One last message

(One last day continuation)

A week later, it was the day of Cassie's burial and Brit hadn't recovered. They had just gotten home and she couldn't stop crying. Faye hasn't left her side and was mostly there to keep an eye on the younger girl. The two were just talking when a knock interrupted them. Jason stood in the doorway and gestured for them to follow.

Cassie had tons of friends and a lot of them were there during the funeral, saying words about the life they had lost but none of them were there for the burial since Ivy and Jason wanted it to be just them and Brit's family. Hazel and Ivy were conversing on the couch while Peter was fixing the TV to show a video.

"What's going on?" Brit asked in between sobs. Faye led Brit to the couch and sat her between both moms while she and Jason stood by the side.

"Brit," Peter trod carefully. "Cassie made a video." He then pressed play.

"Hello?" Video Cassie called out. "Hi, is this working? I'm guessing it is."

All six of them smiled knowing that Cassie wasn't that great with her gadgets.

"If you're watching this then I'm gone, but hey don't worry I'm sure dad found me by now." Ivy and Jason smiled at that knowing that Cassie wasn't alone in the afterlife. "I just wanted to say a few words."

"To Uncle Peter and Aunt Hazel, I want to say thank you. You were like my second set of parents and you looked over Jase and me when Ma had to work and always treated us like we were your kids, for that I will always love you both." Peter hugged his wife, touched by the girl's words.

"To Faye, you were like the big sister I've always wanted. You made me feel like I could be anyone I wanted to be and that made me who I am and I have you to thank for that. I also want to thank you for making Jason happy and I trust you to be by his side even if you two don't end up together but seriously you two look like a good couple." Jason and Faye blushed deeply at the younger girl's words.

"To Jason, you are the best brother any kid could want or need. You were the right amount of annoying and protective but that's what I love about you. I'm sure you'll protect Ma, Brit, and Faye like you did me and that's the reason I had always looked up to you. Your older but I passed first, doesn't seem fair but I hope you live the life I never got to. I love you, big bro." Jason stumbled and Faye led him to the other couch before placing an arm over his shoulder, letting him lean on her.

"Ma, you are the greatest mother any child could ever have and I'm so happy that you were mine cause I wouldn't be me without you. When Dad died, you put Jason and me first but we knew you were hurting inside, and gratefully we got you out of your shell, I'm hoping you won't hide this time. I might've not gotten to live the life you wanted for me but I lived the life that I needed. I got to go to school, I met thousands of people, I got to help a lot of them. I learned the harsh reality but I had you and Jason to help me through it. Oh, and Ma, I fell in love."

There was a pause before the video continued.

"Sorry, Nurse Gab came in to get some blood. I wanted her to say hi but she didn't want to intrude Where was I?" Video Cassie looked to be thinking when suddenly she began to smile. "Ma, she's amazing. She's both brawny and brainy not to mention she's a beauty. Her name also happens to start with a B, just like Dad."

Brit couldn't help but blush at Cassie's words, even though Cassie hadn't said a name she knew like the girl was talking about her.

"She and I didn't start off on a good note when we met but she said that it was because she didn't know how to talk to me. Eventually, she did and we became best friends. We never became anything after that because she had a boyfriend back then and I didn't want to intrude. I loved her from afar but I was always by her side. Ma, do you remember, asking me why I always came home with an ice pack and supporting some bruise on my body? It was because of her."

Both Hazel and Ivy looked over to Brit curiously and Brit couldn't help but blush at the sudden looks and attention.

"She didn't hurt me on purpose or anything, she would tackle me in the hallway after class just so happy to see me. Somehow I'd up with a bruise afterward but I never told her cause she loved doing it and I couldn't take that away from her. Ma, I know you might think it's not ethical but I know it's love. I always used to ask dad how he knew you were the one and he told me it was because you made his heart sing and eventually made him actually sing. He said it didn't help that you were his best friend. Ma, that's how I feel about her. She makes me want to sing and scream."

That was followed by Cassie with a joking scream before she started laughing then coughing. A nurse, who they recognized as Nurse Gab, came into the frame and was by her side and they talked about how Cassie needed to stop joking around.

"Dam, sorry sorry." Cassie apologized and smiled sheepishly. "Ma, I brought her to where Dad and I used to go. I wanted to show her the world that Dad showed me and you won't believe me but she kissed me. She loved me too."

Hazel smiled, knowing that Cassie was always there for Brit and vice versa.

"I'm sure as hell you wouldn't have agreed with what we did after." A blush then rose on Cassie's cheeks. "Oh no, I didn't mean it in that way! Arghh!"

The family watching the video laughed at how embarrassed Cassie was even though it was just a recording.

"What I mean is, we sorta dated behind her boyfriend's back. She didn't want to come out yet and I didn't know how you would react especially since Dad's death was still so fresh. I told her I would wait for her, for as long as she needed, and I did. Guess I waited too long since I'm on my death bed. The only regret I have was that I didn't tell her I loved her as much as I could. Ma, I'm sure you can tell who I'm talking about and I hope you can accept her in our family even if not officially. She has my heart and she always will."

Ivy smiled at her daughter's words. "Thank you for loving my daughter." She pulled Brit closer to her and kissed the girl on her head.

"I just wish we had more time together," Brit told her and Ivy pulled her into a hug.

As they pulled apart, Cassie continued. "I might not get to see how we would've worked it out but I will watch over her always like I'll watch over you and Jason. I love you, Ma. Okay?"

Ivy laughed at her last word, Cassie really snuck in a book quote. "Okay." Ivy finished.

With that, the video ended.

"That's it?" Brit asked with tears in her eyes. Hazel hugged her daughter as she cried.

Jason then left the room but came back with a box in hand. He sat in front of Brit and passed it to her with a small smile. "The video we just watched was a week before your birthday but Cassie had me wrap this for you."

Brit's tears didn't stop running as she opened the gift. Inside was Cassie's camera. Along with it were a bunch of photos that Cassie had developed with dates on the back and a few words. Then there was an envelope with the words 'Read if you miss me' on the front.

"She also made this when we got back to the hospital after your birthday," Jason said as he played a different video.

"Hi, my light." Video Cassie said before slipping the nasal cannula back to take a breath. "I'm sorry you have to see me like this and for making this video so late. Gods, I hate to die on your birthday cause you'll be hating the day from then on that's why I'm waiting for 12."

Video Cassie gave a small chuckle before coughing and using the cannula again. "My light, I'm sure Jason or someone else told you why I didn't tell you about my condition but there's actually another reason why I didn't want you to know. Brit, you're my best friend, you're my person, you're my love. You know me as much as I know you and I know you would've wanted me to fight just like the others do but Brit--"

Video Cassie was thrown in a fit of coughs and it was evident that she was having a harder time breathing. "Brit, I'm tired. Faye told you what she knew but I've had cancer since I was small and I kept beating them time and time again but it kept recurring. I'm tired of fighting and I know if you knew, you would've made me stay and I would be in constant pain just seeing you cry. It's unfair that I didn't tell you or that we didn't have enough time together but I'm just so sick of not being the best me I could be."

Video Cassie took a deep breath with the cannula before continuing. "It was no life for me or for you and I didn't want to put you in a position where you were gonna wait for me even though there was nothing you were waiting for. I love you too much to do that to you. You can hate me all you want for not telling you but I stand what I said and even if you hate me, I'll always love you and watch over you."

The family watched as Video Cassie took her final breath before she uttered her last words, the same words that Brit told her. "I love you, my light."

Cassie closed her eyes and fell back into the bed before the video just showed the ceiling. Nothing was heard but the beeps of the machine the girl was attached to until they heard the flatline. Cassie had passed.

Ivy held on to Brit as she sobbed hard, broken down than she had ever been. Jason might've lost his sister, Ivy might've lost her daughter, but Brit lost her other half, there would be nothing in the world that could fix that.

"She loved you, my dear. Until her final breath, she loved you." Ivy whispered to the girl.
