Chapter 32 - A Baby is Born
February 13th 1997, 5:00am.
I run out of the private jet, slipping and tumbling over down the stairs.
"Carmella!" Michael calls out and helps me up. "Please, be careful."
I brush myself off and hop into the limo as it drives off to Neverland, for the third time.
"Michael, I need to find Francesca first. You can go to the hospital, I'll be there later."
"Are you sure?"
"I have to."
The limo pulls into Neverland after a while; it really is a long drive back. I push the car door open and make my way to the house, when Michael suddenly takes hold of my arm.
"Wait," he says. "Good luck and be careful. Tell Francesca that I forgive her for anything she's done or about to do. But please, don't let her do it."
"I promise Michael, I won't."
"Goodbye," he says and turns to walk away.
As I'm walking up, I look back and see him getting into the car. But before he could, I scream, "Michael!"
He turns around and I run back to him, down the valley garden hill and past the grass, the dandelions, the sunflowers, I run and I don't stop until I reach him again...and I collapse into his arms.
"I love you," I say.
"I love you more," he tells me one more time. We share the biggest hug and I enjoy it while it lasts. I'll cherish it until the day I die because after this I feel like I won't get another one.
I finish off with a kiss on his cheek, and we both continue to our destinations.
I look outside the window from the main house and see Francesca. Out comes a woman behind her, and I have an instinct, my gut feeling tells me that that woman is none other than Priscilla Presley. She's tall, brunette, and she's looking very sophisticated.
I try opening the door, but it won't work. The lock must be jammed, so I try yelling. "Francesca!" I thud onto the door with my hands, not caring whether I broke it or not, when I suddenly feel someone's hands behind my back; I scream.
"Calm down Carmella! It's just me!" says Lola.
"Lola! You're back?"
"Yep."
"Help me get the door open!"
She pulls out a bobby pin from her bun. "For emergencies." She jams the pin into the lock, twisting and turning it in different directions, when suddenly...click!
I barge into the room. "Francesca!" I yell and run to her.
"Wow, wow, Carmella, what are you doing here?"
"Yeah, just what do you think you're doing young lady? We're in the middle of business," says Priscilla.
"I don't care! Fran-I mean, Seinora Cesca," I just then remembered what I had to call her. "Debbie Rowe is going to give birth, now! And we-you specifically need to be there, hurry!"
She covers her mouth with her hand. "Oh no, I completely forgot," she turns to Priscilla, "maybe next time?"
Suddenly, Lisa walks into the room. "Mother, have you got my...what's going on here?"
"No, there will not be a next time!" Lola interjects. "I've had it with you," she points to Priscilla, "and you," then Lisa. "Trying to get your filthy hands on someone you can't let go of, haven't you forgotten what's really important? Sure Francesca isn't exactly perfect, and I haven't known her for as long as Carmella did either, but what you're doing right here is taking advantage of kind hearted person because she feels sorry for your ass," Lola scowls angrily.
Go Lola, I feel proud.
"Well, I guess there's no reason to overstay our welcome," says Priscilla. "You can forget about the twenty million Fran. Think about what you just lost. Too-da-loo!" and off Lisa and her mother walk out.
"Don't listen to them, Seinora," I say.
"Thank you, I-I don't know what to say. Thank you, Carmella and...and..."
"Lola," Lola finishes.
"Lola," Francesca repeats.
There was a few second silence. "We have to get to the hospital! Quick!"
The three of us run out of the room, and Lola unlocks her car and we all jump in. Soon, she zooms off.
"Do you even know where you're going?" I ask.
"Yes I know where I'm going. Sheesh Carmi, have a little faith in me."
As soon as she pulls over, we get out of the car and forge into the hospital.
"Excuse me, Debbie Rowe?" I ask the receptionist.
"Down the hall, take a left, first door to your right," she responds.
"Thank you," I say and I thank God the room is not too far away.
I knock on the door and hear screaming noises; that must be Debbie. A nurse opens it, and I see Michael kneeling down next to Debbie, the midwife in front, and a couple other nurses doing their thing.
"Please, let us in," Lola says.
The nurse moves away to let us enter. "Michael, oh Michael!" Francesca says as she sees Michael.
"Francesca! You made it, thank God!" he says. I wink at him to give him the signal that everything is okay. He winks back in approval.
Debbie let out another horrid groan followed by a scream, and Michael tries coaxing her. "It's okay, shh, shh, you're doing great."
"Don't leave me, Michael," she cries out.
"I'm not gonna leave you," he kisses her hand. "Never."
"Hey, look! He's almost out!" says the midwife. "Debbie, just one big push for me and it'll be over before you know it."
Debbie gives one, huge, gigantic push...and everyone in here witnessed the most beautiful thing happen. Prince Jackson was now born.
"Oh my God!" Michael says as he sees his son being pulled out for the first time. Little Prince lets out his first cry.
"You did it!" Francesca says and attempts to clean some old puke off of Debbie's hospital gown.
"Daddy, would you like to cut the cord?" the nurse asks Michael.
"Yes please." He goes around and I watch him cut the umbilical cord, and they begin cleaning Prince up.
The look on Michael's face is timeless – I feel so lucky to have witnessed such a beautiful moment. Then it hit me...I really saved Michael this time, and not just from a light. From heartache, from betrayal, and from – as he said earlier – loneliness.
"I knew you could do it," Michael says to Debbie. "I love you."
Michael is crying happy tears, so is Francesca and Lola. And so am I.
Michael and Debbie coo with their son, and I know that it would've been horrible for Francesca to feel all these bad things if she would've just walked in now. I also notice something; it's the sun.
I become ecstatic and run to the window. The sun is out. The sun is finally out for the first time of the five months that I've been here, literally.
"Guys! It's sunny! The sun is out!" I scream.
Their heads turn in my direction. "Oh my God, it is," Michael says. "I can't believe this."
"Looks like your baby made the universe happy," Lola says. Michael smiles even more.
After a while, I delicately touch Prince's soft skin; it's perfection.
"Would you like to hold him?" Michael asks.
"I don't know..." I say.
"Come on, it can't be that bad."
I look at how cute Prince is and smile. "Okay."
He gently places Prince in my arms and I smile, gently rocking him back and forth.
"Baby you're all that I want, when you're lying here in my arms. I'm finding it hard to believe...we're in heaven," I sing gently. Prince starts to close his little eyes again, and soon drifts off to sleep.
"Carmella, that was beautiful," says Michael. "You sing?"
"Not really, but sometimes for fun."
I gently hand Prince back and I turn and tap Lola's shoulder.
"I just wanted to thank you for everything you've helped me with. I couldn't have done it without you and I'm sorry for all the things that I've said," I say honestly.
"Carmella, it's okay. I guess that's one of the reasons why I needed to be here as well."
"What are the others?"
"Well, for one thing, we both got to experience magical moments with Michael. But also, and more importantly, it's brought us closer together."
I nod my head, and for the first time in a long time, I hug her. I hug my sister and it feels so good to have that sisterly reassurance. That's something I never had before.
I stare back out to the window again. So I guess that's what's been missing the entire time. Until it became sunny again, that's when I knew I had finished what I needed to.
'
Just got interesting, eh?
