Chapter 36
POV: Cameron
That's when I woke up, gasping.
I was no longer in the apartment, with the child, but I was still aware of his father's name present on my lips.
I was currently slouching in a hard, plastic chair that sat outside of the operation room where Sydney had taken her final breath.
I looked to the side of me and was startled to see the nurse who had awoken me from my nightmare.
It was the same nurse that had given me the bad news in my dream... or at least I think that was a dream.
"Mr. Dallas, I'm sorry to interrupt, but I have some information concerning your wife." She stated quietly, sympathy clouding her gaze.
"She's not my wife..." I muttered quietly, but it was too low for even her to hear.
Here it comes.
The horrible truth.
I had foreseen the future and here it was coming true and there was nothing I could do about it.
I didn't want to hear it though.
As long as I didn't hear it, it wasn't true. Not yet at least.
"How long was I asleep?" I asked, stalling the nurse.
The nurse looked startled. "Excuse me? Um- well we've been operating on your wife for around an hour now, but it took us around 3 to finally get her stable..." She stated quietly as she regarded me closely.
"Ah I see I- wait. Did you say stable?" I asked my heart about thumped out of my chest. "As in, she's alive??" I asked jumping to my feet and grasping the tiny nurse by the arms desperately. "Tell me! Tell me, is she alive?" I pleaded.
"Y-yes she survived. That's what I was trying to tell you!" She protested as she struggled out of my grasp, but it was futile until I released her.
"Sir, are you alright?" She asked, shaken, as she backed a good distance away from me.
I was still standing there, dumbfounded, but I finally seemed to come to my senses.
I nodded slowly, a smile starting to stretch across my face and I felt tears threaten to spill over, but I held them back as I turned to the suspicious nurse.
"Can I see her?" I asked, almost pleading as I stepped towards the girl.
She mirrored my movements and stepped away from me.
"Stay where you are, sir. I don't want to have to call security." She warned, putting a hand out in front of her. "To answer your question, no. She is still not stable enough to have visitors." She sighed, but at my look of utter dismay she added. "You may see your child though."
Why was I not aloud to see the woman I love, whom I had just seen die before my very eyes?!
I needed confirmation that it was truly just a dream.
I needed to see her, alive and breathing.
I swallowed my frustration with difficulty, but nodded reluctantly.
The nurse sighed in relief and beckoned me to follow her down the hall.
We finally came upon a huge glass window that peered into a large room with dozens of baby bassinets and cradles with babies of all races inside of them.
Some of them were squirming, some sleeping, some crying, but only one looked straight at the glass.
The child was wrapped in a blue blanket, to indicate that he was a boy.
He seemed to gaze right through the glass and right through my chest and into my heart. And no matter how cliché it sounds, I felt as if he were studying my soul.
The nurse pointed at the child staring at me with curious blue eyes.
"He is yours." She whispered, smiling. "He seems to already know who you are. It's quite strange actually. Most of the time, the child remembers the mother's appearances the most compared to the fathers." She stated quizzically.
"Really?" I asked absentmindedly as I continued to regard the beautiful child.
"Yes quite, he must be... special." She stated simply before smiling at me and walking away swiftly at the call over the loudspeakers.
Of course he's special, he's Sydney's son.
And although I didn't create him, he was mine too.
I couldn't help but wonder though, whether my dream had been correct on who the father was.
The resemblance was there, yes, but the dream had been wrong on the outcome of Sydney... so it was hard to say whether it was reliable in this situation.
I'd have to converse with Nash about it.
Speaking of which, I should probably contact him and Sam.
After shooting them a quick text as to where I was, how Sydney was, and how the baby was I heard soft footsteps approaching from the side of me.
I broke my gaze from the boy still staring at me and looked to the nurse approaching. This one had black hair and ebony skin, but was just as tiny as the last.
"Mr. Dallas?" She asked when she had come within earshot.
"Yep, that's me." I stated smirking.
"Your wife is awake and requesting to see you." She stated in formality. "Follow me." She said robotically.
I followed her down a couple of halls and passed a couple of turns until we arrived at a white patient room.
The nurse nodded to me, signaling me to go ahead inside.
I took up the offer immediately and rushed inside to see Sydney sitting halfway upright in the bed, barely looking conscious, but she was breathing and the pink was still apparent in her cheeks.
When she registered that I was standing there she smiled widely and struggled to sit up.
"Don't. Don't try to move." I ordered as I came closer and just sat in the chair next to her bed.
"How are you feeling?" I asked shakily.
The last I had seen of her was her dead corpse laying on the surgeon table, pale and lifeless.
"I feel fine, Cam. I wish everyone would stop asking me that." She rasped rolling her eyes, but still smiled. "What about you? You look as if you've seen a ghost." She stated suspiciously, narrowing her eyes at me.
I shrugged. "I'm alright." I said dismissively. "Your baby is absolutely beautiful." I whispered as I kissed a smiling Sydney on the forehead.
"Our baby." She corrected grinning up at me. "And our baby is on the way here now. I have to feed him, since I was unconscious and unable to for a while." She stated still sounding a bit hoarse.
As soon as she had said that, .in came another nurse with a baby wrapped in a blue bundle.
The nurse handed the child to Sydney carefully as she took it gratefully and smiling widely.
I had never seen her happier.
The baby reached up and touched Sydney's cheek gently, as if he was making sure she was real.
She giggled at this and brought him up closer and pecking him on the forehead.
"Wanna hold him?" She asked smirking at me.
"N-no I couldn't. You just-" I started, but she cut me off.
"Just hold your son." She insisted as she handed him over carefully.
I held the boy against my chest and stared down at his pink, chubby face. The face seemed to smile and blue eyes seemed to spark with curiosity as he reached up to stroke my cheek as well.
I smiled at him and he seemed to smile back.
"Ashton." I whispered quietly for no apparent reason.
Suddenly there was a knock on the door before it popped open to reveal the nurse with black hair.
"There are some other visitors here for you madam." She stated quietly as she stepped aside and allowed Sam and Nash to come rushing in.
"Sydney! Thank God your okay! Cameron is a fucking idiot and he didn't even-" Sam stopped at the sight of the baby in my arms. "I-is that him?" She asked extremely quiet.
I nodded smiling as I walked over to her and bent down so that she could see him, but she backed away quickly.
"Keep him away from me." She said warningly, her eyes looked wild with fear and apprehension.
"What is it Sam? What's wrong?" Nash asked confused as he stepped closer to her.
"I remember... something. I'm not sure what it is, but that boy will bring nothing but trouble!" She stated, her voice rising in fear.
"Sam! That's my child your talking about!" Sydney raised her voice angrily as she glared at Sam, unable to get up and slap her.
"No. You guys don't understand. You have to get rid of it! It's a monster! It will bring so much pain!" Her voice rose to a yell of hysteria as she clutched her head and scrunched her eyes up in pain.
"Sam! What's wrong?" Nash was panicking as he tried to restrain her as she started banging on her head with her palms.
"Please! Make it stop! Make the voices stop! Make the pain go away!" She screamed, almost unable to be understood in her hysteria.
She had tears streaming down her face as she started to sob while still screaming meaningless words.
Nash glanced apologetically back at Sydney and I before pulling Sam out of the room gently.
The weird thing was though. Ashton had not removed his eyes off of Sam from the moment she had walked through the door, but that could've just been a coincidence.
When all was quiet, Sydney spoke.
"What was her problem?" She asked, her voice small. "This wasn't a jealousy thing. That was a real melt down. She was in serious pain." She pointed out worriedly.
I nodded as I brought the boy back over to her and lay him in her arms.
"I'm not sure what was going on, but I do know that she was not faking it." I stated sincerely.
I sat back down on the chair again as I continued to ponder the situation.
"I think I know who the father is." Sydney said almost silently.
"I thought we had a established that I was the father." I replied halfheartedly smirking.
Sydney smiled at me and rolled her eyes jockingly. "I meant the biological father." She sighed shaking her head softly.
"Well who then?" I asked pointedly.
"Before I say, may I just remind you that this is just a hunch and is just because he kind of looks like him..." She trailed off as she re-adjusted her grip on the child.
"I'll keep that in mind. Now who do you suspect?" I asked heart pounding nervously.
"Matthew." She croaked quietly as she broke her gaze from mine, ashamed.
I felt my heart drop to my stomach.
Matt. The name that was upon my lips when I had awoken.
It couldn't be though. Matt would never have done that.
Nonetheless, the child was an exact replica of a younger Matt and he had indeed been at the party and had also disappeared around the same time that Sydney was gone.
How could I have not realized this sooner?
I felt a rush of anger rise up in me, but I pushed it down forcefully.
We had to concentrate on the question at hand here.
Why had Sam gone completely mental in the presence of Ashton?
