I miss you
Where am I?
I looked around to see that I'm on some sort of rooftop. In the distance, I saw the famous Times Square.
Looked around more and saw blankets and pillows by the corner. Right beside it was a stack of books and a bottle of wine.
The more I looked, the more it felt familiar.
When it finally clicked,
I wasn't on any ordinary rooftop.
This was where it began.
This was where I fell in love.
This was where it happened.
This was where everything changed.
This was where I lost myself.
This was where I lost her.
This was where it ended.
What am I doing here?
I walked over to the corner where the stack of books was. I grabbed the top book before flipping the pages until a photo fell out. I picked it up, and my heart clenched at what I saw.
It was the first time I had stepped on this rooftop.
The day I met her,
My friends were going on and on about this party and I didn't want to go but they still managed to get me here, that's when I saw her. She was reading a book titled "Shatter Me." How she was able to read with so much noise still surprises me.
I sat by her side and slid a glass of wine to her, which she gladly accepted after putting down her book. We spent the rest of the night talking, mostly about books we'd read and which authors we liked best. Those few hours together felt like an eternity, knowing her.
My friends had taken a picture of us since they thought it would be funny, but I cherished it so much.
I went up and leaned over the edge and yelled out, knowing full well no one would hear me from up here.
"Gods, I just miss you, Tess!!!" I yelled to no one in particular.
"You miss me?" A voice said from the door.
I turned around and saw her standing there. She looked as beautiful as the last time I saw her but she looked more tired.
"..." I couldn't speak. I was still frozen from the fact that she was here.
"I missed you too, you know," Tess told me, coming closer. "Are you okay?"
Without warning, she reached out to me and pulled me into a tight hug.
"You look like a mess..." She told me.
I didn't respond to what she said; I just held her closer.
"You're supposed to be in Boston," I told her.
She's supposed to be in Boston, living the dream, our dream for the both of us. We let go of each other and I sat down with my back leaning on the balcony.
"I couldn't stay there," Tess said as she looked out to the city. "I couldn't leave this city."
"But you left everything, you left everyone, you left me."
Tess sat beside me before leaning her head and resting it on my shoulder.
"I didn't want to," Tess whispered.
I looked at her. She was as beautiful as the day I met her, but she looked tired. I waited for her to explain.
"Boston was amazing. The sights, the people, the job, just like we've ever dreamed about. It had everything. " Tess started. "But it was missing everything, too."
I looked at her, confused out of mind. It seems like there's a trend going on here. Tess figured I got confused and continued.
"Living in Boston, living our dream wasn't the same without you. You're my everything, Jamie." She sat up and looked at me properly.
I could see the tears threatening to fall from her beautiful baby blue eyes, and it broke my heart to see her like this.
I wiped the few tears that escaped and without another word I lifted her onto my lap and pulled her close to me, sealing our lips in a kiss. Her lips, the ones I missed against mine, tasted the same. She always did love Cherry Cola.
When we finally broke apart because of lack of air, she was smiling the most stupidest smile I had ever seen. I could tell I was smiling big too because my cheeks were hurting now.
Our foreheads connected as we rested on each other. We stayed like that for a while, just being in each other's company.
"I miss you," Tess told me, looking back up.
This may be the place where we ended, but it will be where we will begin again, as long as we have each other, we'll be okay.
I smiled at her, "I miss you too."
