30: Moving day
Today was the day we moved into the new house. Everyone showed up to help. Mom took the girls, Zoe, Avie, and Zara, for the weekend. We wanted to get this done as quickly as possible so we could bring the girls home. I was missing them like crazy.
We moved boxes as the movers moved the furniture. Movers had already loaded Scott's items, which he had planned to take. I couldn't believe this was happening. Is it wrong to feel excited?
Once everything was loaded and we did a once over, we all walked out of the door, and I closed it one last time. I wasn't just closing the door to my former home but my past. It was time.
We got into the car, and Scott looked at me, "Well?"
I smiled, "I'm ready."
He chuckled as I facepalmed myself. I sounded like freaking Sponge Bob. It's what happens when your child watches the little square dude.
He laughed as we pulled out and drove over to the new house. We pulled into the driveway as the moving truck backed into the driveway. Scott and I got out of the car and walked up to the front door, hand in hand.
Everyone stood back and watched us. Scott opened the door, and I walked inside as he followed me.
Kelly looked at Tara and said, "It's about time they were both happy."
"Yes, it is," she smiled at him.
They walked towards the front door and found us in the living room dancing. Scott had put on music and took me in his arms. He held me close as he danced with me.
They all stood and watched as smiles filled their faces. Then we stopped, and Scott looked at me with a weird look on his face.
Then, before I knew it, he got down on one knee and pulled out a small black velvet box. My eyes widened, and my mouth slightly opened.
"Carolina Sherwood, I knew that night I met you that there was something special about you. I know we did things backward, but I don't regret any of it. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"
I stood there shocked as he knelt before me, holding an engagement ring. Then I heard someone say, "Mommy has her Prince Charming."
"I'm going to get a mommy! Yay!"
I turned to see Mom and Dad with the girls.
"Well," Scott asked as I turned to him.
"Mommy!" I turned to see Kami and Georgia run towards me. They grabbed my hands, and Kami said, "Mommy, say yes."
I crouched down and looked at them, "You want me to say yes to Scott?"
"Yes!"
I looked at them, thinking, "How did you know Scott was going to ask me?"
"Because he told us. He said it was a secret. But you said secrets are bad," Kami said.
I chuckled at that, "I did, didn't I?"
"Yes, you're silly mommy," she giggled.
I couldn't help but laugh. I looked at Scott, "You had Ben to keep the girls because you were planning on doing this, weren't you?"
"I have no idea what you're talking about," he said casually.
"You're a terrible liar," I said, pointing my finger at him.
"Maybe so, but I'm a better husband," he smiled. I shook my head and chuckled.
"Yes."
"What?" He looked at me.
"Yes, I will marry you," I said to him.
He pulled me to him as the girls were between us and kissed me.
"Daddy, you're squeezing us to death," Georgia yelled. We pulled back and laughed.
With that, Scott removed the ring and slid it on my finger. We stood up, and Scott kissed me as the guys yelled to start moving things. We even gave the girls stuff to do within reason. It was a group effort.
It took all day, but we got everything moved in. I was beyond exhausted—moving is always exhausting. The guys went to get dinner for everyone while we girls unpacked boxes.
"I can't believe you're getting married, Miss. I am never getting married or getting involved with anyone else," Tara said, mocking me.
I just rolled my eyes, "Yes, I know. It just feels like the right thing to do. When I'm with Scott, he makes me feel alive. When I'm not with him, I feel alone. It's like a part of me was missing," I told them.
"We hear you, girl. When I met Wyatt, I had no plans of getting involved with anyone. Jerome was such a bastard to Avie and me," Kara said through gritted teeth.
"How is Avie doing?" I asked her.
"She's okay. I've been taking her to a therapist as her pediatrician suggested. I hate having to do it. No six-year-old should ever have to deal with this kind of stuff," she said.
"When is Wyatt's court date?" Mel asked.
"It's in two weeks. Jerome claims he cannot live life because of what Wyatt did. As if he ever did to begin within his miserable existence. If you mean living out a bottle as living, I guess so," she huffed.
I suggested, "I'm sure Rob can find someone willing to help. "
"Oh, he already did. The attorney's a real barracuda. She's trying to make a deal with Jerome's attorney," she told me.
"Enough with all this legal talk. When is that boy going to put a ring on it," Tara asked her.
"We are perfectly fine with our current situation, twin," Kara said.
"Perfectly fine living in sin. At least Scott is putting a ring on it with Lina," Tara countered.
"Not everyone is marriage-minded," she shrugged.
"Twin, you must give it up and take the plunge before you're too old to get around."
"I'll be sure to race you in my wheelchair,"
She smirked. Mel and I laughed at that.
"Oh, I wouldn't be so quick to laugh, Miss Mel. When are you planning on giving that boy a baby?" Tara asked her.
"Brent and I are excellent with spending time with kids and then giving them back," she told her.
"Uh-huh."
"Some people feel the need to have kids. We don't," she shrugged. I had to give Mel credit. Kids were a big decision, and you shouldn't have them if you don't feel they aren't for you. Kids aren't for everyone, and there is nothing wrong with that.
We heard the front door open.
"Whose hungry?" Kelly yelled.
"Me!" The kids yelled.
"Then let's go into the kitchen and eat," he announced.
"Yay!"
The kids ran into the kitchen as the guys carried food behind them. They set it on the counter, and we each grabbed a container.
Kelly said grace before we ate. Then we sat down to eat. It was nice to have everyone there to share in our happiness. I looked at Scott, and he looked at me, and I couldn't help but smile. Things were falling into place.

The guys set up the beds for us, and eventually, everyone left. I couldn't wait to crawl into bed: new home, new fiancé, new life. A year ago this time, I was sitting in my old house, on my couch, watching a romantic movie and eating Ben and Jerry's ice cream, never giving much thought to ever meeting someone. It seemed surreal to me.
I walked into the bedroom and found Scott waiting for me. I walked over and crawled into bed.
"So, I thought about a short engagement," he told me.
"I don't want a big wedding," I told him.
He arched an eyebrow at me.
"You don't want to invite a bunch of people we don't know and smile for them?"
"Ah, no, I've been there, done that, and it turns out my ex is gay. By the way, you aren't gay, are you?"
He gave me a look, "Do I seem gay to you?"
"You never know," I giggled.
"I'll give you gay," he said as he started tickling me before pulling me into a fantastic kiss. Yep, he wasn't gay.
I didn't want a big wedding - just close family and friends. I also agreed on the short engagement. Why wait when things are right?
Our romance may have seemed like a whirlwind, but we had already been through everything. Honestly, I was okay with settling down with Scott. He was truly amazing.
I just had a feeling things were about to get ugly for us. I had an uneasy feeling about work. The atmosphere had been plaguing me ever since Scott got that phone call. I hope it was just that, a feeling.
