"I can't think anymore," Niall groaned, body slumping forward in his chair and resting against his desk, "I just can't,"
You didn't like the sound of Niall's words. Sure, they had been studying for their exams for a while, but it wasn't even 4:00 yet, much too early to be giving up.
"You can, Niall. Common you just have to focus," you chirped, trying to get Niall's motivation back. The boy shook his head in return.
"I'm going to fail anyway, I don't know why I'm spending so much time on this stupid test."
You were taken aback by his tone; Did Niall really believe he was going to fail? His demeanor was totally opposite of his usually optimistic and bright self.
"What are you talking about, Niall? Of course you can do it, if you just stick with it you'll get the hang of it. Everything will click soon, love."
Niall clenched his fists. He wasn't in the mood for this. For once he just wanted to be self deprecating.
"It isn't that easy for everyone, Y/N! It doesn't always work like that, and sometimes you just have to admit that it isn't going to happen, okay?? Thats where I am. So sorry to disappoint."
You blinked in surprise. Niall never raised his voice at you, this wasn't him. He still had all day tomorrow to study too, it wasn't like he didn't have the time to at least partially figure out the material. And it wasn't like test taking came any easier to you, it took hours of daily preparation just to accomplish a decent score, let alone an A.
"I-I...Uh-" You shook your head. You weren't prepared for this and what Niall said made a little ball of anger form in your stomach.
You stood up.
"I'm going to go get you some water. Try to calm yourself down before I come back," you grumbled, a little push of anger seeping through your words just to let Niall know that his outburst wasn't going under the radar. He could tell you weren't happy with him.
You took a deep breath when you got out your dorm. You knew he wasn't trying to attack you, the stress of his exam was just getting to him harder than usual.
You could have stopped at the vending machine in the front of the dorm building, but you decided to walk to the corner store instead. You needed a little more time to cool off before you went back upstairs, you weren't going to solve anything going back angry.
You walked into the store and grabbed a water for Niall. For a second you considered ironically buying Niall a snickers bar, the phrase "you're not you when you're hungry," seemed about perfect, but decided against it. You didn't need to upset Niall any further.
When you got back the your dorm and opened the door, you saw Niall back in his previous hunched over position, flinching a little when you stepped in.
He was gripping his pencil tightly like he had started working again, but his eyes were crinkled shut. He didn't acknowledge you as you set his bottle of water on the desk beside him, mumbling "Drink," quietly.
You got back to work, sitting without another word on your bed. Awkward silence was the only sound for 15 minutes, though you smiled a little knowingly as Niall took small sips of the water.
You flopped back onto the bed tiredly, starting to jokingly entertain the idea of giving up yourself as you're eyes felt dull from all your reading.
You could hear Niall shifting from your desk and jumped a little as you felt him lay down beside you in bed.
He pulled you close, his head nuzzling into your side as one arm wrapped around your waist while the other stayed folder beneath him.
You smiled a little, a hand reaching down to run your fingers through Niall's hair. You just laid there for a minute before Niall spoke.
"I'm so sorry, Y/N, I really am. God, I was such an idiot, I'm so sorry I said that, it was wrong of me," Niall apologized over and over, griping you tightly, voice muffled from your shirt.
"It's alright Niall, it's okay, I'm over it," you told him honestly, you knew it hadn't been his intention to yell.
Niall shook his head.
"It was wrong. I've just got so much pressure on me for this exam and I couldn't sleep last night and my head's been killing me all day. I know those shouldn't be excuses but I would never yell like that, there's just so much going on and I let it get the better of me."
You frowned as you heard Niall's explanation. The poor boy hadn't been feeling good the whole day and didn't say anything.
"Everything's okay Niall. Next time just tell me if you've had a bad day, alright? You don't have to hold that kind of stuff in," you said softly, pushing your body down closer to his and kissing the top of his head.
"Have you taken anything for your headache today?"
Niall nodded but mumbled, "It didn't help," tiredly.
"How bad does it hurt?" You continued, trying to figure out how much pain the blonde boy was in.
Niall moaned quietly.
"Pretty bad...been getting worse."
You sat up in bed, reaching past Niall and pushing your books off of the bed. Niall jumped a little as he first book fell but quickly relaxed once more.
"Lets take a nap, baby. That might help you feel a bit better," you said, moving back up toward your pillows. Niall opened his eyes and frowned as you moved away.
"What about studying? I still have a lot I need to look over and-"
Niall trailed off, deep down he knew that he wouldn't get much studying done with how bad his head was hurting.
"It'll be short, I'll set an alarm. And you're stressing yourself out too much, Ni. I should have seen earlier that you needed a break. I could use one too," you smiled.
Niall looked a you for a moment before crawling up the bed and curling up next to you again. He gave you a little peck on your lips.
"Thanks for looking out for me, Beautiful. I don't know what I'd do without you."
