The Christmas party

prompt: basically Sarah's mom invites her ex boyfriend to a Christmas party, so she and Jacob decide to 'pretend date' to make him jealous

Sarah's p.o.v:

"YOU DID WHAT?!" I shouted into the phone.

"Sarah, it's fine, I thought you said you were over him," my mom replied.

"I am over him, but why did you have to invite him out of all people?!" I said.

"Sarah, it doesn't matter, he's coming and there's nothing you can do about it." my mom says sharply. I hang up on her, which is probably going to come back to haunt me later. How could my mom invite my ex boyfriend out of all people to her Christmas party?! I might have been lying a little when I said I was over Alex, like how could anyone ever get over Alex? I walk over to the bathroom and grab my toothbrush. I apply some toothpaste and start brushing and that's when it hits me. I spit out the toothpaste, grab my phone and after about a minute a voice answers.

"Hello?" Jacob asked, yawning.

"Hey, remember when I helped you move a couch and you said you would help me do something in return?" I say into the phone.

"Yeah," Jacob says sounding very confused.

"Well, Ineedyoutogotomymom'schristmaspartyandpretendtobemyboyfriend." I say into the phone.

"What are you trying to say? Talk slower," Jacob says.

"Okay, um, I need you to go to my mom's Christmas party and pretend to be my boyfriend," I finished.

"WHAT?!" he screams.

"I need you to go to my mom's chri-" I start saying but get interrupted.

"Yeah, I know that I'm your best friend and I'd do anything for you but why do you need a date to a Christmas party where only your family and close friends go to?" Jacob asked, confused.

"She invited Alex..." I say and hear Jacob gasp from the other line.

"I'll do it and meet me at the mall tomorrow," Jacob says.

"Thank you so much, I love you, bye," I say into the phone.

"I love you too," Jacob says and then hangs up. I smile to myself as I sit on my bed, but then I realize this: this is gonna be a hell of a party if me and Jacob are going to pretend to date. What will my friends think? Would they freak out? Would they see straight through my lies? I'm not a good liar, that's Laura's job. I fell asleep swimming in my thoughts.

"OKAY, I'M UP!!!" I scream as I get up from my dreamless sleep and practically break my alarm while trying to turn it of. I hear the doorbell go off and I try to come up of ways to cleverly kill whoever is trying to make me get of my bed. I open the door and see Jacob dressed in sunglasses, a white shirt, black skinny jeans, and checkered vans.

"Why are you here so early?" I say while glaring daggers at him.

"I thought we were going to the mall...?" he said, looking very confused.

"Not this early," I reply.

"Sarah, it's literally 11 A.M." Jacob says.

"I know, but at least wait until the sign A.M changes to P.M. I am not a morning person!! You of all people should know that!!!" I scream. Jacob rolls his eyes, pushed past me, and walks straight into my house.

"Do you want me to help you or not?" He questions, raising an eyebrow.

"Okay, but at least let me change out of my pajamas," I tell him as I walk towards my closet, pull out some of my clothes, and walk towards the bathroom.

"So, you're going to change in there?" He asks.

"Yep," I say.

A few minutes later, I finally come out of the bathroom in new clothes, clean teeth, and presentable hair... only to find Jacob eating my breakfast.

"Hey, hands off of my food!" I say, walking up to him and snatching my apple back.

"So, we have to pretend to date so you don't look like a loser in front of your ex-boyfriend," Jacob says with his mouth full of apple. I look at him with pure disgust.

"Don't speak with your mouth full, and you could have said no but you didn't," I say looking at him.

"True, but I would have been a pretty bad best friend if I had told you to go face your ex-boyfriend by yourself," He says then opens up his arms. "Come here," He says and I fall into his arms. He embraced me tightly.

He pulls away and then says,"Okay, since we are dating now we have to be comfortable around each other, which means touching and public displays of affection," Jacob says.

"So hand-holding and kissing," He says slowly.

"Is kissing really important?" I ask.

"Yes, even the most modest of couples have slip ups where they kiss," Jacob says with a duh expression on his face.

"Well, I mean if we do hand holding and other stuff maybe we don't hav-" but I was soon cut off by a pair of lips on mine and I reluctantly kissed back.

Jacob pulled back. "See, that wasn't so bad," he said. He was right, it wasn't bad. It was good, really good, maybe even better than any kiss I've had with Alex.

------------------------------------------------------Time Skip-------------------------------------------------------------

Today was the day of the party. I was sitting in the shotgun of Jacob's truck freaking out.

"We're gonna be okay, I promise," Jacob says from the driver seat.

"This was a bad idea," I say.

"Well, it's happening whether you like it or not," Jacob says and he turns on the radio. Billie Eilish blasts out from the speaker and we fall into a comfortable silence.

"All right, we're here," Jacob says as we pull into my parent's driveway. Cars are parked across the road and I recognize a blue Tesla. Alex's car. Screw him for being so rich and breaking my heart.

"Hey, you can do this," Jacob says and squeezes my hand for comfort.

"All right, let's do this," I say. He takes my hand, intertwines them with his, and we walk hand in hand to the door. I ring the doorbell. My mom opens the door with a big grin on her face and it only gets wider when she notices our intertwined hands.

"I missed you so much," she says, crushing us with a giant hug.

"I missed you too, Mom," I say as I hug her back. She pulls away and gives me a look.

"I was talking to Jacob, not you, you ungrateful child," She says and of course Jacob laughs like she said the funniest thing ever.

"It's like I never left," I say to Jacob. He kisses my head and intertwined our hands again. As soon as we take a step through the door I immediately get crushed with a hug from Sunny.

"They're holding hands!!" Sam screamed from the couch which she's standing on. If I did that Mom would have yelled at me.

"I knew it!" Laura says.

"I was always rooting for you two kids to get together," Annabel said, taking a sip of her eggnog.

Sunny finally pulled away after a few moments. I walk into the living room, only to get pulled back by my arm and crushed into Jacobs chest. "Mistletoe," he says, pointing above our head at the tiny mistletoe and then pulls me in for a deep kiss. Which obviously gets a lot of aww's from the crowd but a loud cough causes us to break apart. I turn to see Alex's face.

"Hey," he says.

"Hi," I respond.

"Well, this is awkward," Laura says.

"Yeah, it really is," Alex says, sipping on whatever the heck he was drinking.

"Okay, I guess now that you and Jacob are dating we can tell you this," Sam says walking closer to Alex and holding his hand. Oh wait, they're dating? I'm surprisingly okay with this, and the surge of jealousy that I got when we were dating was gone. Wait, was I over Alex?

"Wait, so you guys are like, dating?" Jacob asks, sounding very confused.

"Yeah," Alex says, gripping her hand tightly and like I said I felt nothing. I actually shipped them. What is happening to me? The night actually went by really fast with relatives talking to you, lots of food, and Lana Del Rey blasting through Laura's phone. Me and Jacob stayed back to help my mom clean everything. She then packed us leftovers.

"Have a safe ride home guys, and please get married soon so I can have grandchildren."

"MOM!" I scream my face turning bright red at what she just said. I turn to look at Jacob and he's blushing like crazy. Both of us walk back to his truck and sit down.

"So um today wasn't as bad as I thought it would be," Jacob says.

"Yeah," I agreed.

"You know this got me thinking about us." He says. Oh.

"Okay, then ask me out," I say because if there's one thing I know about Jacob, it's that he sucks at asking out girls.

"Okay, will you go to dinner with me," He asks with a shy smile.

"Yes," I say.
