One Dance
It's that time of year, the annual spring dance in full swing. I love going to the school dances, one of the things that's great about school, plus having fun with my best friend Liza.
Stirring the red liquid in the cup, the mainstream song playing over the speakers. He's right across the dance floor.
This is my chance but my feet are glued to the ground. Lucas Kane has been my crush for three years, all I do is stare at him, no courage to speak or greet when we cross paths. What if he's just good to look at? What if he's shallow? What if he's not interested?
"You're just gonna stand there and not ask him?!" Liza jumps from behind me clutching my shoulders, I spill a bit of my drink as it splashes on the floor.
"Relax, there's more time!" I assure her grabbing a napkin squatting forward not to rip my dress cleaning the spot.
"It's now or never! Get up, go!" She pulls me up strongly, gesturing a thumb to Lucas and his friends hang back laughing leaning their backs against the wall. She's right, its what i want to do. He has two choices, one could devastate me, the other could give me an amazing memory.
I puff my cheeks stepping forward, maneuvering away from the students on the dance floor. His friends leaving his side, now he's alone. Before I knew it I am standing in front of him. Mouth opening Lucas eyes direct on me.
"Hi! " I say and giggle awkwardly.
He simply waves, "Judith how's it going?!" He knows my name! Eeek!
"Hi!" I repeated.
"You said that already!" He chuckles white teeth on display scratching behind his ear.
"Yeah!" Shaking my head at my nerves, heart beating fast, palms sweaty I place my cup on the table I wipe my hands on my dress, pushing my strand of hair that fell out of my ponytail. The fast music stops, it begins playing a slow, melodic tune. His eyebrow crooks up waiting for me, *just ask him!*
"You wanna dance?" I blurt, sucking in both my lips. *Please say yes.*
He responds with a grin lifting up from the wall taking my hand in his strong one leading the way to the dancefloor we stand on the side my arms around his neck, his around my waist.
Goosebumps form on my skin, stomach fluttering I clear my dry throat, my first time being this close to him I stare everywhere else.
"It's ok to look at me."
"I do that enough."
"I don't. A beauty like you shouldn't hide." Our eyes meeting again, seeing my reflection in his pupils.
To me he was more of Picasso or Vermeer, an abstract painting. I smile shyly looking down to my shoes. If I stare into them long enough I might melt.
His fingers gripping mine we continue to sway, I feel his lips kiss my forehead softly. My cheeks hurt from smiling.
