Chapter 40

After a while, Steve left. Natasha almost had to beg him to leave, several times. He was as worried as usual but when she finally got him out of the door, she regretted it. She sighed as she looked at their apartment. What was she supposed to do all night? She was already bored to death and she couldn't even work which was what she usually did when she lived alone. She simply sat down on the couch, checking if there was anything good on TV but found nothing special. She leaned her head back in the couch and looked at the clock behind her on the wall. Steve left 13 minutes ago. She decided to put on a movie and just choose a random one. Anything to make time pass by faster. She let her hands caress her own stomach a bit as she watched the movie and gasped as a hard kick hit her belly. She could even feel it on her hand. "Hey.." She said, looking down at her stomach with a frown on her face. The baby continued to kick hard and Natasha felt pain go through her stomach. She didn't know why but she started to think about different lullabies. Maybe the baby would hear her voice and slowly relax a bit. The first one that came to mind was the lullaby "Tili Tili Bom", but Natasha got goosebumps at the bare thought. A lullaby that scared children into sleep may work, which she knew by own experience, but it certainly didn't calm them. She'd never let her child hear those words. Instead, she picked a more peaceful one. "I'm lying on the moon. My dear, I'll be there soon. It's a quiet and starry place. Times we're, swallowed up in space we're here a million miles away." She began singing softly and slowly. She turned down the sound on the TV so her focus laid on her stomach. The baby stopped kicking and Natasha smiled brightly as she continued to sing.
"There's things I wish I knew. There's no thing I'd keep from you. It's a dark and shiny place. But with you my dear, I'm safe and we're a million miles away." Natasha continued singing. As the baby hadn't kicked for the entire song, she simply stopped singing, proud to know that it had worked. It barley took five minutes before the baby kicked again, so Natasha spent the rest of her night singing to her stomach. After a while, she simply forgot why she was even singing and enjoyed being almost all alone for a little while. She was too lazy to cook some dinner, and if she was honest, cooking had never been one of her talents so she ordered a pizza, ate half of it before getting ready for bed. It wasn't even that late but she was tired of not having anything to do. She had tried to read but it just ended up with her singing every other second because of the baby's kicks. It was as if the baby wanted to tease her a little extra now that Steve was away. Natasha couldn't wait for him to get home. She brushed her teeth and crawled down beneath the cold sheets. It felt so empty without Steve right next to her but after a while, she slowly fell asleep, holding Steve's pillow tightly pressed to her chest.

Natasha woke up as a the baby kicked hard against her stomach. She moaned quietly at the pain combined with her tired eyes. Then she suddenly heard a melody that made her body ache. She quietly crawled out of bed, putting on one of her robes before she opened her bedroom door. "Steve?" She shouted but got no answer. She reached the living room and her eyes pierced at Steve's old radio he brought with him when they moved in together. It was on and the song she feared so much played on a high volume. "Тили-тили-бом. Закрой глаза скорее, Кто-то ходит за окном, И стучится в двери. (Tili Tili Bom. Swiftly close your eyes. Someone is walking outside the house. And knocks upon the door)." Natasha quickly walked to the radio, trying to turn it off. It didn't work no matter what button she tried to press down and the song kept playing. "Тили-тили-бом. Кричит ночная птица. Он уже пробрался в дом. К тем, кому не спится. (Tili Tili Bom. The night birds are singing. He is already inside the house. Of those who can't sleep)." Natasha's heart was beating at an unhealthy speed and she threw the radio hard to the floor as pieces of it flew across the living room floor. The music stopped and Natasha breathed out relived just as the song began playing again. She looked down at the radio, only to realise that it was indeed as broken as it could be. "Он идет... Он уже... близко... (He walks.. He is coming.. Closer...)" Natasha felt fear fill up her entire body as the song she had heard so many times during her youth keep playing. Where was the music coming from? "Тили-тилибом. Ты слышишь, кто-то рядом? Притаился за углом, И пронзает взглядом. (Tili Tili Bom. Do you hear someone nearby? Lurking so runs the corner. Piercing with his gaze)."
Natasha desperately tried to find where the music came from as her heart was beating loudly and sweat formed on her forehead. As the baby kicked in her stomach she suddenly realised that the music came from her own mind. From inside of her head.
"Тили-тили-бом. Все скроет ночь немая. За тобой крадется он, И вот-вот поймает. (Tili Tili Bom. The silent night hides everything. He sneaks up behind you, and he is going to get you)." The music suddenly disappeared and three loud knocks were placed on her front door. Natasha slowly walked towards the door. She knew that it wasn't Steve, he wouldn't have knocked. He has keys. Natasha opened the door, getting ready to punch someone to the ground as a shocked expression hit her face. "Nick? What are you doing here?" Natasha asked surprised as Fury stood outside of her door. Nick frowned a bit, dragging his hand over his face before looking at her again. "I'm sorry to wake you up at this hour Agent Romanoff, but you have to follow me to the hospital. Captain Rogers got badly hurt at the mission and his condition is critical." Fury began and Natasha's eyes widened. "Is he alive?" She asked, feeling a knife through her heart. Nick took a deep breath, frowning deeply. "This will be your last chance to see him." He said and Natasha suddenly lost her sight as darkness took over her eyes. As Natasha woke up, sweat surrounded her numb body. Her heart was beating so fast she was certain that she'd die at any moment. She finally managed to sit up only to realise that she was laying in her bed. She quickly got to her feet, running out to the living room only to see Steve's radio, whole and nicely put on the table as usual. It was a dream. It was a nightmare. Steve was fine. She sat down on the floor, feeling the overwhelming sadness and relief wash over her as the tears started streaming down her cheeks.
