A Test Of Death

Growls echoed behind me.

I turned slowly yet the movement may have seemed swift to a normal eye.

My steel grey irises fixed on the person who had won the executive seat in the citadel of my heart.

Which currently beat with increasing rhythm as he approached.

His icy blue gaze had a unique and hardly seen warm hue. It started to break the rock of pain that had been hitting my soul for the past few months.

A few hundred hairy crawling humanoid figures hardly hid even in the canopy of the dense century-old forest.

The tall lean bearer of the blue warm gaze neared me with long and firm steps till he was within an arm's length.

Then, he did something which I always had yearned of, from the moment I understood him.

He smiled.

The sun's beams reflected an unearthy talent that was ever created.

His smile.

I had longed for it.

Since the War of the Humans had started,

Our home abode in the Sulan jungles

Had become a cage.

We were Trapped.

Silenced.

And more than anything else, Isolated.

The puppies, all the wolves- young and old caged.

We were like birds without wings.
Or like having wings but no strength.

All because of one person,

Me.

The War left us with two options.

Join the mighty side in the war of humans and die if they loose.

Or

Don't join anyone. And die anyways if any of them find us, for almost all countries in the world were in the war.

The Alpha and the Luna were to decide.

Lives of hundreds of werewolves of our Pack were in the hands of two amateurs.

Both the options were no less fatal. If the mighty loose, so do we.
And the price would cost
a river of dark red blood staining our motherland, with no further progenies to hand over, our beautiful boon.

The Alpha approved the first option considering the conclusions of the wise.

The grey eyed Luna tugged to the second option.

The second option seemed to others like a dead end from both sides. Here, the threat was all too prevalent. All too evident.

A self murder, they thought.

But the Luna was wise.

Carved deep inside the very essence of her being, peace and patience. She knew they stood the worst nightmares of the world.

A prophecy foretold by a supernatural like themselves whose age the times had forgotten.

'She, who is the daughter of the wisest in the kingdom shall take the Pack of the sacred Jungles of Sulan away from death himself.'

The Alpha trusted the Luna, his soul.

The pack hid in the jungles far too deep.

Yet the humans should not be underestimated.

Majority of the other packs joined the Mighty side.

A few followed our way. Being hidden yet aware. Closed yet informed.

A high risk choice and the Alpha, though agreed, was not the same anymore.

His choice was different yet he trusted me with his entire pack.

Fires and gunshots rang day and night. Our Pack Warriors lacked any sleep. Drained of energy, staying on tree tops for days together.

For the jungle though deep, enclosed by human habitation from all sides was the only route left open between the two human armies to go the other side unnoticed.

And war always craved surprise.

Puppies were separated from their families.

Wives weeped while others joined the Warriors, entrusting their pups in the hands of the Older.

Food was scarce.

Yet only about a dozen warriors were killed in the jungles.

Others were safe.

The Alpha and the Luna, were with the warriors yet far from them.

Within a kilometer radius of the safe zone of our pack was as far as they could go.

While our warriors were hundreds of kilometers far, patrolling every nook of the jungle.

The Alpha was agitated. Angry of himself. He could not protect his Pack. His Warriors were dying there and here he was in the safe proximity of the pack.

All the necessities were burning out . Puppies cryed. Their mothers helpless.

After six months of self imprisonment, today, I was starting to doubt my decision for the first time now.

My thirst did not shrink and my body stunk bad.

I longed to see my pack.

After half a year of dry food and scarce water, I decided to check on them.

" I am heading back."

He sighed before nodding.

Returning back , I assured them we would soon recover and they need not worry.

I was unsure myself, but, for my pack, I was their Luna, their light in the dark scary times.

Drifting without thought, I had arrived to the only river near the pack edge.

After finishing my routine, I had sat there for some time giving a second thought to my decision, when my Alpha had come. It was hard to miss the warm look in his eyes.

Hundreds of weres stationed behind him.

"Facia, how did you know? " he whispered, his breath now tingling my skin.

I was puzzled.

Without lending me any time to ponder, he picked me up bridal style,

"We are safe! Our decision was right. The Mighty power was defeated due to the secret weapon of the other power. We took the right step. Praise the Luna! Without her we would all have died. "

And within seconds, all the wolves were now humans of all ages.

Claps thundered. There I could see unshed tears of mothers reunited with their puppies and their soul mates.

The forest seemed to sing as well.

Leaves fluttered and danced with the wind.

Cries resonated, but of joy and pools of happy tears burst.

Zodiac kissed me.

That moment was framed in my mind forever. Replayed several times, it never failed to remember me to have faith in myself.

That day I sobbed like a nana.

This tough time made me stronger.

The prophecy was right.

Peace had won in the end.

Patience too.

Although, without their trust , it would have failed miserably.

They trusted my judgement.

Threw their lives in my hands.

From that day, a strange bond was established with my pack.

A bond of Trust which passed the test of war and the test of death itself.
