22: Dinner with the folks
With everything going on, my mom invited Kami and me to dinner, along with Scott and Georgia. She wanted to meet the guy I kept skating around when she asked. I just sucked it up and brought them to meet my parents. What could go wrong? Don't answer that.
We showed up, and I walked inside to hear music and singing from the kitchen. Oh, dear god.
We walked in to see my parents singing and getting down while preparing dinner. This moment wasn't embarrassing at all.
Mom saw us standing there and exclaimed, "Welcome to our humble abode!"
"Mom. Dad. This is Scott and his daughter Georgia," I said, introducing them.
She wiped off her hands and greeted Georgia, then looked at Scott, "So you're the guy that gave my daughter a night to remember."
"Mom!"
"Oh, you need to relax. He's hot. At least your babies will be cute," she said casually, turning and returning to the stove. My mother has no filter.
"Why don't you girls go play outside for a bit?" Dad suggested to the girls.
"Okay, grampa," Kami said as she and Georgia went outback. We could still see them through the glass doors while they played.
"So, Scott, I heard you're our daughter's boss," Mom said to him.
"Yes, ma'am, she is one of my best employees," he replied.
"I also hear you're quite the boss in other areas," she smirked.
"Mom," I said as I gave her a look.
"Oh, you need to lighten up, Lina. You're so tense," she said, waving me off. This dinner was going to be fun.
"Lina has been amazing," Scott said to her. Now I was blushing.
"That's good because Lina can be a little prudish," Mom said with a look.
I rolled my eyes and shook my head.
"Marni, you need to leave the poor girl alone."
"George, I'm just teasing her," she said as she turned and mouth, "no, I'm not."
I shook my head.
"So, Scott, I hope you're planning on marrying our daughter and not doing a wham bam thank you, ma'am," Dad told him; oh god.
"Well, sir, I do plan on something, but not now. Lina is very special to me, and my daughter adores her," Scott answered.
I couldn't help but feel my heart flutter at that comment.
Everything my parents threw at Scott, he answered with grace and dignity. He handled their interrogation beautifully. I was starting to fall deeper and deeper in love with him.
We all sat down to eat while the girls giggled and ate their food. It was good to see them happy, especially Georgia.
"Scott, why don't you tell us a little about yourself," Dad said to him.
"Well, I'm divorced with a daughter. I own several businesses, and I'm hoping to make things permanent with Lina one day," he said with a wink at me. I couldn't help but smile.
"What about your family, dear?" Mom asked.
"Well, I don't know my family," he shrugged, causing me to stop mid-bite.
I looked at my parents. I didn't know anything about this. We just looked at each other. I mean, what do you say to that?
Scott noticed the looks and said, "I never knew my parents. I grew up in foster care. When I aged out of the system, I had to work and put myself through school. I graduated from college at twenty-one and bought my first business from there. I worked my ass off and acquired other businesses. Then I met Victoria. Married her had Georgia, then divorced her after I caught her screwing my business partner." I could hear the anger in Scott's voice. "Excuse me," he said, getting up.
My parents looked at me, and I got up and followed him. I found him standing in the living room window. I placed my hand on his back and rubbed it. He let out a sigh, "Sorry, I didn't mean to cause a scene."
"Scene? That was tame compared to what I have witnessed at other times," I said with a look. He looked at me and let out a soft chuckle. Then he pulled me to him and wrapped his arms around me, "I meant what I said in there. I want to make you a permanent place in my life one day."
I couldn't help but smile.
"Maybe one day," I smirked.
He leaned down and whispered, "Lina Stevens has a nice ring."
My stomach just did a flip. Scott pulled me into a kiss. Every time he kissed me was like the first time. I could not get enough.
"Okay, lovebirds, time to finish dinner," Mom announced - way to ruin a moment, Mom.
Scott grabbed my hand, intertwined our fingers, and returned to the kitchen. Marriage? I never thought I would ever get married again, but then again, I never thought I would fall for a guy I had a one-night stand with that night. Stranger things have happened.
After dinner, we had dessert, and then Scott offered to clean up. I helped him while my parents relaxed and the kids played. While we cleaned up, a song came on the radio, Dear Future Husband. Scott started to move with it, and I looked at him as he began to sing with it. I couldn't help but laugh. I started following suit. Then he pulled a dish from my hands and took me in his arms. We began to dance.
My parents came to the doorway to watch us dance and smile. Scott spins me around as he dances with me. I laughed as we kept in step. Who knew doing dishes could be so much fun?
We ended up dancing around the kitchen and having a lot of fun. He pulled me to him as we kept dancing. Then I started lip-syncing to the song as he held his hands to his heart. Then he pulled me to him and danced with me. It was by far the most romantic thing he had ever done. It's the simple things. I didn't need the grand gestures. I just needed this moment.
He dipped me as I looked to see Mom and Dad upside down looking at us.
"Hey mom, hey dad," I greeted them.
He pulled me up as they chuckled and shook their heads while walking away. I think I just turned into my parents.
We went back to finish doing the dishes and cleaning up. Every time we looked at each other, we smiled. These were the moments, the important ones. We can share them and enjoy each other. It's what I had been missing, which Scott has shown me.
After visiting with my parents, we left, and Scott took us home. He stayed briefly before taking Georgia home to get ready for bed.
I made coffee for us while he took a seat at the table. Once it was over, I poured two mugs full and brought them over to the table; then I joined him.
"So, I've been thinking," I said as I stared at my mug.
"About?"
I stared at my mug and took a deep breath. I didn't know how Scott would handle it, and I was nervous as hell. I decided to say it. What did I have to lose?
"I think I'm in love with you," I blurted out as I lifted the mug to my lips.
He sat there looking at me expressionlessly. At that moment, I didn't know what he was thinking. "Interesting."
I slowly lifted my gaze at him. He leaned over and placed his chin on his palm. I gulped as my eyes widened.
"Because I've been in love with you from the first time I laid eyes on you," he said as a smile appeared on his lips.
"You have?" I said in a surprised tone.
"Yep," he nodded.
"Well, uh, um."
"I just didn't know if you felt the same way, so I figured I would wait for you to admit it first," he said.
I placed my mug down and leaned towards him, "And what if I wouldn't admit it?"
"You would have."
"Oh?"
"Yes, because you're the type of woman who loves simple things. You would prefer to stay in and have dinner and watch romantic movies. You enjoy long walks while holding hands. You fidget when you are embarrassed. You blush when someone mentions something sexual. But the thing I find that I love most about you is the way you care about kids and how you're willing to risk everything for them. To me, that is incredibly sexy," he said in a low husky voice.
Wow, that took my breath away completely.
"I love you, Lina," he said as he looked into my eyes.
"I love you, Scott," I responded.
"And one day, I will make you Mrs. Scott Stevens," he told me. I think I just died a little.
He pulled me into a kiss, and I didn't hesitate to kiss him back. Just everything about him was amazing. I could see my future with him and Georgia, which was fine.
