Self-Destruct

It's angst week!!! Huge thank you to Jeleego for letting me write your idea!

It was supposed to be a simple mission. So why was she screaming Jay's name as he fell to the ground while she desperately tried to break free from the goon's hold? It was supposed to be an easy win. So why was Nya on her knees beside Jay, ripping off his mask, trying to hold back her screams?

She wasn't sure what happened- just that she saw Jay falling as she heard the words "poison" and "deadly."

Her hand hovered over his chest, wanting to feel the rise and fall of his chest that was so, obviously, not there, but too scared to touch him. Tears streamed down her face as she took in his lifeless expression, something that looked so utterly wrong on his adorable freckled face.

"Please be okay," she whispered, finally laying her hand on his chest. It felt like all the air was sucked out of her lungs as she felt the hard metal of his half of their yin-yang medallion. She remembered just a few minutes earlier...

Nya took a few seconds to catch her breath after she incapacitated a group of today's criminals- some robbers potentially associated with The Mechanic. Everyone said they were moderately easy to fight, but it felt more like a medium. Maybe she just got the more skilled ones. It was okay, she could take them. She pulled back her mask to get more air before spotting more goons staring at her. Or rather, behind her?

"Nya! Look out!" Jay yelled, seconds before tackling her to the ground. She watched as a wrecking ball swung past them, then dropped to the ground with a thunk as Lloyd managed to cut the chains with his energy blast.

"You okay?" She asked as Jay rolled off of her.

"Yeah, but my head hurts." He groaned, holding the back of his head.

"The wrecking ball must've grazed it."

"What happened?"

"You... don't remember?"

"My head hurts," he repeated.

"What's two plus one?" He stared at her as if she just spoke to him in some foreign language.

"Four?" He finally answered. "No, wait, five! You're pretty."

"And you have a concussion."

"Oooh, are we fighting bad guys?"

"You aren't."

"But I wanna help."

"No, you're going to stay right here until we're done. Understood?" Jay gave her a blank stare before nodding again.

"I love you!" He yelled as she turned away.

She looked back at him, wondering if it was a ploy so she'd let him fight. "Stay. Down," she growled.

She turned around to see the crooks trying to run away, but blasted a few down with water. She ran a few steps before she heard Jay talk once again.

"I love you." Nya froze, shoulders bunched up before relaxing and she turned around to smile at him.

"Guys, guys!" Jay yelled not even a minute later. It caught the attention of Nya and Kai, who were the closest to him. He was standing- a bit shaky, but standing in the middle of the field, waving something in his hand. "I found a... an eyeball thingy!" And then she was screaming his name, but it was already too late.

Was it even possible to cry harder? He told her "I love you" twice- it was even the last words he spoke directly to her, and she didn't even say it back. She was horrible!

"Jay, I'm-I'm so sorry, please don't leave me. Please." Her pleas fell on deaf ears as she sobbed some more. Grabbing his hand, she threaded her fingers between his. "We h-had a d-date..." she trailed. "Please," she whispered, repeating it like a mantra until her need for oxygen was greater than her need to talk.

Kai had joined her at some point, gently rubbing her back. The others had surrounded Jay too. Cole was telling Jay something, but sounds didn't make sense. Then there was a gentle tugging on her shoulder, trying to pull her away. She just gripped his hand tighter.

She wasn't sure how long it was before Kai's voice flooded her senses. Just that it wasn't nearly long enough. "Sis, I know it's hard, but you have to let him go now."

Violently shaking her head, "No, I won't- I won't leave him. N-not again." Even though she denied it, deep down she knew she couldn't stay here crying forever. So, with a shaky breath, she gently pressed their foreheads together one last time.

"I-I love you," she whispered. Then she slowly sat up, letting her hand on his chest linger. "I hope you always knew- know that." Her other hand slowly loosened the hold on his fingers. She didn't stand until someone made her. The five stood in a semi-circle around him. None of them could bring themselves to walk away. Then the paramedics came, and it was a blur of screaming, crying, pushing, punching until the next thing she knew, she was back home. But it didn't feel like home. It was too cold, too dark, too quiet, silence hanging over them like a cloud.

Cole broke the silence first. "Did he..."

Nya shook her head.

"There wasn't any time," Kai said.

"Are you certain?" Zane asked. "Because if he didn't transfer his element-"

"Ninjago will self-destruct," Lloyd finished.

"The poison... it was... too fast," Nya barely got out. Tears pricked at her eyes. Jay was dead, everyone in Ninjago was about to die. They failed. She failed and was about to die because of that.

"So... we're all doomed," Cole concluded.

Wait. If this stupid world was about to destroy itself just because it didn't have an heir to an element of creation, doesn't that mean she'd see Jay in the Departed Realm? Hope filled her as she looked up at the sky. "I'll see you soon Jay," she whispered, "I'll see you soon."

1 Week Later...

"Well if Jay didn't transfer his element then he obviously has to have a child somewhere in Ninjago!" Kai exclaimed. It had been a week and there had been no signs of Ninjago destroying itself. Master Wu was going through his father's scrolls, trying to see if he was wrong. His sister had locked herself in her room and the only times he's seen her was when he tried and failed to make her eat.

Cole scoffed. "I'm pretty sure Jay would mention a secret love child."

"Unless he never knew," Lloyd suggested. "And it's called secret for a reason."

"I find it highly unlikely Jay would do that. He has been infatuated with Nya ever since he met her," said Zane.

Kai tugged at his hair. "I think we would've known if they had a baby."

Lloyd gasped. "Kai, I think you're onto something!"

"That Jay and Nya managed to hide their love child from us?" Pixal asked.

"No! I'm saying what if the child wasn't born yet?" It took a few seconds, but soon the group was scrambling to get up, racing to Nya's room.

"Nya!" Kai yelled, banging on the door. "You better open this door right now!"

"Go away!" Though her voice was muffled, she had obviously been crying.

"No!" Kai yelled and started banging on the door again before Pixal held his hand back.

"Nya please!" Lloyd begged.

"It's important!" Cole yelled.

"I don't care!" She yelled back.

"We may know why the world hasn't ended yet!" Zane said. Her response was silence.

Kai had broken free from Pixal's hold and had started hitting her door again. Lloyd had followed suit. The other three had quickly caught on: if they couldn't talk her out, they could annoy her out.

It wasn't even thirty seconds before they could hear her footsteps.

"JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!" She burst out, making everyone flinch, including herself. "P-please," she said softer, hanging her head in defeat.

Whatever Kai was about to say died in his throat the second he saw her. Nya looked awful- and that was putting it nicely. Her hair was in a messy ponytail. Dark bags hung under her puffy red eyes as if she hadn't slept in days. She was in a blue hoodie that was probably Jay's. Well, it was Jay's.

Clenched in her fist was her yin yang medallion, knuckles turning white as if she could will her yin back to life.

He wrapped an arm around her shoulder. "Why don't we go to the couch, sis?"

"I swear to the FSM the world better be ending." But she let Kai lead her to the couch anyway.

Lloyd had snuggled upon his adoptive mom's arm, but Nya stayed stiff and still. Her eyes never left the ground. No one knew what to say. One wrong move and they'd likely get decked. But it wasn't like they could not tell her. So with a deep breath and an arm around his sister, Kai started talking.

"So, we've been talking about why the world hasn't self-destructed yet." She sucked in a sharp breath. "And we think we know why."

Nya shook her head. "I don't wanna know."

"You have to know."

"I don't want to." Her teary eyes looked up at him. He's never seen her so broken before- not even when they found out their parents were gone. "Why would I have to?"

Then Kai was at a loss for words. Because how could he tell her the only reason the world didn't blow up when it would break her even more?

Luckily Cole stepped in, gently placing a hand on her knee. "You're the reason, Water Lily."

"No, no I'm not. Don't say that," she pleaded. "It's not real, it can't be real," Nya started to mumble.

"What's not real?" Zane asked. She glanced around the room, sighing in defeat. It was real, but she just couldn't accept that.

Pixal sighed, wanting to get straight to the point. "Nya, we believe you are-"

Nya suddenly jumped up, cutting Pixal off.

"I know, okay! I know that I'm pregnant with the lightning heir." Jaws dropped across the room. "We found out that morning before he..." She buried her face in her hands, trying to stifle the sobs that escaped her lips.

Kai pulled his sister back down to the couch. She cried into his chest, clutching him as if he was her lifeline. His hand stroked Nya's hair while his other rubbed gentle circles on her back.

"Why didn't you tell us?" Kai gently asked once her sobs died down. "We would've helped you."

"I would've let you guys stay home if I knew," Lloyd quietly added, tears of regret filling his eyes.

She violently shook her head. "N-no, you couldn't know. We weren't even sure if we were gonna keep it."

"Oh."

"How come you didn't tell us after...?" Cole asked.

"I thought if I ignored it maybe it would just disappear, but it didn't. And I feel so horrible for thinking that, but I don't know if I can do this. Especially without him."

"Nya, you're the second strongest person I know! If anyone can do this, it's you."

She raised an eyebrow. "Second strongest?"

"I'm the first strongest, duh." The master of earth flexed, and Nya let a tiny giggle out.

"Thanks, Cole." Her eyes glanced out toward the window. "But I lost a lot of my strength." Everyone knew she was talking about Jay. They made each other better people while still being themselves.

"So we'll help you build it back up," Lloyd told her. "We'll be there to support you through thick and thin."

Kai nudged her shoulder. "And hey, you're saving the world! That's a good thing, right?"

Nya shrugged, turning the medallion in her palm to face her. Jay would want her to. She thinks she wants to.

"I don't have a choice."

Be sure to check out Jeleego Fanart and Theories book to see the drawing that goes with her idea! The chapter is called Transfer of Elements Story Idea and Drawing.
