Daniel pulled Kristina away and headed towards the real festival outside the gym as Ella had instructed them to do. "W-Wait!" Kristina tried to stop Daniel from walking too fast. "Slow down!"
Daniel smiled all shy-like to himself as he recalled the memories of their childhood days. Kristina was chasing Daniel and she used to shout, "Peanut Butter, wait for me! No fair! No fair! You're too fast!"
"Daniel!" she yelled. "You're so unfair... Walk slower would you? I'm having a hard time with these stupid high-heeled shoes."
"Ah," he grinned, as he saw the resemblance of the past and the present Kristina. "Then shall I carry you like a princess?"
She quickly made a stance as if she was getting ready for a fight. "Back off Romeo! You're messing with the wrong Juliet!"
Daniel snorted and walked closer to her. "S-Stop! I'm warning you!" Kristina said. "You're gonna regret it!"
"Ooh. I'm so scared," Daniel sarcastically replied. "I wonder what I'm gonna do with this shorty."
After hearing the word "shorty", Kristina immediately reacted. "Who are you calling shorty you butthead?!!!"
"My, my," Daniel continued teasing. "Easily offended aren't we? Little girls should watch their tongue when speaking to guys. What if a guy will suddenly act hostile towards you? "
"So what?!" Kristina was mad now. "I'll beat him up! And don't call me a little girl, you stupid pig!"
"Hmm?" Daniel put both his hands on his pockets, looked at Kristina with his doe eyes and said, "What if I was that hostile guy? What if I do something to you right now?" He walked closer and closer to her, making her more and more uncomfortable. She took steps back. "Stay away!"
As she took another step back, she accidentally stepped on her gown and almost fell on her butt. Daniel quickly saved her by grabbing her hand and holding her close him, the way he held her back at the gym. "You see? You're so defenseless."
Kristina couldn't utter a single word. She was still paralyzed at the fact that Daniel, a boy, saved her. She had never been saved by a boy before, and she didn't want to be saved. Especially if it's a boy. "Let me go," she said.
"Ha ha," Daniel put his face closer to hers. "Your face is red again."
Daniel's face was a centimeter away, and he was hugging her too. She couldn't help but recall the little incident earlier, when he kissed her at the dance. Twice.
"W-We should go to the food stalls around here, let's not waste the prize money," she said with a straight face. "Now come on and let me go you baboon."
"Meanie." Daniel muttered. "You sure you can walk? I can carry you if you want."
"No thank you," Kristina wobbled towards the hotdog stall. "Mmm. I smell something good around here."
After an hour, Daniel and Kristina ate at almost every food stall present within the festival. Kristina walked even funnier than before. Everytime she took a step, she would scream in her head. It totally hurt and her legs felt like jelly, all wiggly and unsteady. "Oh!" she cried. She pointed towards a bright area surrounded by many people. "Daniel, I wanna play that shooting game too."
"Yeah, yeah." Daniel got bored as usual. "I bet she's gonna make the vendor cry," he thought.
Kristina accurately shot the small toys infront of her and won a lot of prizes. A number of people crowded just to see her shoot clean shots so easily. "Waaaah..." they said in atonishment. "This chick's good."
"Miss..." The vendor uttered. "Aren't you satisfied yet?"
"I'm bored," Daniel too. "Let's go somewhere else. You're hands are already full of prizes."
Kristina looked at her arms holding a lot of packages containing food. "Um... Yeah. I think I did win a little too much..." she said. They both walked around the school grounds with no destination at all. Kristina felt her feet getting sore. "Damn it's so painful," she thought to herself.
"Where are we going?" Daniel asked.
"Who knows." Kristina said. She bit her lip and clenched her fist as she took one step after another. Her toes were getting numb now. "These shoes were probably made for torture!"
Daniel noticed since earlier that Kristina had a hard time walking. He knew she was in pain but he kept quiet. Kristina never shows her tears to anyone, she never concerns anyone with her own problems and she prefers doing things by herself. He knew her since they were kids. He knew her too well.
After taking another step, Kristina closed her eyes tight and screamed in her head. "PAINFUL!"
She continued walking. Daniel was behind her and he saw everything. He walked a bit faster and as he passed by Kristina, he took her hand and continued walking as if nothing happened. Kristina looked at Daniel but he kept looking away. It was an embarrassing thing for him to do but he did it anyway. "So?" he asked. "Mind telling me where we're going?"
"Um..." Kristina muttered. "To the roof top."
It was six o'clock now and it was getting dark. Daniel never let go of Kristina's hand. They went up to the roof top and sat at the usual place. "So Poopy," Daniel started. "Of all places, why here? You do know we're all alone in this dark place, and I'm a guy. I might--"
"I know you wouldn't," Kristina interrupted. "You might have changed a lot since we were kids, but I know you're not that kind of guy to do stupid things."
Daniel was speechless. Kristina countered his tease-attack. For some reason, he felt embarrassed and looked away again. "You know," Kristina said, hugging her legs to her chest upon staring at the sky. "I changed a lot too. I'm not the girl I was years ago. My mom and my friends kept bugging me why I don't act like a normal girl. I don't like to go shopping, I hate dresses and I don't like going out with guys. I myself wonder about that. Am I really that weird? What should I do to act more girly and stuff?"
Daniel watched her as she closed her eyes and inhaled the fresh air. "Why am I so different?"
"Well," Daniel began to stare at the starry sky too. "I don't think you act girly, but you're definitely a girl." He laughed as he remembered that time when he accidentally walked inside the bathroom while she was taking a bath. He couldn't forget the look on her face.
"To be honest with you, I'm totally against this arranged marriage between us. Why did mom and dad agree to this? To get married with someone I don't even love? How would they feel if they were in our shoes?" Kristina wrinkled her forehead.
Daniel thought about it too. An arranged marriage was unfair on their part, and he was against it too. "It was our mothers' decision," he said. "When my mom was pregnant with me, she and Aunt Lizzy kept talking about how marrying their children will make them relatives and stuff. Uncle Jacob and my dad also agreed to that. I mean, that's just crazy. They're insane. But when my mom died, your mom decided to fulfill that promise."
Kristina looked at Daniel. As usual, his face never changes. His expression is always the same, he always wore that bored face. Even when talking about his mother. She remembered way back when they were kids, Daniel would look so sad and stare at space at her garden.
"Peanut Butter, why do you look so gloomy? Here! Flowers for you!" the five year old Kristina handed out a basket filled with newly picked flowers.
"Poopy..." he muttered. "Why do you have two people who loves you so much? Why do I only have one?"
Kristina sat on the grassy ground beside Daniel and faced him. "Huh? What are you talking about?"
Daniel stared at his shoes and had a confused look on his face. "Why don't I have a mommy? My daddy said that mommy went to a beautiful place up there," he pointed towards the sky. "He said my mommy loved me so much, but why did she leave me? I don't even remember her face. Why do I only have one person who takes care of me while you have two?"
Kristina didn't understand what he meant by then, but because he was sad, she just hugged him and said, "That's not true! Poopy loves Sir Peanut Butter too."
"Yeah..." Daniel said as Kristina almost squeezed him to death.
"Poopy!" Daniel clapped his hands infront of Kristina's face. "What are you all dazed about? Are you asleep? Wake up!"
Kristina looked at Daniel. Back then, she didn't understand what he meant, or what he was feeling. Now she does. She looked at Daniel and gave him a painful smile. "Hey now..." Daniel acted suspicous. "Why do you have that look on your face that's saying 'I pity you'?
Kristina laughed. "Nothing."
"Say," Daniel began. "You seriously don't remember that time when we made that promise?"
"What promise?" Kristina stared blankly at him.
Daniel groaned and pulled his face closer to Kristina's. He held her head and looked deep into her eyes, "You made me promise you that I'd kiss you a hundred times when I come back. Should I refreshen your memory?"
Kristina pushed him away and crawled backwards. "Stay away! I told you already, I was a kid back then! I was stupid! Break that promise!"
"No can do," Daniel said in a teasing tone as he caressed his chest. Kristina had brute strength, everytime she pushed Daniel away, he would feel his chest hurt from time to time, but he didn't mind.
"I am a man of my word, and I keep my promises even if they are stupid."
"I hate you," Kristina mumbled.
"Ah. Out of a hundred, there's one kiss down." Daniel said.
Kristina turned around and faced him with her jaw dropped. "One?! You kissed me twice! Basic math dude! One plus one equals--"
Daniel sealed her words with another kiss. "Two down," he mischievously grinned. Kristina covered her mouth with her hands and stomped both of her feet, she was defeated again. "No fair!!! That was the third time!!!"
"Nope, that was the second. Because earlier, you said it wasn't considered as a kiss."
"You're so unreasonable! I hate you!" Kristina steamed with anger and embarrassment.
"That's fine. I hate you too," Daniel replied.
A smirk was on Daniel's face while a pout was on Kristina's. The fireworks began and they watched the colorful, bright lights dance in front of them on that clear sky, on that beautiful night.
When they both went home to Kristina's house, Lizzy greeted them happily. "You two look so adorable!!! Wait! I'll go get the camera!" She quickly ran upstairs.
"There you are Tina," Jacob said. "Did you enjoy the lunch we ordered for you? It was your favorite, Kung-Pao Chicken."
Kristina gave him a puzzled look. "What? Dad, I forgot my lunch. You didn't send me anything."
"Really? Well that's strange," her dad scratched his head. "I gave them to Daniel to give to you. Daniel, you did give her the take out right?"
A slight grin crossed over Daniel's face and Kristina's eyes popped open when she found out about the truth. "Daniel you IDIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!" She screamed at the top of her lungs. "Say cheese!" Lizzy took the shot.
After a long night, Kristina finally changed into her regular clothes and was ready to go to bed when her mom knocked on her door. "Honey, Daniel and his father are going home now. Go down and say goodbye," she said.
"Do I have to?" she muttered. She went downstairs and found her dad and her uncle John still talking. Her mom joined their conversation. She went to the door and stepped outside, she saw Daniel standing idly by himself. "What's up?" he said, when he noticed Kristina beside him.
"Nothing. Mom told me to say goodbye. Well then, goodbye. I'm coming back in now," Kristina yawned.
"Hey," Daniel said. "You forgot something."
Kristina turned around to ask for what she forgot when suddenly, Daniel held the collar of her shirt and kissed her again. He slowly let go, and then walked away towards their car. "You butthead!!" Kristina turned red. "That was the fourth--"
"Third." He interrupted. "And there will be ninety-seven more to come."
Kristina roared like a monster and went inside the house, ran to her bedroom and punched her pillows. "DANIEL YOU'RE SUCH AN IDIOT I WANT TO KILL YOU! DIE! DIE! DIEEEE!!!!!!"
"Young love..." her mother made a dreamy smile as she leaned on Kristina's door.
