CHAPTER ELEVEN
Cheryl gazed at her phone screen for the umpteenth time and felt an urge to smash it on the ground. How dare this low chap threaten her? It wasn't hard for her to ignore but she was going to end this once and for all. She looked down again at the location and saw it was a coffee shop down town, it wasn't the usual classy ones she had visited but a regular one people crowded.
"Ma'am we are here" the driver announced stepping on the brake.
"You can go home Peter, I don't know how long I'll be here" she spoke up from the backseat grabbing her handbag.
"But I was instructed -"
"Don't worry dear, you've been working throughout the week so consider this as a treat. Go ahead and have a drink with your friends, I'll take a taxi" she patted his head and waved at him before turning to enter the shop.
The bell clinked as she pushed the door ajar, scanning the shop, she spotted her guest seated at the extreme end of the shop. It was indeed a hidden spot and a good place to have a secretive conversation; better for her.
"Its nice to see you again after so many years. Thanks for gracing my invitation" the blonde lady said as Cheryl approached the table and took her seat.
"No need for formalities" she answered taking off her sunglasses and placing it in her bag. "What the hell is this about Eline?".
"I meant no harm, there was no way I could contact you or bring you to see me so I added that information. Do you care for coffee?" She replied and signalled to the waiter.
Cheryl looked at her with a neutral expression on her face but deep down in her chest was a ball of anger heating up slowly. It didn't feel right to flare up yet.
"What would you like?" The waiter asked approaching their table.
"I would love a cup of black coffee with a lot of cream and shortbreads if there are any available" Cheryl spoke up immediately. Then she recalled she had someone sitting in front of her.
"Ooh!" She exclaimed. "Two cups please, the same for the shortbreads" she quickly added.
Eline studied the lady in front of her and was spellbound by the figure. Right from when she had known her, her figure had been impressive but it was surprising that after all these years had passed, she wasn't showing signs of getting older. Her skin even glowed more than before and didn't appear to be aging, anyone looking at her couldn't determine her age. The waiter soon arrived and placed their orders on the table.
"How did you get my contact?" Cheryl asked looking up from the phone she had been pressing.
"A good friend of mine actually gave it to me. Does it make you sick that I have it?"
"Maybe....maybe not" she chewed on her shortbread and turned her gaze outside the window. That information as Eline had described it was an event from nineteen years of her life.
"So Lisa, how have you -?"
"I no longer go by the name Lisa. My name is Cheryl Baker" she interrupted sharply.
"That's pretty shocking" Eline went on with a suprising expression contouring her face. "What of -?''
"I don't want to hear his name. We got a divorce three years later so I moved out". She snapped.
"That's pretty impressive and a strong act for you to have undertaken so..... How did you cope with all that?". Her words were chosen carefully now as to avoid offending Cheryl. The girl she knew then was now a personality she couldn't afford to offend; she was now a well-known international model and had gone through a transformation over the years she couldn't read through. She wondered how the stress of a divorce must have affected her; it must have been really tough for her.
"It wasn't so hard, my parents were my support all through. After a ghastly accident that claimed their lives, I relocated to New York. Enrolled in a media school and did commercial ads for companies. Right now, I'm into the movie industry".
"Your story is so amazing Cheryl but being single and all, isn't it boring? You need a man by your side".
"You're still the inquisitive Eline I've known from way back" a stifled smile escaped her lips as she peered at Eline, amusement clearly clouding her eyes.
"Of course I need a man and I've got one. I have a boyfriend" she paused and looked at her wristwatch.
"That's enough questioning about my private life. I'm scheduled for a shoot in less than 50 minutes so if there's nothing to discuss, I'll take my leave".
"What of the boy? Have you tried contacting him or the family he lives with?" Eline's intense look got her off balance before she snapped.
"It's none of your business if I do that or not. Thanks for the time and concern you showed but its best if we keep to our own sides of the world and don't interfere with each other's affairs. I'll be leaving now" she retrieved her shades from her bag and put them on.
"Here's the bill for our lunch" she placed some rolls of dollar notes on the table. "And a cheque of $20 thousand dollars" she pushed the paper towards Eline's hand.
"What's that for? I can't accept this" Eline cried out.
"See it as a token for the stress you took to do this. We don't belong to the same class so let's stay off pathways. Consider that this gathering never held and move on with your life, there are things that are meant to be and things you can't change" Cheryl bent and placed a peck on her cheek.
"It was nice meeting up with you. Extend my greetings to the family and have a lovely day". When Eline looked up, she was already out of sight and was nowhere on the streets. She let out a sigh and continued sipping her coffee.
The purpose of the meeting wasn't even achieved but some words that Cheryl had uttered stung deeply like a wasp's sting. She was right when she said they didn't belong to the same class; after all Cheryl was a model and an upcoming actress while she was a family housewife. If only she had been more patient, maybe she would be reconsidering walking out.
Then she remembered the cheque sitting beside her and felt insulted; she didn't need the money but her niece will need it.
