6: Big news at work
Monday morning came, and I dressed for work. I looked at my outfit and realized I needed to update my wardrobe at some point, maybe add a few things. I didn't have a sense of style between office attire and leggings. I mean, isn't looking like a mom a style?
I made my way to work, stopping along the way to pick up a couple of coffees. I stood in line and waited for people to make their selections. One of them took forever. And I mean forever. It's coffee, not rocket science. You order, they pour, and you move on.
Eventually, I got to the counter, placed my order, and paid. I needed to get to work before I was late.
I pulled into the parking garage and got out. I made my way inside the office building, where I was met by Mel.
"Lina! You're lucky you got here when you did," she exclaimed.
"Why? I'm not late," I said, a bit confused.
"Mr. Logan called a surprise meeting," she replied. Great. Anytime Mr. Logan called a surprise meeting, someone was getting terminated. God, I hope it's not me. I need this job. It was one of the few jobs that helped to support Kami and me.
I was the type of employee who was always on time, never hardly missed time, and worked my tail off in hopes of getting promoted, only to be passed up with someone less qualified. I hoped Mr. Logan would eventually see my work ethic and offer me the administrative assistant position. But he never did.
"Lina, come on," she said as she dragged me to the conference room for the meeting.
We walked in and sat at a big oval table as others took their places. Mr. Logan stood in the front. He was an older gentleman who had built the company from the ground up. To say he was pretty impressed with his business skills was an understatement. His people skills were something else. He had the personality of a flea.
"Now that everyone is here," he started the meeting gruffly. "I have an announcement."
I watched as Tabitha leaned forward with her breast almost falling out of her blouse. Yep, she was one of those employees who did nothing but still got promoted. I hate office politics. If you don't fight dirty, you get nowhere.
"As of Friday, I will be officially retired. I have sold the company to someone, and they will assume the reigns on Monday morning," he spoke gruffly.
We all sat there, shocked. I watched Tabitha slink back into her seat.
"Mr. Logan, this seems sudden," Craig said to him.
"This has been in the works for a while. Someone agreed to my terms, so now I will be retiring with peace of mind," Mr. Logan told him. "That is all," he said dismissively.
"So, does this mean we can still keep our jobs?" Sam asked.
"It depends on what the new owner decides," he shrugged. Great. Now, I must worry about whether I get to keep my job. Who knows who the new owner is? My luck will be someone worse.
"Now, get back to work. I'm still your boss, and I'm not paying you to lollygag around," he barked. We all got up immediately and went to our cubicles.
Mel's right next to mine. I sat down and started to get to work when she popped her head over the top, "Psst."
I turned and stood up, "What?"
"Isn't that insane?" She asked me.
"The way things are going, this is just another thing to add to my life," I sighed.
"Lina."
"Mel, let's see, I've had a failed marriage. I can't seem to break up with Ben and Jerry, and now I may be out of a job," I said casually to her.
She gave me a look and rolled her eyes, "Look here, Miss Pessimistic, life has a way of screwing you; it's up to you if you allow it."
"It's easy for you to say; you have an amazing guy who, might I add, is not playing for the same team," I sighed.
"Only because he knows what he has," she smirked. I gave her a look. "Look, everything will be fine. We will go out Friday night, have some fun, and call it good," she reasoned.
I looked at her. Even if I wanted to stay home and mope, the girls wouldn't let that happen. Trust me; I wanted to stay home and mope. I mean, who knows what kind of boss we will be getting? He may be some cranky older man who likes to make people suffer.
"Lina, don't give me that look. We are going out on Friday and having fun. Tara and Kara already have Kelly and Wyatt taking care of the girls, and I know that Ben is taking Kami."
"Wait, how did you know?" I looked at her quizzically.
"Because Ben called me and told me you were going to try to get out of going," she smirked.
Drat. Why did my ex have to be friends with my friends still? It made things more difficult for me to say no to things.
I sighed and conceded defeat. I was so not getting out of going out Friday night.
We returned to work, working primarily through the day except for when we took lunch. Towards the end of the day, we came walking out of the building, only Brent to meet us, who was picking up Mel.
She walked over and threw her arms around him, crashing her lips into his, "Hey baby."
"Hey, doll," Brent greeted Mel.
I watched them suck face and inwardly groaned - one of the many things I did miss, kissing. Do you know the one that makes the hair on your arms stand up and your toes curl? That would be the one.
After a few minutes, they finally realized I was still standing there. "Hey, Lina," he greeted me.
"Hey, Brent," I waved.
Brent Walker was the walking definition of a god. He owned Walker's Fitness, a local gym, and was a personal trainer. He was also Mel's husband. They've been married for the past eight years. They had no children. They decided that neither wanted kids, but Mel was okay with it. She would rather spend time with a kid than hand them back off to their parents.
"So, Mel tells me you girls are hitting the new club that opened," he said.
"Yep."
"It should be fun," he said casually.
"I guess," I shrugged.
"Oh, Lina, here is trying to figure out how to get out of going," she said to him.
He looked at me, "Good luck with that one." Then he chuckled. Great, I swear there is some conspiracy to get me out of my sweats and date night with Ben and Jerry.
"Ready," he asked her.
"Yep," she said as they bid me goodbye, and then she walked off to his car.
I just shook my head. I walked to my car and got in. I sat there for a minute and laid my head on the steering wheel. I don't know why I couldn't get excited for Friday night.
I'm the only one in the group who is alone, but it's not like their significant others are joining us. Looking at them, I realize that while they get to snuggle up to someone, I get to snuggle up to a pillow.
It's been three years since Ben and I divorced, but we weren't together for years since we separated six months before the divorce. I hadn't been single since I was fifteen, and I'm still adjusting to that fact.
I started my car, wiped my eyes, and went to Tara's to pick up Kami. At least I had my daughter to snuggle. That was a plus, right?
