“I was diagnosed with Polio when I was 3 months old. I grew up with a disability, but my family and friends would encourage me to make the best of my condition, and not let it deter me. But I’d still wonder if I’d be able to find a life partner, who’d see me in the same light.
Years passed by like that, and I started studying for my graduation. Once, I was sitting by my window, when I spotted this handsome man, sitting by a window in the opposite flat. I didn’t know who he was, but I was instantly drawn to him.
When I asked around, I realised that he’d come to stay at his aunt’s house. Soon, when our entire building was going out for a picnic, he came too and we met. I liked him, but I didn’t know if he’d accept me, so I didn’t tell him how I felt.
We met almost everyday after that. I’d skip college, and we’d go to Hanging Gardens to spend time together. He’d even take me to my favorite restaurant to eat! This went on for a while, but one day he completely disappeared. When I asked his aunt, she said that he’d gone to Gujarat for work.
Months passed by and I kept waiting for him to send me a letter, or call me to tell me that he’s coming back for me, but he didn’t. When I couldn’t take it anymore, with whatever courage I had, I called his father up and asked how I could contact him. Luckily his father gave me a number and after almost 2 years, we spoke again.
He apologised for not being in touch, because he had a lot of work pressure and didn’t know how to reach me. He said that now he wanted for us to be together and asked me to marry him. I felt so blessed to have him in my life.
Soon, when he came back, and told his family about me, they opposed. They didn’t want him to be with someone who was disbaled, and then regret his decision. But he fought for us and made sure that they see me as more than just my disability. He promised them that he truly loved me, and that he’d never leave me.
So we got married, and it’s been 34 years since. We have two beautiful daughters, and we’ve both brought them up together. He has a stable job, and I work from home. He’s always supported me and encouraged me to be independent. It was my dream to visit Matheran, and he even took me there recently!
Even today when he goes to work, I keep looking out of the window, waiting for him to come back. He still does little things to make me happy, like buying gajra or taking me out to all my favourite places -- no matter how hard it is, he’ll make sure that I don’t miss out on anything. In him, I didn’t just find a husband, I found a soulmate. Someone who lifts me up, and helps me fly. Someone who fell in love with my imperfections, and made sure that I did too.”
