“I met Yatin while working together. He was so charming – he had my attention from day one. Even though in our office dating colleagues was frowned upon, I couldn’t stop myself. So when my roommate was throwing a party that weekend, I invited him.
I was excited to meet him. But he didn’t turn up for hours and came straight at 2 AM! After he came, we were standing in my balcony, talking. And when there was a pause, we kissed! I’m not kidding, I could feel the fireworks!
After some time, he left. For a while after that, we contemplated dating, but we didn’t want to lose our jobs. We were so drawn to each other though – it was meant to be.
For 3 years we kept our relationship under wraps. We’d steal glances at work, sneak out for dates, and even wait for everyone to leave parties first, so that we could leave together.
But soon it was no longer a casual fling for me, it was a serious relationship. We knew there would be problems because I’m Muslim and he’s Hindu. I was ready to face it, but he took some time.
I remember once, I had taken him for a spa, because we were both so tensed. After the massage, he came to me and got down on his knees. He said, ‘I don't care about anyone, I want you in my life and I’m not afraid to fight for it.’ It was the best feeling ever!
When he told his family, his mother cried and said that she’d never let a Muslim girl marry her son. And when I told my parents, my mom was okay but my dad cried and said that I’d broken his heart.
For a year we tried to convince our families. Yatin’s parents eventually agreed because their relatives told them that religion didn’t matter, and that their son would still be with them throughout. Even my mom agreed to meet them, but my dad refused. My mom told me to fix the wedding, and that dad would change his mind.
Yatin was even more concerned. I remember looking at this one ring online, which he secretly went ahead and got it custom made! The day he gave me the ring he told me, ‘I know it’s hard without your dad, but I won’t, even for a second, make you feel like this was a mistake.’
Except for my mother and brother, no one came for my wedding. I did everything from paying for my functions, choosing the lehenga, and getting ready, on my own. And the day I walked down the aisle, it broke my heart to not see my father there...
Yatin and I have been married for over a year now and each day with him is a celebration of true love. Sometimes I wonder if I was wrong, but then I remember the way Yatin makes me feel and I wouldn’t let that go for anything in the world. I hope that someday, my father can see just how happy I am; how happy Yatin makes me. I hope that someday, he’ll accept his daughter back into his life...that’s all I want.”
