Chapter 4: Operation: Outbreak Pt. 2
A/n: I would like to take some time and thank you all for the support on this story. Thanks for over 1000 views! Hope you enjoy the next part.
(Y/n) POV:
'Where am I?'
Around me were the cliff sides of mountains. The air felt dry, and a mild brush covered the area. In my hand was my mother's pistol. However, it wasn't clean. I was covered from head to toe with blood. My eyes blinked. Then piles of bodies appeared around me. Realization kicked in harder than Sledge's hammer.
'Why am I reliving this?'
Flashback...
I had just slaughtered every single rebel soldier. They killed my parents, so I returned the favor. With one bullet in each head. Suddenly, footsteps were heard behind me. I snapped around aiming my weapon. In front of me were about a dozen men in camouflage outfits. They carried assault rifles and modern gear. Their weapons all aimed at me. Then one of the soldiers spoke.
Soldier:"Boss, what do we do with this kid?"
I looked to the man addressed as Boss.
Boss:"Call it in. We're coming back with an extra passenger."
The soldier nodded and radioed in someone. Boss lowered his weapon and held his hand out in peace.
Boss:"Do you speak English?"
I didn't respond. My English was good, but I wasn't sure if these men were to be trusted. However, I only had six rounds left. Reluctantly, I spoke.
"Who are you?"
Boss sighed in relief.
Boss:"Thank god, you speak English. I was sent here to kill these men."
He gestured to the dead rebels.
Boss:"However, you already did my job."
Soldier:"Boss, evac. is on their way."
Boss nodded and looked back at me.
Boss:"Could you lower that weapon?"
I glanced around. If these men wanted to kill me, they would have already. My gun lowered to my side.
Boss:"What's your name?"
"(Y/n)."
I didn't want to give my full name yet.
Boss:"Hello, (Y/n). My name is Mark Syrius."
Flashback end...
My eyes opened. I was lying on a soft bed. The heart beat monitor beat steadily beside me. I blinked several more times to wake myself up. Then I removed the tubes running into my nose. After the uncomfortable process, I sat up to be met with considerable pain. My teeth grit together, and I had to hold in a groan of pain. When the pain subsided, I noticed something. Ash was sitting at my bedside asleep. In her hand was my mother's Jericho pistol.
'Did she keep watch over me?'
I shut off the heart beat monitor before climbing out of bed. My bare feet felt the dirt ground. I walked over and put on some pants, and then returned to Ash. My arms gently lifted her sleeping body and carried her. I walked over to the bed and set her down. She hummed cutely in her sleep. Then I pulled some blankets over her after retrieving the pistol. I looked at the gun in my hands. Ash took good care of it. Suddenly, someone cleared their throat behind me. I turned to see Doc standing there.
Doc:"I see that you're up, Kyle."
I nodded silently.
Doc:"Or should I say, (Y/n)."
A chill went down my spine. He figured it out.
"So you know."
Doc nodded and stepped over to me.
Doc:"I must ask you something. Why would you hide your return?"
He stared sternly into my eyes.
Doc:"Is it because there's a secret agenda you have?"
I shook my head.
"If less people know that I'm alive. It's for the better."
Doc nodded.
Doc:"How so?"
I thought about it for a minute.
"Many people want me dead. Other's want my past to be buried. Some want to use my skills. This all places anyone I work with in danger."
Doc seemed surprised with my response.
Doc:"A bit broad, but I didn't depict you to care for others well being."
I looked back at Ash. She was still sleeping soundly.
"I look that way, I guess."
Doc:"However, all of your actions prove otherwise."
"Actions speak louder than words, or so I've been told."
Doc nodded. He then patted my shoulder before walking away. However, he stopped at the exit.
Doc:"I'll keep this discovery to myself for now. However-"
He turned to face me.
Doc:"If anyone asks who you are, I will tell the truth."
I nodded silently. Then Doc left the tent. My hand lifted up my mother's pistol. I stared at the weapon in deep thought.
'How will I reveal myself to the others?'
I walked over to a table and set the pistol down. Then I began to disassemble the weapon. Just like my mother taught me.
Timeskip brought to you by chibi (Y/n) bamboozling Bandit...
(Ash POV):
I let out comforting sigh.
'This bed is really comfy. Wait. Bed?'
I jolted awake. I was sleeping in a bed. Immediately, I grabbed for (Y/n)'s pistol, but it was gone. Panic began to fill inside of me. I hopped out of bed and went exited the tent's room. My eyes located the gun immediately, It was lying partially assembled on a table. I walked over to inspect it. Then I heard the tent flap open behind me. I pulled out my pistol before turning around to aim. My eyes widened. It was Phoenix standing at the entrance.
"Kyle?"
Phoenix:"Hello."
I stared at him in shock.
Phoenix:"Do you intend to shoot me?"
I blushed in embarrassment and put away my weapon.
"S-Sorry. I you surprised me."
Phoenix:"It's okay."
He walked over to the table beside me. His hand set down a box of bullets. He began to continue to assemble the pistol. I stared at him, while he worked. This was when I realized he was shirtless. A blush formed on my face, as I kept staring at his body. I was interrupted from my daze when he clicked the slide into place.
Phoenix:"All done."
He turned to me and looked at me puzzled.
Phoenix:"Are you alright? You're looking red."
I shook my head and stared into his (e/c) eyes.
"N-Nothing. I'm fine."
He nodded and held out the weapon. I took it, and our hands met. A little spark came from the touch before I removed my hand. I looked at the weapon. Perfectly cleaned and assembled. It was like he knew exactly how to treat the weapon.
"Are you familiar with this weapon?"
Phoenix nodded. We made eye contact again. I couldn't help, but get lost in his mysterious eyes. Then Phoenix spoke.
Phoenix:"Why did you watch over me?"
I snapped out of my thoughts and answered.
"I felt responsible and wanted to monitor you."
Phoenix:"For what?"
"You saved my life."
Phoenix:"It's no big deal."
I shook my head.
"You could have died."
Phoenix:"Then you would have lived."
My eyes widened to his response.
"You barely know me."
Phoenix:"That doesn't change anything."
I shook my head in disbelief.
"No one would sacrifice that much for someone they barely know."
Phoenix:"Well I'm the first one then."
"Don't you have any friends family that will worry for you, if you die?"
Phoenix looked a little saddened.
Phoenix:"No. No, I don't."
This shocked me. Then I began to feel guilty.
"I'm sorry. I didn't-"
Phoenix:"It's fine. Now you know that other's lives matter more to me than mine."
He picked up his shirt and began to leave.
"Wait."
He stopped and faced me. I approached him.
"Will you value your life more, if someone were to care for you?"
Phoenix thought for a bit.
Phoenix:"Sure, but who would?"
I blushed a little.
"I-I would."
Phoenix:"Now why is that?"
I shifted nervously.
"Umm. You're kind-hearted, you saved my life, and you are willing to sacrifice for others. That's a person I would care for."
Phoenix:"You're right except for the first part. I'm not kind-hearted."
I looked at him confused.
"How? Were you the one who brought me to bed?"
Phoenix nodded.
"And you saved my life multiple times. That fits the description."
Phoenix:"Those were just with you. There are a lot of things you do not know about me."
"What are they then?"
Phoenix shook his head.
Phoenix:"Let's hope you never find out."
He turned away, but I grabbed his arm.
"I don't know what you may have done in your past, but..."
Phoenix faced me, and I stared into his eyes.
"From what you've told and done for me. I know deep down that you're a caring person. Not someone horrible you might think you are."
He looked at me surprised.
Phoenix:"You really mean that?"
"Every word."
A small smile formed on his face. He gently grabbed my hand and held it.
Phoenix:"Thank you, Eliza. Maybe we can get to know each other better."
"S-Sure."
I blushed from his contact. He then let go of my hands.
"Does lunch sound good?"
Phoenix:"It's good. See you later, Eliza."
He exited the tent. I stared at where he left for several seconds. Suddenly, my entire face reddened.
'Did I just ask him out on a date?'
Timeskip brought to you by chibi (Y/n) triggering all 7 goo mines...
(IQ POV):
"Hey Ela."
Ela looked up, and I walked over to her.
"What are you doing?"
She looked down to her notepad. There were drawings of people, nature, and other things. However, there was one that stood out. It was (Y/n) in full armor, surrounded by flames, but standing in a blizzard.
"Is that (Y/n)?"
Ela:"Yeah."
"It looks nice."
Ela:"Thank you. I tried to capture (Y/n)'s personality."
"How?"
Ela:"He is a cold and blunt person on the outside, but his compassion and care burns brightly on the inside."
I nodded impressed. Then the sound of footsteps began to approach us. I turned to see Ying walk up to us.
Ying:"Hey Monika. Hey Ela."
Ela:"Hey Siu."
"Hi Siu, what's up?"
Ying:"Six wants the three of us to head out to New Mexico."
"I thought there was enough operators already."
Ying:"There was, but Marius (Jager) was injured."
I stood up worried.
"What happened? Is he okay?"
Ying:"He's fine, but they're out of pilots to spare on operations. If anything is to be done, we need to travel to and back on foot."
Ela:"Sounds tiring."
Ying:"And dangerous. That's why Six wants us three to go. Not to mention, there's a certain operator not interacting well."
"Lion."
Ying nodded.
Ela:"Well then. When do we leave?"
Ying:"As soon as possible. I'll meet you two at the helipad."
Ela/me:"Got it."
Ying left, and I turned to Ela.
Ela:"I guess it's nice to go see Ash again. I wonder how she's holding up."
"Yeah. Me too."
Ash really was torn up about (Y/n)'s death. However, she was not hesitant to accepting the mission meant for (Y/n). I'm guessing that she was determined to help others for (Y/n). I let out a sad sigh. It too, sucked for me that (Y/n) died. Just when I wanted to know the guy, he had to die. I could 't even thank him properly. However, I must move on. (Y/n) would not have wanted that.
'(Y/n). I hope wherever you are, that you find someone to care for you. Like you cared for us.'
I began heading to the helipad.
Timeskip brought to you by chibi (Y/n) with 4 armor buff...
(Ash POV):
I brushed my hair, while looking into a mirror. Then I straightened my combat outfit.
'Kyle won't think this is too formal right? We are on a military camp. This is just lunch with two friends. Nothing more.'
Oddly, a part of me wanted it to be more, but I dismissed it when my watched beeped. I looked at the time, and my eyes widened.
'Crap! I'm going to be late.'
I put on my cap and exited the tent. Then I made my way over to the dining area. When I arrived, I saw Phoenix sitting at a far table staring off. I let out a deep breath and walked over nervously.
"Hey."
He turned and saw me.
Phoenix:"Hey."
"Sorry that I'm late."
Phoenix:"You're not late. I'm just early."
I lightly smiled and sat across from him.
Phoenix:"I'll get the food. Anything you want specifically?"
"No. Anything is fine."
He nodded and went to get our meals. I removed my hat and checked myself again. Then Phoenix returned with two trays and handed me one.
"Thank you."
Phoenix nodded and sat down. We began eating in silence, until I decided to break it.
"What would you like to talk about?"
Phoenix:"I would like to learn more about you."
"Me?"
He nodded. I set down my utensils and looked at him.
"What is it you want to know about me?"
Phoenix:"Anything you would like to tell me is good."
I nodded. I told him things about me. My parents, where I came from, some adventures from the FBI SWAT team, and my custom launcher.
Phoenix:"Impressive design."
"Thank you. Do you have anything?"
Phoenix:"I used to. I mainly prefer bare bones. Like the Jericho you have."
I rested my hand over the gun.
"Yeah..."
It brought back memories of (Y/n).
Phoenix:"Sorry to sadden you."
"No, I'm okay. It's just that this pistol belonged to someone else."
Phoenix:"Who?"
I let out a sad sigh.
"His name is, (Y/n)."
Phoenix:"Is he gone?"
I sadly nodded.
"He sacrificed himself for me. Much like you did."
I looked up at Phoenix.
"In fact, you really remind me of him."
Phoenix:"How so?"
"You're blunt on the outside, but caring deep down. (Y/n) was very much like that."
Phoenix:"How did you feel about him?"
"I didn't trust him at first and thought he was mean, until..."
Phoenix:"Until what?"
A tear rolled down my cheek.
"I read his file."
Phoenix:"What did it say?"
I told him everything about (Y/n). I didn't know why I told Phoenix, but felt like I could trust him. He reminded me so much of (Y/n). The resemblance gave me mixed emotions. I was sad that (Y/n) was gone, and that he couldn't find someone to care for him. However, Phoenix was here with me. I was given a chance to help out someone out like (Y/n). Not only that, I felt happy to interact with Phoenix. He listened very well and never interrupted. Eventually, I finished up.
"So yeah. That's pretty much all I know about (Y/n)."
Phoenix silently nodded. I let out a sad sigh.
Phoenix:"Hey."
I looked up at Phoenix.
Phoenix:"Whatever guilt or sadness you may feel, I'm sure he doesn't blame you."
"What do you mean?"
Phoenix:"If he was willing to give himself up for you, it was his decision. Like me."
"How would you know?"
He looked away for a second.
Phoenix:"He and I are more alike than you think."
I nodded in understanding. Then something popped in my head.
"Do you happen to know who (Y/n) is?"
He flinched a little.
Phoenix:"Yeah. A SAS mission."
This made me curious.
"Can you tell me what happened?"
Phoenix sighed sadly. I felt a little guilty.
"Sorry. You don't have to-"
Phoenix:"No. You told me a lot about yourself, so it's only fair if I do the same."
"That's not necessary. I don't want to make you uncomfortable."
Phoenix gently smiled.
Phoenix:"It's okay. You're a comforting person."
I blushed a little.
"Umm. T-Thank you."
Phoenix:"I'll tell you what happened."
He cleared his throat before speaking.
Phoenix:"It was a hostage rescue mission. Terrorists have kidnapped the princess of England. No one could enter without the hostage dying. So they sent a kid dressed as a butler. He went in and eliminated all hostiles and extracted the hostage. Let's just say, the princess was more terrified of (Y/n) than the terrorists."
I nodded sadly. Then it was like the one Thatcher was at. Phoenix then stood up.
Phoenix:"Thank you for the meal."
"Oh. Um. No problem. You got it for us."
Phoenix:"Thanks for inviting me then."
He gave me a small smile. This made me elated.
"You're welcome."
He began to walk away. Then I stood up and called out to him.
"Hey."
Phoenix looked back at me. A slight blush formed on my face.
"W-Would you like to have dinner with me later?"
Phoenix:"Sure. Maybe after the mission today."
I grew confused.
"Mission today? You just got out of bed."
Phoenix:"That isn't stopping the infection from spreading."
I walked over to him.
"No. I will not have you out there injured. That's an order."
Suddenly, rushed footsteps approached us. I turned to see Glaz.
Glaz:"Ash. We got a problem."
"What is it?"
Glaz:"Thermite and his team are trapped. The whole 'getting back on foot' was a bust."
I silently cursed myself.
"We'll need to send a rescue team."
Glaz:"We're down too many people. With the expanded quarantine zone, our guys are stretched thin."
My phone buzzed. I turned it on, and I felt relieved.
"Six just sent back up."
Glaz:"Who?"
"Monika, Siu, and Ela."
Glaz:"Interesting. I thought she would have sent Shuhrat."
"You think women can't handle themselves?"
Glaz:"I'm saying you need firepower. Only one of those ladies carry a LMG."
I nodded in understanding.
Phoenix:"I can help."
I looked back at him.
Phoenix:"Doc is busy with the sick. Tachanka, Kapkan, and Glaz are busy with patrol. You'll need all the help you can get."
Glaz:"The kid is right."
I bit my lip in thought. Then I reluctantly agreed.
"Fine, but I'm watching you."
Phoenix nodded.
Phoenix:"Yes mam."
"Good. Go gear up, and we'll meet my teammates."
Phoenix didn't move.
"Why are you not going?"
Phoenix:"I may have lost my weapons back at the hospital."
I mentally face-palmed.
"L-Let's get you some new gear."
Timeskip brought to you by chibi (Y/n) saving the princess...
(IQ POV):
The helicopter landed on the helipad. Ying, Ela, and I hopped out. I slung my rifle over my back and began walking to the command tent.
Ela:"Man. It's chaos here."
Ying:"Eliza really didn't lie about this being serious."
Around us were sick people, soldiers, and metal fencing. A whole city fallen apart by a new disease that could end up spreading. I shiver at the thought and approached the tent.
"Let's hope we can stop this before it escalates."
My teammates nodded, and we entered the command tent. There I saw Ash work busily.
"Hey Eliza."
She looked up from her work and smiled a little. Then we walked over, and we lightly hugged.
Ash:"Nice to see you all."
She hugged Ela and Siu.
Ela/Siu/me:"You too."
She let go and looked grimly at us.
Ash:"We have a big problem."
"What happened?"
She walked over to her laptop and pressed a few keys. Then the projector displayed a location on a map.
Ash:"Jordan and his team are trapped."
Ela:"Who's on his team?"
Ash:"Lion, Finka, Buck, and Smoke."
Ying:"All five?!"
Ash nodded.
Ash:"They were heading back after destroying a nest of infected, but they got overrun."
"So what do we do?"
Ash:"We're going to the a rescue team."
Ela:"I don't mean to be rude and all, but we'll need more firepower. Ying can only do so much."
"The best I could do is cover for everyone. My Spectre isn't that useful here."
Ash:"That's why he'll be accompanying us."
She gestured behind us. We all turned around to see a soldier dressed in black and heavily armed.
I do not own these images.
I walked up to him and held out my hand.
"Hi. I'm IQ, but please call me Monika."
He shook my hand.
Phoenix:"Kyle."
I nodded, but his name sounded familiar. Then Ela and Ying shook his hand.
Ela:"Ela."
Ying:"Siu."
Phoenix nodded silently.
"Don't talk much?"
He shook his head.
Ash:"Yeah. He's kinda like that."
I stared at Phoenix in deep thought. He gave off a vibe like (Y/n) did. I decided to ask Ash later.
"By the way, where's Marius? I would like to check on him."
Ash:"Kyle can lead you to him. Just meet us at the helipad."
I nodded, and Phoenix led me out of the tent. We walked in silence for a bit.
"So. Where are you from?"
Phoenix glanced over his shoulder.
Phoenix:"SAS."
I nodded.
"I was just wondering because my boss didn't mention about you."
He didn't respond, but we arrived to a tent.
Phoenix:"Jager is inside. I'll wait out here."
I nodded and entered.
"Marius?"
I called out.
Jager:"Hey."
He weakly replied. I walked in and saw him lying on a stretcher. He tried to sit up, but I stopped him.
"Rest. I'm just visiting."
Jager:"Okay. What are you doing here? Not that I mind."
"Six said that you guys needed help here."
He let out a sigh.
Jager:"If I hadn't crashed, then you wouldn't have to come."
I shook my head.
"I'm sure you could't have expected it."
He shrugged. Then he looked at me.
Jager:"How are you holding up?"
"What do you mean?"
Jager:"You know, (Y/n)."
I looked away sadly.
"I don't know. I guess I miss him."
Jager:"Why? You barely knew him."
"But he's done so much for me. Makes me regret not at least knowing him."
Jager:"At least you tried. Others did not."
I nodded.
"Well, I was just checking on you. Phoenix is waiting outside."
Jager:"You've met Phoenix?"
I nodded.
Jager:"Notice anything about him?"
"No?"
Jager:"His vibe. It's almost exactly like (Y/n)."
"How?"
He explained how Phoenix was quiet and mysterious. Then he supposedly sacrificed himself to save Ash. His amazing combat skills, and how he survived on his own in the midst of infected. I was surprised to hear this.
"He does sound a lot like (Y/n)."
Jager:"Yeah. Maybe you should talk to him. Before..."
"Before what?"
He lightly nudged me.
Jager:"Eliza and Kyle get together. You know how Phoenixes and Ash go together."
I blushed a little at his comment.
"Stop messing around. I barely even know the guy."
Jager:"Just saying. You seem to like people similar to (Y/n). You even almost quit your job."
I shook my head and stood up.
"You hit your head too hard."
He chuckled.
Jager:"Be safe."
I nodded and left the tent. Phoenix was nowhere to be seen. I looked around, but couldn't find him.
'Where did he-'
I felt someone tap on my shoulder. I turned around to see Phoenix holding my rifle.
Phoenix:"Went to get this for you."
I received the rifle.
"Thank you."
He nodded.
Phoenix:"Let's get going."
"Alright."
We headed for the helipad.
Timeskip brought to you by chibi (Y/n) flaming on...
Operation: Outbreak
Mission 2:
Location: Truth or Consequences, New Mexico
Objective: Rescue Thermite, Lion, Finka, Buck, and Smoke
Secondary Objective: Take down the nest
Team Leader: Ash
Operators: IQ, Ela, Ying
Back-up: Phoenix
Mission Status: active
(Y/n) POV:
Back-up. Ash really did mean that she was watching out for me. This is odd to have someone worry so much about me. I quickly snapped out of my thoughts when the truck hopped a little. Even though we met on the helipad, there were no helicopters. Lack of pilots, and the helicopters busy transporting the sick. Suddenly, the truck jerked quite a bit.
Ash:"Ying. You sure you're okay to drive?"
Ying:"I-I'm fine."
I remembered about her car accident. Then I looked over at Ela. She was inspecting my father's SIG P226. My other valuable. Then she pulled out her notebook and opened it. My eyes perked up in interest. There was a picture of me surrounded in flames in a blizzard. Ela then began to draw the pistol in my picture's hand. However, she didn't get to finish because we came to a stop.
Ash:"This is as far as we'll go. Too many hostiles in the area."
IQ:"Good thing I'm wearing my running shoes."
Ela:"You always wear them."
IQ:"Not complaining."
Ela shook her head and stepped out of the truck. I stepped out and went to the trunk. It opened to reveal my new gadget.
IQ:"Did you make that?"
I looked up to see IQ.
"Yes."
IQ:"What makes you want to make this?"
"Past experiences around here."
IQ:"The hospital?"
I nodded silently. She continued to stare at me in deep thought. Like she was comparing me to something. Then Ash called out.
Ash:"We're heading through the neighborhood. Watch out for infected. Especially the rooters."
Ela:"What makes those special?"
Ash:"They like to make random spikes that impale you to death. Plus they're really quick."
IQ:"Anything else we should know?"
Ash:"There's the grunts and smashers. Those big dudes can kill you with one hit."
Everyone nodded a little nervously. I picked up the flamethrower and shut the trunk.
Ash:"Kyle. You'll go with IQ and Ela. I'll go with Ying."
IQ:"Should we really split up?"
Ying:"If we want to find the others quickly. Sundown is coming soon."
I glanced up to the sky. Only half an hour to nightfall. The infected will be deadlier.
Ela:"Okay then. I'll take point."
I shook my head and held up my flamethrower.
Ela:"Or Phoenix can."
Everyone nodded in agreement.
Ash:"Alright. Make sure to radio in if you find anything. Routine check ins as well."
Everyone:"Copy."
Ash walked over to me. She placed her hand on my arm.
Ash:"Be careful okay?"
She asked me in a worried tone. Her eyes filled with fear of my safety. I grasped her hand lightly.
"Don't worry. You be careful."
Ash blushed and nodded. We then split ways. I walked in front with my flamethrower. The suburb was eerily quiet. Much like the hospital.
Ela:"I spotted something running between the houses."
She called out, and I began to steer us to one of the houses.
IQ:"Where are we going?"
I didn't reply and checked the door to a house. It was locked. I then kicked it open and went in.
IQ:"Is something-"
I cut her off by pulling the two ladies inside. After letting them go, I shut the door.
Ela:"Hey, what's the deal?"
I didn't reply immediately and checked through the blinds.
"Rooters. A ton of them."
Ela:"I only spotted one though."
"That was just the scout for more."
I glanced around and pressed the comm in my ear.
"This is Phoenix. Do you copy, Ash?"
Ash:"I copy. What's going on?"
She spoke through my comm.
"Many rooters heading your way. Stay alert or head inside."
Suddenly, gunfire was heard outside and through my comm.
Ying:"Contact!"
Ash:"Shit! We're pinned down!"
"On my way."
I rushed to the door of the house and opened the door. Before I left, I turned to my teammates.
"Keep searching for Thermite and his team. I'll go help Ash and Ying."
IQ:"You can't go alone!"
"I've been doing it all my life."
I sprinted out of the house towards Ash's direction. After running towards the sound of gunfire, the screeches of the infected began to arise. I rounded the corner to see Ash and Ying atop a truck. Ying mowed down the crowed of monsters, while Ash took care of the closer ones. I turned on the torch to my flamethrower. It's gas gauge began to fill up. When the needle went to the green, I pulled the trigger. A funnel of flames shot out of my weapon and onto the infected. The grunts began to burn to death. Ash looked over and smiled before returning to killing.
Ying:"Reloading!"
Ying began to reload, but I saw a breacher rushing towards the women. Ash noticed this as well. She turned and put a bullet into its skull. However, it was too close and exploded. This knocked the two off of the truck. I quickly incinerated the remaining grunts and rushed over to aid the ladies. I helped Ash up, and then Ying afterwards.
Ash:"Thanks, Kyle."
Ying:"Thank you."
I nodded and reloaded my heavy weaponry. Suddenly, an unpleasant roar filled the air. I looked up to see the pack of rooters scurrying towards the three of us.
Ash:"Shit. We can't fight them all."
Ying:"We could run. The location is up ahead. No doubt it's fortified."
"Go. I'll cover you."
Ash:"No. I'm not leaving you alone."
She looked at me seriously.
"Then advance while covering any that get close, but I need to get back to Ela and IQ."
Ash bit her lip in uncertainty.
Ash:"Fine, but come back alive."
I gave her a thumbs up before marching towards my foes. The footsteps of Ash and Ying grew fainter, as I advanced. Occasional gunfire from behind me hit the rooters. Once in range, I unleashed hell onto the creatures. I melted several with flames before they began to surround me.
'Big mistake.'
I turned the knob for full range. Then I began to spin around, while holding down the trigger. A massive vortex of orange fire surrounded myself and my enemies. Many tried to scramble away, but ended up burnt to a crisp. Eventually, all hostiles were eliminated. The flames dissipated, and I slung the flamethrower over my back. Everything around me began to darken again after the bright fire. I looked around to inspect my surroundings. Everything looked clear. Then I saw a injured rooter crawling away. I walked over and pulled out my pistol. It turned its head to scream at me, but I put two bullets through its mouth. My comm began to beep.
Ash:"Kyle, you alright?"
"I'm good. I'm heading back to Ela and Monika."
Ash:"Got it. The safe house is nearby. Remember Smoke's password?"
"If he told me, he'd have to kill me."
Ash:"Good. Because I would hate to see you die."
"Likewise."
Ash:"O-Okay. Eliza out."
She stuttered over the comms before signing out. I holster my pistol and drew my knife. Then I ran in the direction my other teammates were.
A few minutes before...
(Ela POV):
I watched Phoenix leave me with IQ. IQ watched in disbelief.
IQ:"Who does he think he is?!"
"I don't know, but we'll have to trust his word."
IQ shook her head before lifted her rifle.
IQ:"Fine. Let's go find Jordan and get out of here."
I nodded, and the two of us set off again. We walked through the suburb area. The gunfire grew fainter, as we walked towards the last known location of our allies.
IQ:"I hope they're okay."
I silently nodded. Then some growling was heard to the right. It was coming from behind a large truck. I gestured over to the sound. IQ signaled back that she was going to check it. I aimed my weapon ready. IQ slowly crept towards the truck. She then rounded around the corner and let out a sigh of relief.
IQ:"Clear."
I lowered a weapon slightly, but looked up. There was a grunt preparing to pounce on IQ.
"Contact above!"
We lifted our rifles and fired at the infected. It screeched in pain before falling to the ground dead. However, cries of more infected filled the street. I began to get nervous, as the infected appeared one-by-one. In seconds, nearly a hundred infected grunts and breachers surrounded us.
IQ:"I'll take the left."
"That leaves me with right."
We opened fire on the creatures. I specifically aimed for the breachers because they exploded to kill the grunts. My magazine emptied, and I replaced it with a fresh one. However, with all of these enemies, I don't think my ammo supply will last.
"I've got two clips left."
IQ:"One."
This was not good. Each infected we killed, another replaced it. I fired a shot into each head. One. Two. Three. Three heads exploded, and my gun clicked empty. I went to reload, but one grunt sprinted towards me.
'Shit!'
I rolled out of the way and drew my pistol. Lying on my side, I popped three shots into it's skull. It dropped dead, but I felt something sharp pierce my shoulder.
"Ahh!"
IQ turned to look at me with a face of fear.
IQ:"Ela!"
She shot behind me, and I felt the sharp clamp release. I glanced to see that I was bitten, and now my shoulder was bleeding badly. My gritted in pain. I applied pressure to the wound, but enemies still kept coming. IQ backed-up towards me.
IQ:"Come on! We need to move!"
I willed myself up and picked up my rifle. Then the two of us began sprinting away. I would spray randomly to ward away the enemies, while IQ did her best to cover for the both of us. Suddenly, a rooter sprouted from the ground ahead of us. It roared in fury, as we approached it. IQ tried to shoot it, but it formed spikes to block the shots. Then her rifle clicked empty.
IQ:"I'm out!"
She pulled out her pistol and tried to fire. However, she tripped on something.
"IQ!"
I looked to see another rooter grabbing onto her leg. She tried to kick it away, but it had a death grip. I pulled out my pistol and shot it in the head. After emptying my magazine, it finally dropped dead. IQ immediately turned around to shoot the one ahead of us, but her gun was knocked away. I spun around to be met with a spike flying towards me. My eye's closed, expecting death. However, only screeching of pain filled the air. I opened one eye to see Phoenix stabbing his knife through the rooter.
IQ:"Phoenix!"
He dropped the dead body and lifted his flamethrower.
Phoenix:"Stay behind me."
He advanced past us towards the horde of infected. Phoenix pulled the trigger and an inferno shot out of his weapon. A large semicircle of death appeared in front of him. The infected caught in the flames burned to a crisp, while the others began to retreat, but Phoenix didn't let up. He chased after them and incinerated them. After slaughtering the horde, the flames went out. He dropped the empty has tanks and slung the gadget over his back. Then he walked back towards IQ and I.
Phoenix:"Follow me."
He walked past the two of us. IQ and I shared glances before following. He led us to a barricaded house. Phoenix walked up to the door and knocked. A familiar voice answered.
Smoke:"What's in the canister?"
Phoenix:"If you told me, you'd have to kill me."
The door quickly opened to reveal Smoke.
Smoke:"Boy am I glad to see you, greenie."
He then looked over to IQ and I.
Smoke:"I see you've brought two ladies home with ya. Good catch."
I shook my head, but IQ blushed red. Then Ash's voice rang out from inside the house.
Ash:"Hurry up and come in! Those rooters will be back any minute!"
Smoke:"Alright. In you go."
He stepped aside, and the three of us entered. I entered to see Ash and Thermite studying maps in the kitchen. Lion was lying on the couch, while Finka stood watch at the windows. Ying was refilling her drum mag, and Buck was leaning at a corner. Ash looked up from the table.
Ash:"Glad to see you three alive."
I nodded and felt someone tap my arm. It was Phoenix.
Phoenix:"Let me help you."
I nodded, and he led me to another room. However, Finka stopped us.
Finka:"Shouldn't I do this?"
"It's fine. If Phoenix tries anything, I'll feed him to the grunts."
Finka nodded in approval before returning to her post.
Smoke:"Don't worry. I'm sure greenie here has his eyes on another prize."
He tilted his head towards Ash.
"Maybe."
I continued to the other room with Phoenix. Then I removed my vest and shirt. My shoulder was now exposed, but I still had an undershirt. Phoenix began to operate on my shoulder.
Phoenix:"Bite this."
He handed me a wrapped towel. I bit onto the towel, and he pour disinfectant on the wound. I winced a little from the pain. After a minute, he finished bandaging up my wounds.
Phoenix:"All done."
I reclothed myself and looked at him.
"Thanks."
He nodded silently. Then the two of us walked back into the main room.
Thermite:"I'm telling you. There's no way out through here."
Ash:"We don't have a choice. Too many infected at the other way."
Thermite:"We have enough explosives though."
Ash:"But we can't get close enough without alerting the entire horde."
Thermite let out a frustrated sigh. Lion chuckled.
Lion:"Relax Thermite. Just blame our shitty rescue team."
IQ glared at Lion, while Ash shook her head.
Smoke:"I've had to deal with this wanker, mate."
He addressed this to Phoenix. Lion sat up.
Lion:"Don't think it's any better for me. I've had to say your stupid password."
Smoke:"It's the only way to tell that you ain't infected."
Finka:"He's not wrong. The disease causes rapid brain decay."
Lion:"The British have brain decay already."
Smoke:"What's your bloody problem with us?"
Lion:"You British think you're all that."
Smoke:"Says the Frenchie who wanted their child dead."
Lion:"What?!"
Smoke:"I read ya file. Baby-killer."
Lion stood up and stormed over to Smoke. Finka tried to stop him, but he pushed her out of the way. Then Phoenix stood in between the two. Lion stared angrily at Phoenix.
Lion:"Move."
Phoenix remained still. Lion tried to grab Phoenix, but Phoenix twisted his arm behind his back, and held a knife to Lion's throat.
Phoenix:"Do you give?"
Ash:"Kyle! Back off."
Phoenix let Lion go, and Lion stumbled away.
Lion:"Submitting to a woman. Pathetic."
IQ:"You have a problem? You follow Six's orders."
Lion scoffed at Phoenix.
Lion:"That's different. Phoenix here has no backbone."
Lion was really getting on my nerves.
Thermite:"That's enough Oliver!"
Lion growled and walked away. Not before bumping into my injured shoulder. I stumbled a little due to the pain. Then Phoenix began to storm over. I tried to stop Phoenix, but it was too late. He kicked Lion behind the knee. Then he shoved Lion's head into the wall before throwing him onto the ground.
Lion:"Bastard!"
Lion got back up with a bloodied face and jumped at Phoenix. However, Phoenix just dodged Lion and tripped him. Lion stumbled onto the floor, and Ash rushed over.
Ash:"I said stop! Before I have both of you court-martial."
Lion didn't listen. This time he pulled out his pistol.
Lion:"I don't care. I was just defending myself from this bastard."
Buck:"Hey, let's just calm down."
Lion:"Shut up, Canadian."
I slowly reached for my pistol, but Phoenix held my hand. I looked up and saw him shake his head.
Ash:"Stand down, Lion. That's an order."
She ordered sternly, but worry filled her voice. Luckily, Lion lowered his gun and glared at Phoenix.
Lion:"Watch your back out there. Because I'm not going to."
He huffed and left the room. Everyone looked visibly relieved. Phoenix then turned to me.
Phoenix:"Are you alright?"
I nodded.
"I'm fine. You didn't have to do that."
He shook his head.
Phoenix:"No one hurts my teammates."
Smoke:"I'm kinda jealous greenie. Wished I was the one to hit that French dick."
Ash:"Shut it, James. And you."
She stood in front of Phoenix.
Ash:"That was out of line."
Phoenix:"If he did it to you, I would do the same."
She blushed a little.
Ash:"T-That's not the point. You can't just beat down others because of a shove."
Finka:"It's fine, Eliza. Oliver completely deserved it."
Ash shook her head.
Ash:"Just don't do it again. Okay?"
Phoenix put his hand on the side of her arm.
Phoenix:"I'll try."
She blushed red, and he let go and walked into another room. Curious to where Phoenix went, I followed. He entered an office room. Then Phoenix set down his flamethrower and walked over to the table. There lied his rifle and pistols. He began to load bullets into magazines and check his weaponry. I lightly knocked on the doorway.
"Hey."
He glanced over at me before returning to his guns. I walked over and stood by him. Then I watched him expertly disassemble and reassemble his rifle. After a few minutes, he finished assembling his gun and placed his hands on the table.
Phoenix:"You need something?"
"I just wanted to thank you for saving IQ and I."
Phoenix:"It was no problem."
I let out a sigh and leaned on the table. Then I stared in curiosity.
"Do you ever take off your helmet?"
He looked at me.
Phoenix:"I don't like showing others my face."
"You showed Eliza, I presume."
He nodded.
"Why so?"
Phoenix:"She already saw my face, while I wasn't awake."
I nodded.
"Do you mind if I see your face?"
Phoenix:"Why so?"
I rubbed my arm a little nervously.
"I'm into art. I tend to draw many things that happen to me or interesting people."
Phoenix:"What makes me so interesting?"
I thought about it for a second.
"For starters, you saved my life. Next you beat up Oliver just for bumping into me."
Phoenix shrugged.
"Most importantly, you remind me of someone."
Phoenix:"Let me guess. (Y/n)."
My eyes widened in surprise.
"H-How did you know?"
Phoenix:"Ash told me about him. How I was very similar to him. Plus what happened to him."
I nodded sadly.
Phoenix:"Plus I noticed you drawing someone and a pistol. Was that his?"
I pulled out (Y/n)'s P226.
"Yeah. Last time I saw him, he gave me this gun."
I looked at Phoenix.
"You knew him, right?"
Phoenix nodded.
Phoenix:"Been on a mission with him."
I was surprised.
"Really? Which one?"
He then told me the same thing he told Ash. A SAS mission with (Y/n) as a butler. However, something didn't add up. I read (Y/n)'s file a lot. Something didn't add up.
"How old are you?"
Phoenix:"Nearing thirty."
My thought for a second. (y/n) was really young during this mission. Plus Thatcher was there. No way Phoenix could have been there. Unless...
"Phoenix. May I see your face?"
Phoenix unlatched his helmet to reveal his face. He had (h/l) hair, (s/c) skin, and (e/c) eyes. Okay, things were starting to get weird.
"What's your last name, Kyle?"
Phoenix:"Smite."
My blood went cold. I stepped back a bit. My eyes never left his face. Realization hit harder than my concussion mines. He was alive.
"(Y-Y/n)?"
He seemed to hesitate before answering. (Y/n) nodded confirming my answer. I covered my mouth in shock, and some fears of joy fell out of my eyes. I didn't say anything, but embraced him tightly. He stiffened at the contact and awkwardly patted my back.
"I can't believe this."
I let go and stared into his eyes.
"How?"
(Y/n):"My jacket protected me from the fire. I decided to operate in the shadows, but that didn't work out."
I nodded.
"Why fake your death?"
(Y/n):"It's better that way."
I looked at him shocked.
"How? We're a team."
He shook his head.
(Y/n):"I'm a walking weapon. That's all I've ever done, and all I'll ever do. It's better for me to go alone."
"But you don't have to be alone anymore. Team Rainbow is there for you."
(Y/n):"You have your family. Mine is dead."
I sighed sadly.
"Mine is too. All I have is Zofia, but..."
I looked up at (Y/n) sternly.
"I have found a new family. One at Team Rainbow. Here we are all one family. One who fight to protect others. Like you."
He looked away.
(Y/n):"People I've tried to protect always end up dead."
I gently pulled his cheek to face me.
"I've felt the same way once. When I was in Iraq, I lost many comrades. The memories of them still haunt me. Then my father passed away. This motivated me to keep moving forward. To protect others."
I stared into (Y/n)'s eyes determined.
"You should not let the deaths in the past stop you. They died, so you could live to save others."
(Y/n):"But how many lives have I taken more than saved?"
"Like Doc said, Sometimes to save a life, you mist take one."
He still remained unmoved.
(Y/n):"Still doesn't excuse the fact that others die around me."
"I didn't die. If weren't around, I would have died."
He remained silent. I gently touched his arm.
"Please. We care about you. Eliza, Monika, Grace, me. Everyone was saddened to see you go. The thing's you've been through, alone."
(Y/n):"That's why I need to remain alone. No one should experience this."
"Even you."
He raised an eyebrow in surprise.
"No one should. Not even you."
(Y/n):"Why do you even care?"
"Because I see someone who has been through a lot and just needs a person to care. I didn't go through my father's death alone. I had met Meghan(Valyrie) in Baghdad."
(Y/n):"So you're going to help me through what?"
"Let's start with your parents."
He flinched.
(Y/n):"M-My parents?"
I nodded.
"I still remembered what you said to Syrius before you ended him."
I held out his P226.
"You valued this and the Jericho more than your life. It suggests that it belong to your parents. This one your father, and the other is your mother's."
I set down the gun on the table. A tear rolled down his cheek. He gently touched the weapon.
"I know what it feels like to lose your parent. It tears away a piece of you. For you it's worse."
(Y/n) closed his eyes.
"Let me help you. You don't have to bear this pain alone anymore, (Y/n)."
Tears streamed steadily down his face.
(Y/n):"I miss them..."
He silently whispered. I embraced him. I could feel this trembles from silently crying.
"It's okay, (Y/n)."
I murmured soothing words to comfort him. After a few minutes, he stopped crying and sniffled.
(Y/n):"Thank you..."
I let go and looked at him.
"Your welcome. Remember, I will always be here for you, okay?"
He nodded silently. I hugged him once more, and this time he hugged back. A smile formed on my face. This wasn't a lover's hug, but a sisterly one. I felt a new responsibility for (Y/n). To go through so much at his young age is horrible.
'I'll help fix him. Rebuild what broke him all those years.'
(Y/n):"How will I tell the others?"
I looked up at him.
(Y/n):"Gustave knows already and will tell if anyone asks him."
I thought about it for a second.
"I'll do the same as Gustave. However, I think you should be the one to tell everyone."
He nodded.
(Y/n):"Okay."
We continued to hug, until I heard someone knock on the door. I let go to see IQ standing at the doorway.
IQ:"Hey, Ela. Was I interrupting something?"
"Uh no. We're just about done."
IQ:"Okay. I just wanted to speak to Kyle if you don't mind."
I shook my head. He picked up his father's pistol and held it out for me. I shook my head.
"It belongs to you. Keep it. Honor your father."
I whispered to (Y/n). He nodded and put away the weapon. I began to leave, but (Y/n) called out to me again.
(Y/n):"Ela?"
I looked back.
(Y/n):"Thank you."
"No problem."
I saw relief in his eyes. Most likely a emotion that was devoid of him. It brought a small smile to my face to see him back and better. It was like I was an older sister.
A few minutes before...
(IQ POV):
I stood in the corner of the main room by myself. Phoenix had just left, and Ela followed after him. I was curious to what Ela was doing, but I let them have their privacy. Several minutes passed by of me doing nothing. Ash and Thermite were still planning an escape route. Finka then walked over to me.
Finka:"How are you doing, Monika?"
"I'm fine. How's your body holding up?"
Finka has experienced physical problems with her muscles. The nano-bots in here body keep her in peak physical condition. However, we are unsure to how long it lasts.
Finka:"Not to good. It's one of the main reasons to why you're here."
I shook my head.
"Don't blame yourself."
Finka:"Well it's not only my fault. Oliver and Mark still have their spats."
I let out a frustrated sigh.
"When will he and the SAS get it together?"
Finka:"Probably never."
I leaned back and looked up.
Finka:"You still miss (Y/n)?"
I looked at Finka.
"What makes you say that?"
She gestured to my hand. I looked down and saw myself fiddling with (Y/n)'s dog tags subconsciously.
Finka:"You've been messing with those the whole time here."
"Sorry."
Finka:"It's no problem. I'm just worried about you."
I rubbed my eyes.
"It's just that he didn't have to die. If anything, (Y/n) deserves a chance to live the most."
Finka:"Why so?"
"He risked his life to save me much more."
Finka nodded.
Finka:"Did you like this man?"
I blushed slightly.
"N-No."
Finka raised an eyebrow.
"M-Maybe a little."
Finka chuckled softly.
Finka:"Ahh. Monika Weiss finally found someone that interested her."
"Sure, but I can't act on that know."
I looked down sadly. Finka placed her hand on my shoulder.
Finka:"There will always be someone out there. You may just not see it?"
"Who then?"
She glanced in the direction Phoenix and Ela went.
Finka:"That new Phoenix guy seems like a person you would like."
"Really?"
She nodded.
Finka:"He saved Eliza's life, and fought through hordes of infected on his own. While injured."
My eyes widened.
"He's that good?! I thought he was a private!"
Finka shrugged.
Finka:"There's more to than what meets the eye, I suppose."
She then smirked at me.
Finka:"You better act quickly. Otherwise your competitors will take Phoenix from you."
I stood up straight a little annoyed.
"Okay. First, Marius says the same thing. Now you too. Who says I like Kyle, and who would be my competition?"
Finka nodded her head towards Ash.
Finka:"The last time I saw her, she was sleeping next to Phoenix's bedside. Plus she was really torn up when she thought Phoenix died."
I was shocked.
"You're telling me Eliza did that?"
She nodded.
Finka:"Surprising isn't it?"
"Yeah."
I looked over at Ash. She was still planning a strategy. This was when I realized Ash might like Kyle. She blushed at his contact and was worried about him quite a bit.
'I wonder what made her like him?'
"Thanks for checking on me Finka."
Finka:"No problem. Remember what I said."
I shook my head.
"Sure. I'll look into it."
I walked towards the room Phoenix went into. His and Ela's conversation should be over. I wanted to thank him for saving me. Unlike (Y/n), he might actually acknowledge my compliment. I approached the room and stepped through the doorway. However, my feet came to a stop, when I saw the two hugging. Thoughts from earlier ran through my mind.
'Was this the other competitor that Finka meant? The two just met.'
I gently knocked on the doorway. The two let go. Ela turned to face me, while Phoenix looked away.
Ela:"Oh. Hey, Monika."
"Hey, Ela. Was I interrupting something?"
She glanced at Phoenix. He shook his head for some reason.
Ela:"No. I was just thanking Kyle for saving me."
I nodded a bit skeptically.
"Okay. I just wanted to speak to Kyle if you don't mind."
Ela shook her head no. Kyle tried to hand her (Y/n)'s gun, but she gave it to him. She whispered something to to him, which made me confused. He nodded silently. Ela then walk past me and left the room not before Phoenix thanking her for something. I looked over at Phoenix. Phoenix turned away belfre I could get a good look at his face. He had (h/c) hair and (s/c) skin. Curious to what he looked like under his mask, I walked over.
"Hey, Kyle."
He looked over his shoulder, and I blushed. I now saw why Ash must have like him. His face was handsome and his (e/c) eyes mesmerized me. Suddenly, Phoenix was in front of me looking slightly worried.
Phoenix:"Are you okay?"
I was so captivated that I didn't notice him in front of me at first.
"Oh! Umm-Sorry. I'm fine."
Phoenix:"Are you sure? You're looking a little red."
Then he gently led me to a chair to sit down. When I sat down he began to touch my forehead. I blushed red.
"W-What are you doing?"
Phoenix:"Checking if you have a fever. This disease can hit you anytime."
Then he removed his hand and walked over to the door. He closed it and looked away.
Phoenix:"Could you please remove your hoodie and shirt."
"W-WHAT?!"
I blushed red and looked at him in shock.
Phoenix:"It's to check any dark spots on your back. It's a symptom."
I blushed even more.
"O-Okay, but don't peek."
He nodded. I turned around and removed my jacket and shirt. Leaving me only in my bra.
"Y-You can check now."
I heard him walk over and stand behind me. He turned on a flashlight and began inspecting my back. The whole time, my face remained red. I can't believe I was exposing myself to him. However, if Ela trusted him. I think it was okay.
Phoenix:"I'm about to closely inspect your back. Stop me whenever you feel uncomfortable."
"O-Okay."
Suddenly, I felt his fingers touch my back. Luckily, his fingers were warm, but I still got goosebumps from his touch. Then he traced his fingers down, and a giggle escaped my mouth. I blushed in embarrassment.
"S-Sorry. I'm a little ticklish."
Phoenix:"It's okay."
He let go and turned off his flashlight.
Phoenix:"You seem to be alright. I'll have Doc do a final check later."
I nodded and turned to face him. He then looked away.
"Is something wrong?"
Phoenix:"I'll wait until you are finished with dressing."
I looked down and covered myself immediately. All the blood in my body rushed to my face. I fumbled to put my shirt and hoodie on. While struggling to get dressed, Phoenix said something.
Phoenix:"I'm sorry for accidentally looking."
"N-No. It was my fault."
I tucked into my hoodie and stood up still red. Then I nervously tapped Phoenix in the shoulder. He turned to face me with his eyes closed.
"Y-You can open your eyes."
He opened them and stared into mines. We held eye contact for a minute or two, before I turned away shyly.
"Thanks."
Phoenix:"No problem. I was just worried for your health."
A small smile formed on my lips. He really reminded me of (Y/n).
Phoenix:"What is it that you wanted to see me for?"
"Oh. I just wanted to say thanks for helping me back out there."
Phoenix:"Like I said, no problem. I'll always look after you."
I smiled at him.
"Then I hope that I can return the favor."
He nodded, and the two us us walked over to the door. We reached for it at the same time, and my hand touched his. I felt a spark and quickly pulled my hand back.
"S-Sorry."
I blushed a little.
Phoenix:"It's no problem."
He opened the door, and I exited first. I walked down the hall, but glanced back at Phoenix. Then I held up my hand and looked at it. The feeling earlier was most likely static energy. However, part of me hoped it meant more.
(Y/n) POV:
'I wonder why Monika and Eliza were blushing so much?'
I was sure that they weren't sick. Ash was acting strangely during our meal, and IQ became flustered while I examined her. It's time like these I wished that my mother was around to give me knowledge on women. Maybe I'll ask the two ladies on this matter. They trusted me, and I'm beginning to trust them. IQ and I stepped into the main room. Everyone was just resting at this point. Smoke then walked up to me.
Smoke:"Enjoy your private time with the ladies, greenie?"
I just stared at him silently, while IQ walked away blushing. Smoke chuckled.
Smoke:"I must say that I'm a little jealous."
Buck:"Leave the poor kid alone, James. He's clueless."
That was correct. I had no idea what Smoke was trying to say to me. Smoke shook his head in disappointment.
Smoke:"Better figure it out greenie. Women don't like waiting."
He then walked away. Ash walked over to me.
Ash:"Hey, Kyle."
I waved.
Ash:"Looks like we'll be staying here for the night. There's too many infected outside for us to sneak through."
I nodded.
"Okay."
She then looked a little sad.
Ash:"Sorry that we couldn't get that dinner tonight."
"It's no problem. We can have another one later."
Ash:"I'll hold you to that. In the mean time, what are you doing?"
I looked in the direction of the unguarded side of the house.
"I'll go keep watch."
She shook her head.
Ash:"You've saved my butt today. Rest."
"I'm fine."
Ash:"Anything I say won't change your mind?"
"Sorry."
Ash then blushed and looked away.
Ash:"I-If you want. I could help keep watch over you-I mean over the house."
"Sure."
I then walked to my post and sat down. Ash sat beside me, while we stared outside the window. We talked for a bit, but I mostly listened. Several hours passed, and I felt a weight on my shoulder. I glanced to see Ash had fallen asleep on my shoulder. All that planning must have worn her out. So I picked her up gently and carried her to where the ladies were sleeping. There I found IQ sleeping, while sitting up. In her hands was a screwdriver, and on her wrist was her scanner with my dog tags.
'I wonder why she kept those. Guess it's like Ela and Eliza.'
I gently set Ash down at a wall next to IQ. She leaned on the wall, while sleeping. However, IQ began to fall backwards. I quickly caught her gently. A sigh of relief escaped my mouth. It was short lived, when she grabbed onto me.
IQ:"Pillow..."
She mumbled in her sleep, while hugging me. It was pretty cute, but now I was stuck in between the two ladies. To add on top of that, Ash leaned onto my chest.
Ash:"Must rush to his arms..."
Ash hummed in comfort.
'Crap.'
I was not going anywhere tonight. So I decided just to sit and watch over the two. My eyes glanced at the two ladies and it brought back old memories.
Dad:"Remember son, your comrades before you."
His voice rang inside of my head faintly. I gripped my father's P226.
'I remember dad. I promise this time...'
I closed my eyes.
'I won't fail.'
A/n: Thank you all for reading and supporting this book. Sorry this chapter didn't have too much action. I promise the next will have more.
