I promise to always have Oreos
Betty headed back to the classroom, wanting to see the progress the other girl had done. She wasn't as surprised when she heard Kyle and his music, though, at least Cory wasn't alone. When she heard the music stop, she decided to just eavesdrop for a bit.
"Hey, you okay?" Kyle suddenly asked as he stopped the music.
"I'm fine..." Cory told him as she continued sweeping the floor.
"You're always fine," Kyle said as he stopped her and made her face him. "Is this about Miss President?"
'They're talking about me?' Betty couldn't help but think to herself. 'But why?'
"You know she's not worth that much trouble you get into." Kyle continued as they sat down. "There are always others out there, but you just had to go for the most difficult one."
'Hey!' Betty thought as Cory spoke up. "Hey! That's not nice."
"I'm just saying. There are other girls out there who would love to go out with you. Why stick to someone who can't even get a hint or give you the time of day?" Kyle asked her.
Betty leaned in closer, curious as to what Cory would say. She was already shocked that the other girl had liked her. What else was she keeping?
"I don't know. It's been months, and she just keeps ignoring me or gets annoyed by me. Maybe you're right." Cory let out a heavy breath as she realized what she was feeling. "C'mon help me out so we can get some snacks."
"Way ahead of you," Kyle said as he pulled out some Oreos from his bag. "Got you, your favorite, by the way. Double stuffed just like you like them."
"Ugh! You are the best unofficial brother ever! How'd you get them in? Also, where'd you get them?" Cory asked him curiously.
Betty took a peek to see what they were talking about when she saw a pack of Oreos in Kyle's hands. Betty couldn't help but smile at how adorable Cory looked as her eyes brightened at the sight of the Oreos.
"Bottom of the bag also, Ma knows you like them and bought extras." Kyle explained, "Now, for every part that you clean, I'll reward you with a cookie."
"Deal!" With that, Kyle turned back on the music as Cory got to cleaning.
Betty got out of there as quickly and quietly as she could. She headed straight home, wanting to process all the things she heard. Cory liked her. The nonchalant, friendly, and always happy Cory liked her. Betty had always thought that Cory was dating Kyle because of how much time they spent together; she never really noticed that he was like a brother to her.
What didn't make the most sense was the fact Cory liked her. She actually liked her! They were polar opposites. Cory was always free-spirited while Betty always stuck to the rules. Cory held her head up high while Betty kept it low profile. There was no way they could work. Could they?
All of this was running through Betty's thoughts throughout the weekend. She wasn't even able to focus much on her school work because Cory kept popping into her mind. What was this girl doing to her?
'I need to talk to her. I need to know what I'm feeling.' Betty's final thought before she drifted to sleep.
Monday finally strung along, and Betty was a little nervous to see Cory, but like she always was, Cory was late to the first period. Cory took her seat beside Betty, but this time was different. Cory had always made it her goal to distract Betty, but today, nothing. Cory sat down, pulled out a notebook and a pen, and began listening to the lesson.
'Odd' Betty thought, but she didn't think too much into it as she focused on the lesson.
By the time the third period ended, Cory didn't take even a short glance at Betty, as if she was deliberately ignoring her. Betty couldn't stand it. She realized over the weekend that she liked the attention Cory had given her. It was genuine, unlike all their other classmates who were just asking for help with the school work.
Lunchtime rolled along, and Betty fished a pack of Oreos from her bag wanting to give it to Cory, but when she turned back around, Cory was gone. Betty was able to see her slip out of the classroom with Kyle, though. A little disappointed Betty slumped back into her chair.
"Hey, what's with the Oreos?" Taylor, Betty's best friend, and Class secretary asked as she sat down in Cory's seat. "Did you know Cory goes crazy over that? If I were you, I'd hide it from her."
Betty couldn't but laugh at her best friend's words. "The Oreo's for her, actually. I admit that making her stay clean on Friday was a bit harsh, and I wanted to make it up to her."
"That's pretty cool of you, Miss Prez," Taylor admitted. "Hold up, how'd you know to get her Oreos? I only knew she liked them because she asked me for some a while back. So how did you?"
"I kinda heard them talking?" Betty confessed, which made Taylor gasp out loud, and Betty had to shush her. "It's not a big deal, okay? I just want to apologize."
"That's a shame," Taylor said quietly. "I thought you'd finally see that Cory liked you."
"You know?" Betty asked her a bit confused as to how she knew.
"Yeah, obviously. The whole class knows, hell even our teachers know. The only one that didn't know was you. Cory's not one to be subtle, and it was blatantly obvious when she was flirting with you. How you didn't see it shocked everyone." Taylor explained.
Betty pondered that as the two ate in silence. Soon enough, lunchtime was almost over. Taylor had returned to her seat where Kyle was waiting beside her. Betty looked over the class to find Cory since Kyle was already in his seat. She found her by the doorway, talking to another girl, who looked younger than her, from a different section.
Betty watched as they talked, and when the girl put her hand on Cory's arm, she became livid. The whole class watched as their president stormed over to the doorway and banged the door to get the other girl's attention.
"Class is about to start; you should better go back to your respective classroom, MISS." The last word she said was full of venom.
The girl ran away quickly, and Betty turned to face Cory, but Cory had already gone back to her seat. They all watched closely, wanting to see what Betty's next step was. Kyle even passed some popcorn to Taylor to munch on. Betty, however, was stopped when the next teacher came in, and their 5th period had begun.
Betty couldn't focus as she stole small glances at Cory, who had been talking to Pierce, the guy sitting beside her. Betty couldn't help but glare at him for having Cory's attention, and when Pierce saw the look on Betty's face, he quickly backed down and apologized to Cory before focusing back on the lesson.
Cory was a little confused as to why he did so but shrugged it off nonetheless. Cory then turned back to her book before glancing over to Betty, who had been looking over at her. When Kyle told her that Betty had been looking at her all morning, Cory didn't want to believe him, but here she was stealing glances at her.
Cory couldn't help but smile to herself. She was not going to make it easy for Betty. Not one bit.
Throughout the last few periods, Cory would deliberately ignore Betty's attempts at getting her attention, which made Betty more annoyed. Cory would talk to everyone in the class except for Betty, which made the girl even more jealous. Betty wanted Cory's attention, and Cory wouldn't give it to her.
Betty didn't want to come to this, but she had no other choice. She pulled the detention note from her bag and wrote one up for Cory. Cory just took it from her and shrugged her off. Now she knows she was going too far by ignoring Betty, but she just wanted to see how far the other girl would go.
The last period ended, and Cory stayed for her detention. As the last student exited the classroom, Betty closed and locked all the doors before she stood up to Cory. She didn't need the others to see her get rejected.
"Cory, why have you been ignoring me all day?" Betty finally asked the other girl.
"Why did you give me detention? I didn't do anything wrong." Cory ignored her question and just got straight to the point.
"I needed to talk to you, but you wouldn't let me," Betty told her as she pulled on her shirt.
"That doesn't give you the right to hmpp--" Cory was cut off when Betty had stuffed an Oreo in her mouth.
"Just let me talk," Betty said as she handed the Oreo to Cory.
Cory didn't say anything as she took a seat and ate the Oreos while Betty explained.
"Look, I kinda heard you and Kyle talking last Friday, and I heard some things that I disagreed on and some that I kinda liked too. I didn't like the fact that Kyle was kinda trash-talking me but I get his point and I kinda liked that you liked me but hated that you thought I didn't like you because I kinda do like you." Betty just spat everything out not wanting to keep it inside any longer. "And that's when I figured that you liked Oreos because Kyle said they were your favorites and I wanted to give you some to apologize and I just want to say sorry for ignoring you all those times before. I didn't actually think you'd have a thing for me."
Cory choked on her Oreo as Betty said the last line, but thankfully, she swallowed it, though. She looked up to Betty, who had a worried and nervous look on her face. Cory, however, couldn't help but chuckle at how cute Betty looked. She gave Betty a warm smile as she stood up and held her hand out for her.
Betty took Cory's hand as the other girl pulled her up and close to her.
"You have been scaring all of our classmates today because I was talking to them and not you. You scared off Kyle's little sister at lunch because she put her hand on my arm. You gave me detention just so that you could talk to me. And you manage to sneak Oreos to school just to apologize." Cory summarized the whole day. "That just makes me want to kiss you more."
Cory didn't ask or wait any longer and pulled Betty in for a kiss. Betty was shocked at the sudden action but melted into it as Cory's hold on her tightened. Betty could taste the chocolate off of Cory's lips, and it tasted heavenly. The kiss was long-awaited, but it was worth it.
They only separated when they heard laughing from the doors. Cory opened it up and found Kyle and Taylor there with bags of popcorn each as Taylor handed Kyle a 50 dollar bill.
Cory shook her head, kind of already figured her best friend would bet on her. Betty looked at Taylor, shocked and offended that she had bet and lost too. Cory just laughed at the whole ordeal. she snaked her arm around Betty and pulled her close to her.
Betty looked up to Cory and kissed her on the cheek. "I love you, Cory."
"I love you, too, Betts," Cory said as she kissed the top of Betty's head. "But if we're gonna be dating, you have to know there's one thing I'm gonna love more than you."
"And what's that gonna be?"
"Oreos."
Betty laughed at Cory even though she knew the girl was being serious. She kissed Cory once more on the lips as she promised her.
"I promise to always have Oreos for you then."
"I knew I loved you for a reason."
