you into this." Ava leaned on him as they watched Becca approach Cady.

"Hey, you were just trying to do some good. There's nothing wrong with that. On the bright side, I get to have a date out of all of this." Ralph joked as he wrapped his arm around Ava.

"Yeah, you do. Now let's go get your brother a gift." Ava suggested as she led him back to the arcade.

"Now, that is a good idea. Makes Matt happy and gets Cady off my back." Ralph laughed as he followed his girl happily.

Becca stood behind Cady as she figured out what to say, but before the words could form, Cady asked her something first.

"Did you mean it?" Cady spoke softly, almost like a whisper. "Because if you do, it's alright, but I'm gonna need my ring back."

Ava was shocked at those words as she held on tight to the ring. "No, you can't have it back."

Cady let out a heavy sigh as she turned to face Ava. She opened her palm out, waiting for Ava to give it back. "I'm not asking, Ava."

"You can't have it back, Cady, not when you haven't heard me out." Ava took a step closer. "I didn't mean it. I thought I could keep lying to myself about how I felt, but when you left me on the pier... don't ever do that to me again."

"I can't promise you that, Ava, not when I don't know ---" Cady was cut off when Ava pipped in. "How I feel? How about this?"

Ava pulled Cady close to her as she captured the older girl's lips with her own.  Cady wasn't expecting this, but as she did on the bus, she adjusted herself to make Becca more comfortable. Ava smiled into the kiss as she realized what Cady did and was happy she didn't push her away.

"You have no idea how long, I've been wanting to do that." Cady was grinning like an idiot once they parted for air.

Ava chuckled at Cady's words before she turned all serious again. "Don't leave me, okay?"

"Wouldn't think about it, Bec. I promise you." Cady sealed her promise with another kiss.
