Music In Her Ears
"Kate, please! Just tell me what I did wrong!", Alex begged as he ran after his, now ex, girlfriend.
"You did nothing wrong, Alex. I just... There's someone else.", she bit her lip, rubbing the back of her neck nervously.
"Wait... Did you cheat on me?", he panicked.
"What?! Of course not! That's why I'm breaking up with you! I want this to end, before I lose control and actually cheat. I'm no cheater and you know that.", she replied, obviously offended.
"Give me one more chance. Please.", he looked at her pleadingly.
"No, Alex! We're done.", she said stubbornly and walked away.
Alex looked down and ran his hand through his hair. How could she leave him? She didn't even tell him what was wrong in their relationship. They had been dating for a good two years and he couldn't stand the thought of going on without her. He was too dependent and he always knew this would end bad, but he couldn't help it.
He wanted to win her back. He loved her. Kate might have been ready to give up on them, but he wasn't.
She avoided him for the rest of the day. After school, he rushed home and got to work. He had an idea.
He was going to write her seven songs and sing one for her every day for a week. If she gave up on him even after that, well... At least he would have tried. He would know for sure that she had really moved on and there was no hope for them anymore.
It took him three days to finish. It usually took him longer for only one song, but he was determined.
On Sunday evening, he was under her balcony.
Day 1
"Kate?", he called awkwardly.
Nothing happened, so he called her again. A few moments later, she came out.
"Alex? What are you doing here?", she asked him. She sounded annoyed and definitely didn't seem happy to see him.
"I- It's better if I just sing it for you.", he bit his lip and started playing his guitar nervously.
Alex took a deep breath and started singing.
He reminded her of how they met and the first thing she ever told him. He sang of the day they met each other's friends and the day they started hanging out with each other. He thought that she would at least tear up, but Kate Baker just yawned.
"Are you done? I've got work to do.", she rolled her eyes.
"Kate! Why are you so rude? He wrote an entire song for you.", a second girl said. Alex hadn't noticed Kate's, by one year, younger sister.
He had met Beth Baker before, since he was dating her sister, but they hadn't spent much time together. She seemed to be a really nice person, but they were nothing more than acquaintances.
She had dyed her hair lilac a couple of years back, because her natural color was black and she thought that "it was a little too dark" and that "she needed more color in her life". It suited her well, though.
"Whatever, Beth... That's not my fault. I told him it was over, he didn't listen.", Kate shrugged.
"Well, I think it was nice of him. Pretty cute too.", her sister smiled.
"Thanks...", Alex smiled awkwardly and bit his lip. He was also blushing lightly, but he always did that whenever people complimented him.
"No problem!", Beth shrugged and went back inside.
"Kate--", he started.
"No. Go away. Now!", Kate pointed towards the street and followed her sister.
Alex sighed in disappointment and left the house.
Six days to go... Maybe she'll change her mind. He thought.
Day 2
On Monday evening, he returned. Alex called her name again, and she came outside looking even more annoyed than the day before.
"You again? Come on, Alex! I already told you, we are done."
"Just hear me out.", he started playing again.
This time, he sang of their first date. Of how much fun they had talking to each other and how they couldn't stop laughing with each other's jokes. Of how beautiful she looked that day and what a great day that had been.
She rolled her eyes as he finished off. “Finally! Can I go get ready now? I'm going out with Diana.”
“Diana, huh? I thought you were going out with Jerry.”, Beth smirked. Again, he hadn't noticed her coming out. Either she was a ninja or he was always too distracted by Kate to notice her. Neither sounded good to him and he felt bad.
“Shut up! Even so, it's none of your business!”, Kate hissed at her, blushing, and ran back inside.
“If you want my advice, you should give up. She really is over you.”, Beth told him sadly. “Sorry.”
“It's not your fault.”, Alex told her.
“Of course it's not my fault, I'm just expressing my sadness on the matter.”, she laughed. “Anyway, cool song. I liked it more than yesterday's.”, she smiled and left.
Alex chuckled to himself and went back home.
Day 3
On Tuesday he was, yet again, under the balcony. He noticed that Beth was already outside. She leaned over the bars and smirked when she saw him.
“Kate owes me 20 bucks. You don't know when to quit, do you?”, she asked him. He shook his head. “Alright, then. I'll go get her.”, she rolled her eyes and went inside. Soon, she was dragging Kate outside.
“I told you, I don't want to- Hey, Alex!”, she forced a smile. Alex frowned. “Just get on with it.”, her expression darkened as she glared at him.
He started playing the guitar and sang of the day of their first kiss. It was their fifth date and they had gone to an amusement park. They kissed on the ferris wheel.
Kate scoffed. “Let me guess; you're coming back tomorrow.”
“Yeah...”, he looked down. She sighed and left without saying another word.
“You know what? You shouldn't quit just because she's over you. You should walk away from her just because you deserve better. She's my sister and all, but she's not treating you fairly.”, Beth munched on a sandwich. Where she had gotten the sandwich, Alex had no idea, but he didn't ask. “Goodnight, Tailor.”, she winked, going inside.
For some reason he didn't want her to go. His heart sank as she closed the balcony door behind her, but he didn't call after her. He only sighed and made his way home.
Day 4
You guessed it; on Wednesday Alex was under Beth and Kate's room again.
Beth was sitting on a chair with her feet on the table and was absent-mindedly eating an apple.
“Hey...”, Alex greeted her nervously.
She looked over the bars and went back to eating her apple, not looking surprised at all. “Welcome back! You know, maybe we should actually start paying you now. You come here and sing every day for a chick that couldn't care less. You deserve it.”
“Uh... Thanks, but no.”, he laughed and rubbed the back of his neck.
“Oh well... It's your choice. I'll go get Kate.”, she sighed and got up.
Alex waited, but when Beth returned, she was alone. He frowned.
“She won't come out, but if you sing a little louder she should hear you. I've left the door open.”, she explained.
“Oh. Thank you, Beth.”, he blushed.
“Don't mention it.”, she sighed again and sat back on her chair.
This time he sang of that one time they went to prom together. The second time they skipped and went for a stroll at the beach.
Alex failed to notice Beth's disappointment.
“What did you think?”, he asked her.
“Hmm... You keep singing about your dates. Sing about something that isn't that specific. I'm getting tired of listening to things that are in the past.”, she yawned.
“Don't worry, I've got you covered.”, he laughed.
“Good! I don't think I'd be able to stand listening to another song about how pretty she looks in every dress in her closet. Seriously!”, she rolled her eyes in exasperation.
“I'll do my best.”, he smiled. “Goodnight!”
“Yeah, you too.”, she took another bite off her apple.
He had lied when he said he had her covered. The last three songs were about three more dates, but he was willing to change that. The very same night, he wrote of everything that made him love Kate and then turned it into a song.
He still had two to go. The second was about everything that made Kate stand out- it wasn't much different from the previous one, but it had its moments.
The last song troubled him, though. He usually had many things to say when it came to his ex, but Alex couldn't think of anything to write, so he postponed writing it until the next day.
Day 5
This time he wasn't surprised to see Beth sitting in her usual place, reading a book. She wasn't surprised to see him either.
“Is Kate here?”, he asked her.
She rolled her eyes. “Yeah... I don't think she'll want to see you though.”, Beth bit her lip. “She has a date.”, she said a little more quiet than before.
“Oh. Can you tell her to come anyway? She might change her mind...”, Alex frowned.
“Doubtful.”, Beth sighed, but went inside to call her sister anyway.
Kate came out furiously. “Come on, Alex! This is getting old. How many times do I have to tell you? Get over it.”, she hissed.
“Hear him out, come on!”, Beth nudged at her with her elbow. Her sister glared at her, but crossed her arms over her stomach and glared at Alex.
“Well? What are you waiting for? I don't have all day.”, she shrugged.
So he started singing again. He sang with every detail why he loved her and why he couldn't let go of her, not once noticing Beth's frown and not once realising that Kate didn't really care.
In the end, Kate rolled her eyes and went back inside without saying a word.
Alex frowned. “Don't worry.”, Beth reassured him. “I liked it.”, she smiled weakly.
“You did?”, he looked at her curiously.
“Of course. You created this yourself. You put your time and effort in it. It's part of you and it describes the way you feel. What's not to like? Kate is blind to not see how much you care about her.”, she shrugged.
“Thanks. Again.”, he smiled.
“Anyway... I guess I'll see you tomorrow.”
“You will.”, he agreed.
“Good.”, she winked. “Goodnight!”, she added quickly and ran inside.
“Goodnight...”, he smiled to himself and left.
Day 6
Alex still hadn't come up with a song for the last day, but he had lost hope on getting Kate back, so it didn't really matter.
Beth wasn't on the balcony. That made matters worse and he wanted to give up even more.
“Kate?”, he called. Kate came out almost immediately. He gave her a confused glance. “Where's Beth?”, he asked her.
She raised an eyebrow. “I thought you were here for me.”, she smirked.
“Of course I am! I was just asking.”, he blushed.
“Right...”, she scoffed. “Go ahead. Let's get this over with.”
And he played his guitar and told her how pretty she was and what a nice person she could be, but it all felt fake. He felt as if he was lying.
He didn't feel the way he used to.
As he was finishing, Beth came out and learned over the bars, right next to her sister. When he ended the song, Kate rolled her eyes, once again, and went back to her room.
“Everything okay, down there?”, Beth asked him. She sounded gloomy.
“Kinda... Up there?”, he asked.
“Kinda.”, she shrugged. “Wait a minute.”, she sighed.
About a minute later she was downstairs.
“Walk with me.”, she told him. He felt the need to spend some time with her, so he did as she said.
“What's wrong?”, Alex frowned.
“Meh... Nothing. I'm just bored.”, she shrugged. He could tell she was lying, but didn't push her. “What's wrong with you?”, she asked.
“I- I don't know.”, he sighed.
“Oh, you're on that stage. Oh well... Tell me when you figure it out.”, she told him.
“Will do.”, he replied.
They walked in silence for a while.
“Alright. I wanna go home now.”, Beth announced.
“I'll walk you there.”, Alex offered.
“I can go by myself.”, she glared at him.
“I know. I want to walk you home.”, he explained.
“Oh! Okay then. Be my guest.”, she laughed.
He walked her home and when he returned home, he somehow knew exactly what he was going to sing about on the final day. And he stayed up all night to write that song.
Day 7
When he arrived at the girls' house, Beth was reading another book and Kate was looking through a magazine.
“Alright. Let's get this over with.”, Kate got up.
“You can go inside if you want. I'm not here for you today.”, Alex smirked.
“What?! Who are you here for, then?”, she asked him. She followed his gaze to Beth. “Seriously? Wow. I suspected, but I thought you had higher standards.”, she signed and went inside.
“Wait, what?”, Beth glanced at them. “Where is she going?”, she asked awkwardly.
He didn't reply. He just started singing, and couldn't help but smile when he saw Beth blush at the lyrics of the song. He told her everything he wanted to tell Kate before he got over her. Why get hung up on someone who doesn't give a damn for you, when there's someone out there giving ten?
“Wanna go out for coffee?”, he asked her in the end.
“I'm gonna go get dressed. Don't go anywhere.”, she smiled and rushed inside.
“I would never.”, he smiled to himself.
He was proud of himself. He managed to do what he had planned; sing seven songs under Kate Baker's balcony. He never specified that the songs had to be for Kate, and was glad he didn't.
Everything was going according to plan until he fell for Beth. Everything was going to plan until he finally realised that he did deserve better. Everything was going according to plan, until that one last song.
