Chapter 36
Steve walked into the apartment, happy to get home to the love of his life. The meeting with Fury had been as he predicted, nothing important. Only business, business, business. As he walked through the door, his eyes met Natasha who stood behind the kitchen counter, right where he had left her earlier that morning. He smiled brightly. "I brought some junk food. I know it's bad for our bodies and whatever but it tastes fantastic." He said, putting it down on the counter, giving Natasha a long kiss. When she didn't kiss him back or even answering his comment about the delicious food, he looked at her worryingly. "Natasha? Are you okay?" He asked and she immediately bit her lip. "I'm.. I.. " She began and Steve felt his heart race. "Natasha, what is it?" He asked seriously. Natasha let her eyes meet Steve's ocean blue ones. She took a deep, deep breath but it felt like no oxygen entered her lungs.
"I'm pregnant." She said, feeling something heavy lift from her chest. It finally felt like she could breath again. "I'm pregnant." She repeated, holding a hand over her belly.
She inhaled once again and looked deeply into Steve's eyes. "We're pregnant." She said.
Steve stared at Natasha, his mouth wide open. "What?" He asked but he heard her very clear. She couldn't be kidding with him. She'd never hurt him like that. "I'm pregnant." Natasha said again. She kept repeating those words like she didn't believe them or to make sure that she would. "But Natasha.. Aren't you.." Steve began but she interrupted. "Sterile. Yes I am. But I peed on five sticks. Five sticks." She said, almost hyperventilating. "When all of them showed positive, I went to Dr. Davis and he told me I was pregnant." Natasha kept talking and Steve listened. His mouth still wide open. "But Dr. Davis.." Steve began but was interrupted again. "Can't be trusted, I know. That's why I brought this.." She said, with a calmer voice this time as she handed him the picture of their baby. Steve took the picture, holding it gently. His eyes grew wide as he looked down at it, letting his fingertips run over the picture. He looked up at Natasha who took deep breaths. He realised now that she had been crying. His heart had been filled with a joy he didn't think was possible, but seeing her doubt it, his heart went sad. "Natasha?" He asked softly and she looked at him. "Is this really real? Please tell me it isn't another dream because I can't take it anymore." She said and Steve smiled brightly. "We're having a baby?" He asked and Natasha nodded. "Yeah, I think so." She said, still confused over the whole situation. Steve almost laughed in joy, putting his hands on his head. "We're having a baby!" He said, smiling. Natasha looked at him and a smile appeared on her face as well. She was so relieved. Relived to know that he felt the same way as she did. "We're having a baby." He added again, tears forming in his eyes. "You're pregnant?" He asked again, walking closer to her and putting her hands on his stomach. Natasha nodded, wiping away her own tears while she still smiled. "You're pregnant." Steve said. "We're having a baby." He said again, kissing her hard. Natasha broke away from the kisses and Steve's exited grip.
"The baby moves. A lot." She said, grabbing his hand and putting it on her belly. They stood quiet for a while but it didn't take long until Natasha felt the same movement and Steve gasped. "Oh my god." He said, tears running down his cheeks. "I'm sorry. I have to sit down." Steve said, taking a seat in the living room couch. He put his head in his hands and a few sobs could be heard from him. He dragged his hands over his red face, looking up at Natasha. "We're going to be parents." Steve said, his voice breaking half through as he kept sobbing. Natasha sat down beside him, trying to comfort him but it was a bit hard when she herself wouldn't stop crying. "That's our child." Steve said, a half hour later. He was still speechless as he looked at the ultrasound picture. "You and I.. A baby.." He said, looking at Natasha. "What about everything else? Was the baby healthy? And how is it possible? With the sterilisation and all?" Steve suddenly bursted out questions and Natasha bit her teeth together a bit. "I didn't stay for that part." She said, touching her stomach. "I needed to tell you." She said, smiling. "Steve, this is crazy." She then said and he nodded. "I'm really happy though." Steve said, kissing Natasha's lips. "Me too." She mumbled on his lips. Because that was the truth. It might be terrifying and scary but both of them knew how much they wanted a child, especially with each other. "We're having a baby." Steve repeated again. It didn't stop sounding magical, no matter how many times he said it. Natasha suddenly frowned. "I don't want to tell anyone." She said and Steve laughed. "You what?" He asked. "I believe it's going to get pretty hard hiding it in a few weeks." He chuckled. Natasha moaned. "Ugh just imagine everyone randomly touching my belly." She complained and Steve smiled. "Better get used to it quickly then." He said, putting his hands on her belly again. Natasha smiled a bit at his gentle touch.
Steve gasped again as the child moved. To their surprise, it did that a lot. Steve was so speechless about all of this. It felt too perfect to be true. How could he have been so lucky? He was with the Natasha, the person he loved more than anyone else. She was all he ever needed and she was now carrying his child. Their child. They'd be a family. He'd given up on that dream a long time ago as well as many other dreams. The joy he felt right now in his body was too hard to explain. Natasha would be a mother. That sentence kept running around in his head. She'd get what she had always secretly dreamed of, like many other women. The imagine of her holding their son or daughter made his knees weak. At the moment, he couldn't be more happy.
It all felt so unreal to Natasha but it was hard to deny the truth as the baby moved around inside of her. It happened very often, so she was sure of that fact. She was indeed pregnant and she couldn't help but to feel happy but also extremely scared. It was hard for her to adjust to the idea. She have lived most of her life, thinking she could never have this. Not even have love. That all changed so quickly and she wondered how that was. Yes, she might have become a better person and maybe even wiped out some of that red in her ledger. But as far as she knew, there was still awfully lot of red left. Besides, tragedy and pain always seem to find it's way to the good people with the kindest hearts. When you're in a meadow picking flowers, you always take the most beautiful ones. She strongly believed that God or whatever was out there, did the same. As her child moved around in her womb, fear hit her like a bomb. This would be the most beautiful flower ever created but she'd never let anyone pick it.
