Heart beat
John's eyes shot open. He sucked in a shaky gasp, being cut short abruptly when he couldn't get enough air into his system.
Everything was blurry without his glasses on, his heart was beating so hard in his chest his entire torso was shaking with each pump. He clutched the bedsheets in his fists, trying desperately to breathe in but only getting short gasps.
"John?" Alex asked worriedly from the hospital bed beside him, rubbing his eyes as he woke up.
John tried to scream for help but he only choked and gurgled. Alex shot out of bed and ran to his side, grabbing his face in staring into his eyes with horror.
"John? John! Jesus christ! NURSE!" He yelled as John shook underneath him, tears streaming down his cheeks as he slammed his fists into the bed.
John mouthed his name, kicking his legs as his throat burned. He was starting to feel dizzy. A nurse ran in and quickly bolted to John's side, summoning more staff.
"We need to slow his heart rate!" She yelled.
Another two nurses came running in, one with a trolley and one with a needle.
"Hold him down!" One of the nurses ordered Alex. Alex nodded and grabbed his shoulders, pushing them into the bed.
John looked up at Alex with wide, glossy eyes, shaking his head in fear.
"Sh sh I love you, I love you John," he soothed, still holding him down firmly. John flinched as the needle was stabbed into his arm and only struggled for a little longer before he slowly began to pass out.
Alex let go and stroked a hand through John's hair, looking down at him worriedly as a nurse hooked an oxygen mask over his mouth and nose. Slowly he relaxed into the bed and the nurses stepped back.
"What the hell just happened?"
---
John woke up slowly, squinting his eyes and groaning. His throat was on fire and his chest was throbbing in pain.
"John holy shit!" Alex gasped, launching forward and wrapping his arms around John desperately.
"A-Alex, what happened," he croaked weakly, his voice extremely hoarse.
"You just woke up and you were having a panic attack are you okay did you have a nightmare or something?" Alex spoke quickly, worry laced through his voice.
"Pani- why are we at the hospital?" He croaked in confusion.
"What do you mean? We never left..." Alex muttered, cocking a brow at John with concern.
"No, no I was at Schuyler tower, and I had the pills," John argued weakly, shaking his head gently.
"You never- th-that must've been a dream, what happened? If you don't mind me asking?" Alex spoke carefully, holding John's hand supportively.
"I-" John closed his eyes and inhaled a shaky breath.
"John you don't ha-"
"Tried to kill myself."
Alex froze and stared at him with wide eyes. They sat in silence until Alex slowly leaned down, hugging John tightly without another word.
"You would never, never actually d-do that right?" Alex mumbled from in the embrace, slowly lifting his head to look at John.
"No, no of course not," John lied quickly, remembering how Alex reacted in his dream and getting a little scared.
"Good, because I'd probably have to pull a Romeo and Juliet on you," he laughed quietly before deciding this wasn't a joking matter. "I couldn't live without you John," he whispered, hiding his face in John's chest and letting his rhythmic heartbeat soothe him.
"I love you Alex," he croaked quietly, squeezing his eyes shut.
"I love you too," Alex smiled into his chest. "Hey, I wanna show you something," Alex beamed, sitting up slowly.
"What is it?" John asked curiously, slowly sitting up too.
"Surprise," Alex grinned, grabbing John's glasses off the bedside table and perching them on his nose. John frowned and raised a hand to take them off before Alex stopped him. "They're cute John," he smiled, kissing his forehead as he stood up off the bed.
John sighed and swung his legs over the edge, Alex held John's hands and helped him stand, wrapping an arm around his waist. Alex slowly lead him out of his room and down the hallway, stepping into the elevator.
"Where are we going Alex?" John squinted as Alex selected the top floor.
"What part of surprise don't you understand?" Alex laughed, leaning his head on John's shoulder. John rolled his eyes with a weak laugh and they floated up in silence, arriving at the top floor.
Alex pressed his finger to his lips to signify John stay quiet. The doors opened and they slipped out, walking quietly against the wall until Alex opened a door and ushered John inside. John stepped in only to see a dark stairwell leading up.
"Go on," Alex whispered excitedly, stepping in and closing the door behind him carefully.
John reluctantly stepped up and began walking up the staircase. When he reached the top he met a white door. He paused to let Alex catch up before slowly opening it. John gasped in amazement at the sight ahead, slowly walking out.
John's hair cracked like a whip in the wind up on the roof, a cotton candy sky of pinks and purples swirling above him in the sunset. He walked out and spun around, his smile uncontrollable and he gazed out onto the horizon.
"Alex," he breathed, his eyes wide in amazement.
Alex smiled and walked up behind him, wrapping his arms around John's waist from behind and resting his chin on his shoulder, swaying gently.
"Pretty huh?" Alex smiled, tilting his head to gaze at John. The sky was reflecting in his glasses, tinting his eyes with pastel swirls as he gazed up at it excitedly.
"It's beautiful," he sighed, relaxing into Alex's arms.
"Not nearly as beautiful as you," Alex smiled gently, kissing John's cheek. John blushed and giggled, shying away from Alex's lips.
Alex laughed and grabbed John's hand, leading him to the ventilation pipe before climbing up onto it. He patted the metal before reaching a hand out expectantly. John grabbed his hand and pulled himself up to sit on the hunched over pipe, crossing his legs and gazing out onto the horizon.
Alex admired John with loving eyes. He lifted his hand to John's face but as soon as he did John flinched away with a sharp breath.
"Woah, you okay babe?" Alex frowned, continuing to reach forward and caress his cheek gently.
He had just been brought back to Alex slapping him in his dream and it reminded him of his dad. He felt tears prickle at his eyes but as soon as they had appeared he successfully blinked them back. He turned to Alex and shot him a weak reassuring smile and a gentle nod.
"Yeah," he breathed, leaning into Alex's hand.
Alex ran his thumb along John's cheek bone, leaning forward to connect their lips gently. John leaned into the kiss, brushing Alex's hair out of his face as the wind blew it wildly behind him.
Alex broke away, resting his forehead on John's and letting his eyes flutter closed.
"I love you so much, John," he whispered with a smile, tracing his fingertips over John's jaw.
"I love you too, Alex," John smiled gently, pulling him into one last kiss.
