The Woods: Part 4

(AN: Pic isn't mine!)

We continued walking through the woods for a while longer, the moonlight streaming through the trees. If it hadn't been for the moon, it might have been pitch dark outside.

In the moonlight, we could still see the silhouettes of the traps up in the trees. It was like they were just a part of the forest, which was really disturbing. I would probably have had nightmares about them if I was a normal child, but I never did. The only nightmares I had at that time involved my father never coming back for me, which was always more terrifying than anything this world could throw at me.

Not all the traps held children though. Some held innocent animals like raccoons or bats, most of which weren't dead yet. One wanted to free them all. Every single time we passed a cage I could see in his eyes that he wanted to do something, but I think he could tell I was worried about getting caught by a hunter, so he just stuck to the mission, helping lead me through the forest, promising himself that someday he'd come back here and free every trapped animal and child.

So we continued walking in the quiet.

Until it was no longer quiet.

We walked in the dark when through the trees, I could suddenly see someone tall walking, holding a bright lantern and a shotgun.

The hunter from earlier.

I opened my mouth to gasp, so One had to quickly come behind me and cover my mouth to prevent me from screaming.

"Shhh...." He softly whispered under his breath. "Don't panic. We're almost there,"

I shakily nodded, so he let go. Then I followed behind him as he led the way, using the trees as cover. All was going well. We were staying out of sight, and the hunter hadn't spotted us yet.

That was until we passed by a simple bird sitting on a branch, our movement scaring it away, making it flap around and grab the hunter's attention, causing him to turn and point his lantern right at us.

One visibly winced, now having two trained spotlights on him. The lantern and the moon.

This was one of the only times I actually got a good view of what this hunter looked like. He was really tall, but not exactly thin. He was pretty muscular. He moved quickly and he wore big hunting boots. I didn't even see his face because it was covered by the bright light being shone at us. It was sad really, I had spent so much time locked away in his home and I never knew his name or what he had looked like. I didn't even remember his voice. All I remembered of him was how terrifying he was.

I remember freezing at the moment. It was like I was petrified in fear. I could recall One shouting something, but it had sounded so distant.

"SIX! COME ON!" He cried, shoving me in front of himself. I started running, but I wasn't really thinking about it. It was like my body was doing things, but my mind wasn't quite there. I was running, listening to the sound of gunshots behind me, just like before.

Something that I did happen to notice was that the hunter never did fire at me. Yes, he was chasing us, but he only ever fired shots at One. He only ever came close to hitting One. It was like he wasn't even aiming at me. I wasn't even relevant.

However, even though One was the one being fired at, he only ever seemed worried about me. He kept shouting things like, "Keep going," and "run Six! Keep running!"

So, I continued sprinting, not daring to look behind myself. I was too afraid of seeing something I didn't want to see. So I continued running until a small shed came into view in front of us.

"SIX! IN THERE!" One shouted from behind me. Not turning to face him, I sprinted up to it. The door was open, so I quickly got inside.

I waited for a second, seeing One running not far behind. He quickly slid on his side like a baseball player sliding for third base, just barely making it in. Then, in a rushed manner, I shoved the door shut and stood on my tip-toes to lock it.

I was about to let out a sigh of relief, thinking we were safe when the hunted suddenly started beating at the door, trying to break it down.

One and I quickly looked around the room, but there was no exit. We were trapped. And there was nothing inside this tiny shed to hide or protect us except for a lone shotgun.

"One! Get that!" I cried, pointing at it with one hand while standing in front of the door in an attempt to keep it shut.

He quickly turned and looked at the shotgun, seeming to wince slightly. He didn't move, visibly hesitating.

"What are you waiting for?! Just get it, we don't have time!" I squeaked, feeling the door start to break from behind me. He seemed to pause another minute, then hunched his shoulders and nodded in understanding.

He quickly slid over to it, lifting it up over his shoulder, only for him to fall backward. It was almost too big for him. The poor boy could barely even lift it.

"ONE! HURRY UP!" I cried as the hunter broke the top part of the wooden door open, making me jump backward and away from the now partially broken doorway.

He held up the shotgun, trying to aim it. But as he placed his finger on the trigger, he froze.

"I... can't pull the trigger. I need your help," He stated.

I didn't have time to argue with him. I looked up at the hunter, who was reaching through the hole he punched in the door and reaching down for the handle, then sprinted behind One, helping him hold up the gun. He aimed it at the hunter's chest through the door, and I helped him hold it up.

Then, I pulled the trigger, causing the gun to shoot, making the two of us fly backward from all the force that had just been fired.

It was so loud.

There was a ringing noise in my head now, bouncing around my mind.

The white noise hurt. I was worried that I had permanently damaged my hearing.

I slowly blinked my eyes to see the hunter fall backward.

One slowly stood himself up, brown eyes going wide from below the bag.

"No...." He whispered, his voice like a pin drop.

"Is he..." I asked, voice squeaky. "Did we..."

One seemed to slowly swallow, then hesitantly stepped towards the broken wooden door, pushing it open.

He silently walked outside, kneeling down by the hunter we had just shot.

He then bowed his head, looking at the fresh wound in the adult's chest. I could see through the holes in the paper bag that his brown eyes were squeezed shut.

"One...?" I asked him, furrowing my eyebrows and cocking my head to the side. "Did..."

One slowly shook his head, and dropped down to his knees, placing a small hand on the hunter. The paper bag did a very good job of hiding his expressions, so I had no idea what he was thinking.

"We... we helped free him from this world," One breathed, sounding devastated. He was talking as if we had just shot a family member of his or something. "He... he's in a better place now. A safer place. A place where he can see the sun."

I frowned slightly.

People died in this world all the time. It happened to so many children. I hated to admit it, but I was used to it by now. My biggest concern was regaining my breath from all the adrenaline I was feeling just a minute ago. But One seemed to see it differently.

"He was a bad man," I reminded him. "He was trying to hurt us. I-It's good that he's gone."

"...No," One breathed, looking up at me and slowly shaking his head. "Don't say that. That's the way the world wants you to think."

"Huh?" I questioned, cocking my head to the side. "But it's true. He hurts people!"

"No. No one is just 'bad.' He was hiding from the world. He was scared of me. He was just trying to protect himself. He was living the way the world taught him to live. The...The world failed him." One squeaked, standing up and walking towards me, holding out his hand again. "That's why I-... that's why we need to change the world."

To this day I could never understand how he could say that. The hunter locked me up. The hunter shot at him. The hunter had full intentions of killing him, yet he still spoke such kind words for him.

"He's not bad," One whispered, grabbing my arm and pulling me forward. "He could have been good, had he been born in another world."
