Chapter 7
"Agent Romanoff, do you copy?" Steve asked through his earpiece but received a quiet moment as an answer. "Agent Romanoff." He said again, more clear this time. "Natasha!" When he didn't get an answer the fifth time, he started looking for her in the big industry building. They were assigned yet again on another mission together and they usually worked out perfectly. The fact that she didn't answer now made his stomach turn and he ran through the small, claustrophobic hallways with hopes of finding her somewhere.
After a few minutes of running, Steve reached a big room with machines by the walls that left the middle of the room empty. Well, it would be empty if it wasn't for Natasha who was fighting five guys in black uniforms. As fast as he noticed her, he breathed out relived and threw his shield towards one of the men. It hit him and he fell backwards. "About damn time." Natasha shouted to Steve as she kicked one of the men in the face and picked up his shield. "Why didn't you answer my calls?" Steve said back to her as he began fighting another man. It didn't take long until all of the men laid on the floor, passed out. Both Steve and Natasha breathed heavily as Natasha threw Steve something. He caught it with one hand and opened his fist to look at his palm. It was her broken earpiece. "That idiot there broke it." She said, looking at one of the men. "I promise to call you another time Steve." Natasha said with a smirk as she looked at him.
"Are we done here?" Steve asked and she nodded before they left the industry. "Do you have the information?" He asked and she nodded again. "Let's go before more of them comes." She said as they began looking for a way out of the building.
They had taken the car to the industry since it was not far from New York. The clock was getting closer to midnight but the streets were still crowded. It's called the city that never sleeps for a reason. "About the avengers initiative.." Natasha began talking suddenly and Steve looked at her.
"Let's just forget about that." Steve said before turning his eyes onto the road again. "I know what you thought. I didn't investigate you, Rogers. I just wanted to make sure that you would be able to handle it." She said.
"Why wouldn't I be able to handle it?" He asked and she sighed. "Honestly? I thought it might be a little too much for you. I mean, you've been through a lot." She said, referring to the years of sleep in deep, cold ice.
"And you haven't?" Steve asked a bit annoyed. She looked at him with wide eyes.
"I'm not calling you weak, Steve. All I'm saying is.." She began but stopped for a while. His eyes met hers and she sighed a bit. A few quiet seconds filled the car before she began talking again. "Look, I care about you. I just wanted to make sure you were okay." She said with a frown. "I'm okay." He said and she nodded.
"Good, cause' we really need you." She said, looking out through the window. "See you tomorrow?" Steve asked as Natasha stepped out of the car. "Actually, I'm going out of town for a few days." She said and Steve raised his eyebrows surprised.
"What? Where?" He asked. Natasha never skipped a few days of work. She smiled slightly at him.
"I'm going to visit a friend. I just need some time away from work sometimes you know." She said and he nodded.
"Well, I'll see you in a few days then?" He asked and she nodded.
"Sweet dreams Rogers." She said before walking into her apartment. Steve didn't know why, but the thought of Natasha meeting up with a friend for a few days bothered him. What friend? Clint? He tried to push away the idea but he couldn't stop it from entering his mind. It even disturbed him at work. "Captain Rogers." A smooth voice woke him up from his thoughts.
"Hey, Sharon. How are you?" He asked with a smile. Sharon smiled back at him.
"I'm really good, how about you?" She asked.
"I'm good." He said with a small smile. "Lots of work, that's all." "Yeah, a day of would be nice right?" She said with a smile and Steve's thoughts went immediately to Natasha. "But maybe you're free this evening? How about that coffee?" She asked and he nodded. "Yeah sure, that would be great. I've actually wanted to talk to you about somethings." He said with a smile.
"Great, I guess I'll see you later then?" Sharon asked and he nodded.
"Yeah." He said with a smile before she walked away. "Clint." Natasha said with a smirk as she hugged him. "Did you really have to move out to the middle of nowhere?" She asked, tired from the travel. "Don't complain, it doesn't take that long." He said with a smile. "I didn't complain. I asked a simple question." She said as Lila came running towards Natasha on chubby child legs.
"Auntie Nat!" She shouted before Natasha embraced her in a hug.
"How's my favourite girl?" Natasha asked with a big smile. "I'm good. I drew you something!" Lila said happily.
"Really? I'd love to see it!" Natasha said exited and Lila ran into the house. "Laura is leaving of Cooper at a friend." Clint said and Natasha nodded. "But he said Hi." Clint added and Natasha laughed slightly.
"Yeah right." "Well, he could have." Clint said as they went into the house. Natasha smirked.
Steve sat down by a table with Sharon across from him. They had already started to talk about work and babbled on for a while about it. "You can ask me about it you know." Sharon said after a while. "What?" "About Peggy. I know you must have a lot of questions." She said and Steve nodded slightly as he looked down at his cup of coffee. "It feels wrong in a way. Especially when she isn't the one to tell me." Steve said and Sharon nodded.
"I was born and raised in New York. My dad, Peggy's brother, died before I was born but Peggy helped taking care of me a lot whenever my mother couldn't." She began and Steve nodded slightly. He frowned a bit and she put her hand on his arm.
"I get it. I'm sorry. It's a lot to take in." She said and Steve nodded. His phone suddenly started buzzing and he picked it up.
"It's Fury, sorry." He said as he answered. "Nick." He said.
"Captain Rogers, you need to come in immediately. It's an order." Fury said and Steve nodded.
"I'll be there." He said before hanging up.
"I'm sorry Sharon, I have to work." He said and she nodded.
"It's fine, call me if you ever need to talk or something." She said with a smile.
"I will, thanks." He said as he hurried to SHIELD headquarters.
