Larry: I almost lost you
"Good morning, sunshine," Harry cooed to his 9 month pregnant husband, Louis.
"Mmm," Louis groaned. "Let me sleep..."
"C'mon, baby. I want to say hello to peanut and get ready for him to come." Harry helped Louis roll over so he was on his other side, facing Harry.
"But I'm tired."
"Please...."
"I think if I stand up, he'll fall out."
"He won't, babe. Now c'mon." He helped Louis out of bed. "Feel okay?"
"Mmm," Louis groaned. He waddled over to the stairs. He was about to start walking down when he remembered something. "I'll meet you down there, Hazz. I have to take my pills."
"Okay you sure you know what you're taking and everything?"
"Yes of course. I've been taking them for nine months now." He waddled into the bathroom and saw all of the bottles of pills.
He took out a few pills from 1 bottle and 1 pill from each of the 2 other bottles. He quickly swallowed them before heading downstairs.
He was met by Harry who had a beautiful breakfast made. "Haz, this looks delicious."
"Well dig in," Harry said, taking a bite of his. Louis put his fork through his egg and brought it to his mouth.
"Harry, this is amazing! How do you make eggs so good?"
"I have my ways..." Harry smirked. "So, did you get your pills okay? They all go down fine?"
"Yep. I can't wait till I don't have I take them anymore."
"They've done a good job of keeping you and Jace alive though."
"They have. That I am very grateful for." Louis reclined back in his chair, rubbing his swollen bump. He noticed Harry staring at him with a stupid smile on his face. "Why are you staring at me like that?"
"I'm just admiring how beautiful you are..."
"That's sweet but it's making me uncomfortable plus I'm sitting in a very uncomfortable chair." He attempted to stand up, but was hit with a big wave of nausea, dizziness, and his legs giving out. He plopped back down on the chair, making an 'oof' noise.
"Woah babe, you okay?" Harry asked, standing up.
"I'm fine. Can you help me to the couch please? I'm all of a sudden not feeling that great." Harry went over to Louis' side of the table. He had Louis wrap an arm across Harry shoulders as they slowly waddled to the couch.
They just entered the living room when Louis lost it. "Harry I-" was all he said before limp in Harry embrace.
"Louis!" Harry grasped Louis' body harder, not allowing him to fall to the ground. He picked him up bridal style and carried him to the couch. "Lou? Babe! Can you hear me?!"
He put 2 fingers to Louis' wrist to feel for a pulse. It was just barely there. "Shit." He pulled out his phone, thankful it was just in his pocket, dialling 999. He gave them all needed information and hung up.
5 minutes later, an ambulance arrived. "So tell us what happened," the paramedics instructed as they performed medical procedures.
"Well we were just walking over here and he passed out. I tried to feel for a pulse but I couldn't find a healthy one."
"Okay." One of them felt Louis' wrist, but couldn't find a beat. He then checked his artery on his neck. He felt a faint beat but it was slow and irregular. "His heart is beating but it's getting slower and off beat."
They all worked to lift Louis off the couch and onto the stretcher. They ran him to the ambulance, Harry following. He locked the house and hopped in the ambulance.
When they arrived at the hospital, Louis was immediately put into surgery. Harry was instructed to wait outside while it was being performed.
"He's under," one doctor said. Another was about to begin the c-section when a loud beep echoed through the room. "He's flat-lining! Get him cleared!"
Doctors rushed around the room and one got the zapper to get his heart starting. "Clear!" Zap. "Clear!" Zap. "Clear!"
~Fades into Louis' dream land~
Louis' eyes opened slowly, revealing the bright room he was in. He looked around, trying to recognise it, but failed.
"Hello, Louis," came a voice from behind Louis. He turned around to see someone he hadn't seen since he was 6 years old. His grandmother.
"Grandma?" He asked, utterly confused, yet happy to see her. She had passed away when he was 6 and they were always super close, making it a hard transition for Louis.
"It's good to see you again, dear," she said.
"H-how am I seeing you right now?"
"You should know, my dear."
"I don't."
"Here, come sit. We can talk." They went to the couch where Louis remembered sitting Christmas morning every year, waiting to open his gifts. "How have you been?"
"Good. I'm married now to the love of my life. We're both really happy."
"That's great. What's this lad's name?"
"Harry. His name is Harry. And we're expecting a baby really soon." He reached down to feel his belly, but it wasn't there. He began panicking. "Harry, Jace, I have to get back to them. They need me."
He stood up and walked to the door. He pulled at the handle, but it was super difficult to open. "C'mon! I need to get back to them!"
He managed to pry the door halfway open. "You're still the stubborn boy that I knew all those years ago."
"I'm not stubborn! I'm passionate! And I need my family!" He pulled the door all the way open, the next thing he knew, he was being sucked in towards a bright light.
~Back in reality~
Louis laid in the hospital bed, hooked up to about 5 machines, including an oxygen mask, all measuring his heartbeat.
Harry sat in a chair next to the bed, praying and kissing his cross necklace.
Louis then began twitching. He started fluttering his eyes, looking for Harry. It was obvious he was trying to say something, but it wasn't coming out.
Harry stood up, quickly grabbing Louis' frail hand. "You're awake..."
Louis managed to whisper just 2 words: "what happened?"
"You passed out, love. They had to take you into surgery but they weren't able to do anything."
"What about Jace? Is he okay?" Louis said, reaching down to his belly and happy to feel it still full.
"They said he's doing perfect. But since Niall's our doctor, he said he wanted to talk about what's next tomorrow."
"Okay."Then the room door opened. In walked Lottie.
"Lottie," Louis said, sounding happy.
"Hi, big bro. I can't believe you flat lined," she said, closing the door behind her.
"I wasn't going to tell him that, Lotts," Harry said.
"Oh. Well what important is that you're here now."
The three of them continued to talk for a while. Eventually, Lottie had to head home. After she left, Harry decided to stay the night with Louis. "Harry?"
"Yes, Boo? Do you need the doctor?"
"No. I was wondering, how long did I flat line for?"
"Three minutes," Harry answered. "You were dead for three minutes."
*~The next day~*
"Lou, babe," Harry whispered to Louis. "You have to wake up. Niall's here."
Louis' eyes fluttered open. "Hi, Louis. How are you feeling?" Niall asked.
Niall had been Harry and Louis' best mate ever since they were all in 3rd grade. Niall went off to get his masters degree in ICU nursing while Harry and Louis continued their lives together and they managed to stay best mates.
"I'm doing alright. My back is a bit sore," he said just above a whisper. He wasn't really awake yet so he didn't feel like doing much talking.
"That's normal. So I wanted to go over your X-Rays we took yesterday." Niall gave Louis the pictures taken the day before. "So as you can see here, these are your pills that you took yesterday. The little caplets are still there and a bit of the medication inside has dissolved inside you. Here's the problem... You didn't take the pills you were supposed to."
"What do you mean?" Harry asked.
"Well he's supposed to take the vitamins and the pain killers that are allowed during pregnancy, but he took and anti-labour pill that he was prescribed when he was having Braxton Hicks contractions at five months. He also took a blood sugar raiser and three ibuprofens, which is all very bad for the baby."
"So what are we gonna do?" Harry asked.
"We have to do an operation. We're going in right here," Niall explained, pointing to a small section of Louis' big belly. "We're going to remove the pills and whatever undissolved medication there is left."
"When?" Louis asked.
"As soon as possible. The surgeons would like me to give you the anaesthesia now so we can prevent anything more from happening to you or Jace for that matter."
"Erm, okay."
"Okay." Niall gave Louis an injection of anaesthesia. "That should kick in soon. They'll be in to take you to the theatre when you're asleep."
20 minutes later, Louis was fast asleep. He was taken to the theatre to begin surgery. During the time, Louis went back to his special place.
~~~~~~~~~
"You're here again, Louis," cane the same old voice.
"I am. I still don't know where we are though," Louis said. "And why I keep coming back here."
"It's a sign, Louis."
"Wait, it can't be. Because you.... died so does that mean we're in heaven?"
"It's up to you, Louis. I can simply be a figment of your imagination or you're really up here with me."
"But I can't die. My family needs me, grandma."
"I'm afraid it's not your choice."
Louis went over to the door, only to discover there was no handle or any way of getting out. The windows were locked tight, making it impossible to leave. Or so Louis thought.
"Wait, can I go get something from my room?"
"Of course, Louis." Louis ran upstairs and found, exactly where it had always been, his lucky football. He took it and ran downstairs. "What are you doing?"
"I know you always said no kicking footballs in the house, but I need to do this."
"Whatever you need, dear." She watched as Louis took a deep breath and kicked the ball right towards a window. It broke open and Louis climbed through the small space.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Louis' heavy eyelids fluttered open. "Look, he's waking up."
He looked around to see Harry, Niall, Liam (their other best mate and Niall's husband), and Lottie. "Hi, babe. How are you feeling?"
"Good. I-I keep going somewhere..."
Everyone looked at each other in confusion. "So, Louis, the doctors successfully removed the pills. You have about ten stitches along the procedure wound so don't sit up, don't roll over on that side, and try not to walk around unless you'll be super straight. We don't want to aggravate that area otherwise we have to redo stitches and such which is no fun for you or us."
"Okay. Thanks, Niall." He looked over to Liam. "It's been a while, Liam. What are you doing here?"
"Niall keeps telling me about what's going on with you so I had to come see you."
"Thanks."
"Liam, can I talk to them real quick? It'll be super quick," Niall interrupted.
"Of course." Liam went outside the room and Niall started talking.
"Okay so, since you took an anti-labour pill, you are no longer able to go into labour on your own. It has to be an induced labour or a c-section. Do you have any idea as to what you want to do? Because we all know Jace can't be in there forever."
"I want an induced labour," Louis answered.
"Woah are you sure babe?" Harry asked, a bit unsure.
"Yes of course I'm sure."
"Okay. I guess we want an induced labour."
"Okay great. We're going to have to induce you tomorrow, okay?" Louis nodded. "We don't want those stitches to come out."
"No we do not."
*~The next day~*
"Good morning, Louis. I just wanted to say we're going to start in about an hour. Is that okay?" Niall said, poking his head in the room.
"Yeah that's great, thanks."
"Can I run home and get the bag, babe? Just so have more clothes and onesies and everything for Jace?" Harry asked.
"Yeah. Hurry though. I want you to be there."
"Of course I'll be there, love." Harry ran out to run home and be back by the time it's time for his baby's birth.
While he was throwing some more little onesies in the bag, he received a text. It was from Niall.
From Niall🍕: Hurry back. He's going into surgery.
Harry grabbed the bag as is and ran yet he car. He hit the pedal (heavy metal) to get there as fast as he could.
As soon as he got there, he saw Louis being wheeled somewhere on the bed. It looked like he was woozy from something too.
"What's going on?" Harry asked, panicked.
"I'm getting a c-section. Something came up and Jace can't be pushed out. He needs to be removed surgically," Louis slurred. He sounded exhausted.
"Well I want to be there."
"Change into these as fast as you can," Niall said, handing Harry a pile of blue, plastic clothing. He just slipped it on over his clothes just in time for Louis to be set up and about to be cut. "Okay we're starting, Lou."
Harry grabbed Louis' hand. "Can you believe that we're going to be holding our baby boy soon?"
"No I can't. We've waited so long for him and now he's finally coming," Louis said. "Not quite in the way we were planning but at least we know he's okay."
"So why couldn't you push him out?"
"It's just because of my stitches. If I add to push, I would probably pop them out and we both know how painful and awful that would be."
"That would be bad." Harry looked over the cloth separating Louis' top half and bottom half, including belly.
"How's it going over there?"
"It's looking good. A lot of blood but it looks good."
"Okay I'm glad."
Harry watched the whole procedure. "Okay, Louis. Your going to feel some pressure then a release, okay? That's just us pulling Jace out," Niall said.
"Okay I'm ready." Harry watched as Niall pulled out his son from Louis' womb.
"There he is, Lou. Oh my god, he's so perfect," Harry cooed and awed over his son.
Niall clamped his cord and Harry cut it. Louis still hadn't seen his son so he was dying.
Jace was weighed and cleaned quickly before Harry took him in a blanket to where Louis laid, about to get stitched up.
Louis felt tears in his eyes the moment he saw his newborn son. "Oh my god, look at him. He's so perfect. He looks so much like you, Harry."
"He has your perfect little nose, Lou."
"Can I hold him?"
"You have to wait to hold him until you're all stitched up. It's just so it doesn't aggravate the open cut," Niall said. "Sorry."
"That's okay. Just as long as I can see him, I'm fine." The Styles watches as Jace opened his eyes for the first time.
"Look he has your blue eyes, Lou."
"Everything else is yours though. Look at him. He's a mini Harry I'm telling you."
"Welcome to the world, Jace William Styles," Harry said.
*~A week later~*
"Babe! Jace! I'm home!" Harry called through the house.
"Shush!" Louis said. "I just got him down for a nap and I'm trying to do some work here. Please be quiet."
"Oh sorry. I'm gonna go get him."
"No! Harry please don't. I just said he's asleep. Please. I just need a little time to do some things."
"It's okay I'll just hold onto him."
"Harry, he's sleeping. Don't wake him up."
"It's okay! He can just sleep on me!" He started running to the stairs, but was instantly stopped by Louis' cry in pain.
"No Harry don't!-" Louis tried standing up super quick to stop Harry but he slammed his stitches into the table he was sitting at. "Agh!"
"Lou, babe! Are you okay?" Harry crouched next to Louis' abdomen. "There's blood. Let me see what's wrong."
Louis cried as Harry lifted his shirt. "Oh my god. Your stitches are falling out. We need to go to the hospital."
"How do I stop the bleeding?"
Harry tore off his shirt and placed it on his abdomen. "Get in the car. I'm gonna the the baby."
Louis hopped in the car and Harry joined him minutes later.
When Louis was all fixed up, he laid in bed, looking at Harry. Harry sat on the side of the bed, clutching tightly onto Louis' hand.
He looked at Harry with confusion. He was still a little woozy from the procedure and the pain medications. "Where's Jace?"
"He's with Liam, babe.
The next day, Louis was fixed up and was sent home.
"I'm glad you're okay, Boo. You had me worried."
"Me too. It scared me bad."
"I love you."
"I love you too, Hazza."
