Chapter 43 - One Kiss Short
Today was another usual day for everybody—except for Kristina. Since they were dismissed early again and had no class in the afternoon, Lizzy took this chance and dragged her daughter to her room. She showed her the materials she bought yesterday at the mall. Lucky for her, there was a sale, and she managed to snatch a lot of great and cheap fabric, yarn, needles—for short: a brand new sewing kit.
Lizzy showed her how to knit a simple and basic scarf. Kristina instantly opposed to the idea of knitting something for Daniel (since she sucked at it and he'll make fun of her for sure) but nobody could really resist Lizzy. She forced her daughter to make the darn scarf by threatening her that she'll show Daniel their old baby photos. There was one picture Kristina wanted to burn. It was the one where they were four years old and were taking a bath together. The little boy was innocently holding her left butt cheek as she climbed up the shower's platform. She shivered every time she remembered it.
She gave in and agreed to her mother. After class that morning, she immediately went home and Lizzy made her get started on the project. It actually took her three hours just to finish one inch of it. Making the scarf really got into her nerves. They said knitting was a therapy and could calm down even the hottest heads. Well it wasn't working on her.
"Patience," Lizzy would always say every time she checked up on her. Kristina could only groan in frustration. Outside her room, Daniel was about to knock and hang around (he was terribly bored) until he suddenly felt a chill in the air. Kristina's black aura must be getting larger by the minute. He sensed that she was not in a very good mood, so he went back to the guest room and lied down on his bed.
At the corner of his eye, he looked at the item he bought with Kristopher yesterday. It was hidden under the table. He hoped Kristina would like it and use it, at least for his sake. He wrapped the present inside a box and tied it neatly with a red ribbon; he even knotted perfectly. He wasn't sure if it looked right since he never gave anyone anything before, so he felt rather nervous about giving this to his fiancée.
He laughed amusingly in his mind. Fiancée, huh? They've been carrying that status for months now, but did they really have an actual relationship? Looking back at everything, it all seemed like a fun adventure. A lot of things proved their real feelings for each other, but the opposite party still hasn't admitted it properlyuntil now. Kristina was as stubborn as a mule.
Daniel suddenly remembered tomorrow's event. Tomorrow, he was going to finish the promise. But after that, will he feel satisfied? He doubted it. Oh well. He'll just have to find out.
Kristina, on the other hand, had her thoughts occupied with that same idea as well. As she continued to knit the scarf, color was rising in her cheeks because she was thinking of all the possible things that might happen tomorrow. Knowing Daniel, finishing that promise won't be as simple as it sounded. Surely there's another surprise. And she hated surprises.
Night fell quickly and Kristina fell asleep after knitting the scarf two inches longer. Daniel slept rather late since he stayed up re-reading his comic books. These two haven't seen much of each other today, so even though time seemed short, for them it was a long day.

Thursday had finally come. Kristina and her class were making final arrangements on their room for tomorrow's party. She kept an eye out for Sean and Ella. She noticed him stealing glances at her best friend from time to time. How come she didn't notice this before? Ella was completely oblivious to what was happening; she continued decorating the walls with more mistletoes along with Daniella. The girls were having so much fun knowing that Kristina and Daniel would surely stand under at least one.
For Kristina, standing under a mistletoe was like standing on a land mine. She thinks she's had enough with the public kissing. Although it only happened once, (a few months ago during the school festival) and it happened to be her first kiss too, she didn't want it to happen again. She couldn't take all the PDA and embarrassment. She was okay with doing it in private, but not too private. She vigorously shook her head and turned red up to her ears when another thought entered her head.
It was today.
Today was the day they complete the hundred kisses and the promise they made when they were kids. Kristina was more nervous about coming to Daniel's house. She hasn't visited there for a while now. And she wondered why her uncle Jonathan made a sudden trip back to Europe? She couldn't help wondering why.
As she was arranging the ornaments, she glanced at Daniel. He was staring oddly at Kristopher and Daniella. Ever since those two confessed to each other, they were always together. To be more precise, Kristopher always found amusement in teasing Daniella so he never left her side once. That's what it seemed on the outside, but in the inside, there was a whole other story that only he and his cousin knew.
Daniella's face looked like a Picasso today. She was clearly irritated because Kristopher kept teasing her about her "cute" get-up last Tuesday when he dropped off the gifts at her apartment. He didn't forget to mention the bird's nest hairdo and the large, pink bunny-slippers. The weirdest part was... she was still smiling cheerfully. She must be used to it already.
When Daniel noticed that Kristina had been looking at their direction for a long time now, he looked back at her and gave her a smug look. Her left eye twitched as she continued arranging (read: destroying) the ornaments.
That evening, she changed into casual clothing and put her hair down on her shoulders. She was at least conscious about her appearance tonight. As she gaped at her reflection on the mirror, she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She felt like she wasn't prepared to face this challenge yet.
Lizzy suddenly came to her room, probably to check on the scarf. When she noticed that her daughter was all dressed up, she asked why. "Honey..." she looked her up and down. Kristina was getting ready for another lecture about fashion. "You look so adorable today! Are you going somewhere?"
"Um..." was all that she said. She wore a pair of loose, beige pedal-pushers, a camouflage-patterned shirt and her usual white sneakers. Not really girly, but the items matched, so her mother was actually pleased with her choice of clothing for once. "I'm going over at Daniel's place."
Her mother's eyes sparkled immediately and Jacob appeared in her room, magically when he heard what she had just said. He looked at his daughter and gave her a slightly-panicked, slightly-confused face. "T-To Daniel's? Why?"
"I dunno. He just invited me over," she replied. It was half the truth though. There was no way she was telling them that the real reason was to complete that damned promise.
Jacob suddenly remembered his talk with Daniel. He knew about the situation so he quickly became understanding and considered his reasons for inviting his daughter. And besides, he knew Daniel wouldn't do something stupid to Kristina even if he was on crack. Although, he hope he wasn't.
"Dear, you're still kids—" he warned, but she interrupted.
"Dad, if you're thinking that we'll do something dirty... well. Please don't. Because we're not." She was giving her father a reassuring look and she eyed her mother hopelessly. Lizzy was pouring out hearts everywhere. "He told me he just needed to talk to me about something. It's been bothering him the whole week and he's only going to tell me why, tonight."
Jacob sighed. He knew it. Daniel was gonna tell her about it today. Okay, fine. He understands and gives his permission, but still. Why did it have to be in the evening?
"What time are you coming home?" he asked.
"She'll probably sleep over!" Lizzy giggled. "Or! Or!"
"MOM." Kristina groaned. Seriously. That woman is just too hopeful. "I'm not sure dad. He said he'll drive me home anyway."
"Okay," Jacob concluded. He trusted that boy despite his perception of teenagers this present age. He knew Jonathan's son wasn't like that, obviously. "Tell Daniel to give me a call whenever something happens. He does have my number, right?"
"I think so."
"You should really use your phone, honey. We can't contact you in cases of emergency."
"I don't know how to..." she admitted shyly. "But maybe I'll study the manual later after I get back."
Lizzy chuckled. "A phone as old as that doesn't have a manual anymore, sweety!"
Kristina was about to argue when they heard a beep from outside the house. She checked her watch and snatched her shoulder bag. "He's here. I'm going now!"
"HAVE FUN!!!" Lizzy called out to her daughter, already running down the stairs.
"ALWAYS KEEP YOUR GUARD UP AND DEFENSE READY!" Jacob couldn't resist. Daniel heard it from outside and he snorted at the idea. Her parents were really something. Kristina entered the car casually and put on the seat belt.
"You ready?" he asked. Kristina's face turned red after hearing that sentence. She was glad it was dark; that way, Daniel wouldn't see how embarrassed she was.
"Which part should I be ready for?" she replied with a dull tone.
Daniel snorted again, knowing exactly what she was feeling right this moment. He was feeling nervous as well, but not for the same reason. He had no idea know how to deliver the news later. He beeped the car, signalling her parents that they were leaving and took off.
Fifteen minutes later, they arrived. Kristina stared at the huge house from inside the house. If she remembered correctly, the house didn't change at all. It was still the same, but she wondered if they expanded it or something. It looked bigger than usual.
Daniel parked his car in front of the fence and went out; Kristina did the same. She didn't like it when guys opened doors for her, yes, she's been like that ever since Kristopher kidnapped her before. She took another glance at the house before coming in.
"Make yourself at home," Daniel said as he left her inside the living room. Kristina felt the air of nostalgia fill her heart. She used to visit here a lot when they were kids. Last time she visited was probably thirteen years ago, but the memory was still fresh in her mind.
She noticed that there were still unopened boxes lying across the floor and the furniture was still wrapped in plastic. She couldn't help but wonder why again. Why was she suddenly feeling suspicious? Daniel appeared from the kitchen with a tray of orange juice and biscuits. He motioned for Kristina to follow him as he climbed up the stairs.
They entered his room and he placed the tray on the side table beside his bed. He looked at Kristina, she was observing his room. She thought that his room changed a lot since the last time she's been here. His walls were now covered in dark-blue wallpapers; he had a study desk at the corner though she knew he hardly used it, the floor was carpeted in a thick brown fur and he had his own bathroom.
"Satisfied?" Daniel jokingly asked. He was sitting on his chair beside his desk as Kristina sat on his bed. She slightly bounced on it and secretly envied his soft and bouncy mattress.
"Yeah," she snapped at him, clearly looking like she wasn't in the mood for jokes. But Daniel didn't care—she always was. "I was expecting your room to be more like a science lab."
He looked at her with confusion and mischief in his eyes. "What? A lab? What do you think I am?"
"A perverted alien from outer-space," she replied almost too quickly. She was also pointing an accusing finger at him. He could only laugh at her childish actions, but decided to play along, to lower down the tension a bit.
"I see," he muttered. "I may not have a real laboratory, but I do perform experiments from time to time."
Kristina thought he was serious. "What experiments?"
He walked over to his bed and sat on the opposite side of Kristina; she unknowingly slid a bit further away from him and tried to keep a fair distance. He looked at her face. "I dissect humans for my research. And I want you to be my one-hundredth experiment."
She frowned at his reply and smacked him right at the back of his head... but before she could continue doing so, Daniel got a hold of her wrist. He planned on making her face red until it practically poured smoke and exploded. This boy was just too bored.
"Since I'm a perverted outer-space alien who conducts experiments on human beings such as yourself," he smirked. "I need you to take all your clothes off so I can perform the—"
"DON'T EVEN START!" she withdrew her hand from his grip and started slapping his shoulder countless times, in hopes of making him shut his mouth, but he only kept talking more. "BUTTHEAD SHUT UP!!!"
Daniel contained his laughter. "When I make these experiments, I usually allow my victims to lose consciousness by injecting a certain drug—"
Kristina was embarrassed and furious at the same time. Seeing that slapping was no use, she began pulling his cheeks apart. But to Daniel, it had no specific effect, excluding the fact that he couldn't say anything properly anymore with his mouth getting stretched apart.
"...and then I apply a certain poopy cream all over their body—"
"You are disgusting!" Kristina shrieked. She stopped pulling his cheeks and started pulling his hair.
"No," Daniel said as he leaned over the bed (because she was pulling his hair so hard) "You are. It's your name. And ow. I don't want a haircut yet."
Kristina could feel the fury rise in her veins. "I'll make you bald and shove all your hair down your throat!"
"Now that's disgusting," Daniel said in a serious, but sarcastic way. This guy's personality and tone of voice were both contradicting, so it was easy to drive you mad just to guess what he really meant. He continued his scientific explanation, much to her horror. "After the poopy cream, I sprinkle the person with a lot of feathers so they'd look like chicken—"
"THE HELL?!" Kristina looked at him with a disbelieving look. She finally let go of his hair and was now deciding on what to do next to make him shut up.
"...and I doodle on their faces using a permanent poopy-colored marker too..."
"Daniel you're an idiiioooot!"
"...then take a loooot of pictures before posting them on facebook."
"You can get arrested for that!" she cupped his face with both her hands and began compressing his face.
"...and you're my next victim, so I'd like you to be obedient if you don't want to undergo such—" he was cut off when Kristina knitted her brows, glared at him with pinkish cheeks and literally shut him up by crashing her lips on his.
She had no idea why she did that. That's what Daniel did every time he wanted her to shut up, and was now hoping that it'd work on him too. It did just a fine job of shutting his mouth up. Her hands that were cupped around his cheeks softened its grip and Daniel looked like he didn't blink the whole time. After realizing what she had done, he tensed up at once.
Slowly breaking away, Kristina shot him an embarrassed look and quickly looked away. "Sixteen. You finally stopped talking."
Taking in a huge amount of breath, she wondered if this was the real reason why she came here. It was to finish that promise right? She already made a start, and at a totally unexpected moment at that. Daniel looked like he was still in shock. After snapping out of it, he chuckled softly at Kristina.
"If that's all it takes for you to kiss me, I'd keep talking every day."
She sighed all the nervousness out before returning his gaze. She ignored his remark, knowing that he'll have another genius reply to it. "There's eighty-four left. Do you want to finish this or not?"
He just laughed in reply. There was no need to rush. His teasing earlier was just his own way of calming himself down. He was really nervous and scared to tell her later about him leaving again. But he had to man up and just get it out before it's too late. He looked at her and smiled. "Thanks."
"For what?" she looked confused.
"For granting this silly request."
Kristina stared at him again, still looking a bit stirred, but she returned the smile. She definitely had no idea of what was about to come next. "After this, there's something I need to tell you," he breathed out. She nodded her head unsurely, suspicion rising in her veins again.
Daniel and Kristina faced each other. He cleared his throat as she took a deep breath. "Shall we start?" he asked, grinning at her. She glared at him softly and nodded her head a yes. He took her left hand and gave it a small kiss, his eyes never leaving her for one second. "Seventeen. Make sure to count it. Or else, we'll have to start over."
"I'll count it," she stuttered.
Slowly, being both nervous and excited himself, he began trailing kisses from the back of her palm, up to her wrist.
Her skin was soft and warm, but upon holding her hand on the process, he noticed how cold it was. He didn't know if she was just plain scared or nervous. What he knew for sure was that she didn't hate what he was doing.
"Twenty-three..." she said as he kissed the crook on her elbow. She felt like all the hairs on her body stood up. Why did she feel excited about this? She mentally slapped herself for thinking such thoughts. Daniel then took her right hand and did the same as the other. He tugged her sleeve up just a little bit so his lips could reach until her shoulder. "Thirty-four... Thirty-five..." she continued counting.
The sounds of his lips brushing on her skin were enough to make her tingle. She felt like fainting on the spot, but she knew she had to keep herself together just until they finish this thing. After he was through with her shoulder, Daniel put an arm around her and gently laid her flat on his bed.
Kristina was trying to calm her rapid heartbeats and breathing. It was like she was desperately catching her breath while Daniel effortlessly took it away.
She closed her eyes, unable to look at him with her flushed face right now. He took her hand again and chastely kissed each finger.
A few moments later, he looked at her. She looked like she already passed out. "Poopy?" he called.
"Forty-five..." she said in reply. She opened her eyes and closed it again. Daniel smiled. His thoughts were still messy inside his head. How was he supposed to break the news? He felt like such a wimp. He placed his hand on her flat stomach and felt her flinch. She thought he was getting dangerously comfortable with exploring her body.
"Yellow card." She glared at him, but he only snorted.
"Relax." He smirked.
"How can I?!" she bit back.
"Shh," he mumbled upon pulling her shirt up like it was the most natural thing to do.
Kristina squeaked internally and winced. "DANIEL! BUTTHEAD!"
It was pointless. Her stomach was exposed. Luckily, he didn't pull it that high—it stopped just below her chest. He even felt her loud heartbeats all the way there.
"You're asking for a death sentence," she gritted her teeth and gave him a look that meant she wanted to kick his gut.
Before she could protest further, he wrapped his arms around her back and pulled her in closer to him. He sent her a lazy grin before he bumped noses with her.
Staring at her for a long time, her expression softened, and she gradually felt at ease. It was always like this. Whatever the situation, just a simple look from him would calm her down.
Ironically, just a simple look from him would easily piss her off too. Depending on the situation.
Daniel gently planted small kisses all over her flat stomach. From her belly-button, to her sides. When he threatened to go lower, Kristina flicked his forehead but he only laughed. He snorted again when he noticed that she'd been quiet for some time now.
"Still counting?" It took her several seconds before she could reply.
"What..?" she held in a gasp. He smiled at her expression and pulled down her shirt to its original place.
"Sixty-four," he told her. She looked at him confused at first, but then suddenly remembered. She slightly opened her mouth and closed it again. She averted her gaze from him once more. "If you don't count it, then we'll have to start all over."
"Oh." She mumbled. "Yeah. Right."
He climbed up the bed and pulled her hand so she could sit up. She was wondering what he was planning to do this time. He positioned himself behind her and slowly fixed her hair, placing it away from her neck. She held her breath after she knew what he wanted to do.
Daniel pulled her blouse lower, enough to expose her white and smooth back. He looked at it with admiration before he continued. When he started trailing another series of small kisses from her back up to her neck, he had lost himself.
The thought of having her to himself, of being the only she allowed to kiss her and touch her like this-- it gave him a strong sense of pride and a possessiveness in which he never felt before.
When he snapped back to reality, he was already nibbling on the back of her earlobe.
Kristina was still holding her breath. She gripped his bed sheets and shut her eyes tight upon biting her lower lip. She was unsure of how to react with all these new sensations.
When she sighed, or rather, released a long breath, Daniel stopped. He mentally smacked his own head for losing himself back there even for just a moment. He needed to control himself before he actually does something stupid.
"How many was that?" he asked, trying to keep his composure. He was actually glad that she wasn't facing him right now. He could only imagine the look on her face when she sees him like this right now.
"Exactly eighty," she replied after swallowing hard.
Daniel's eyes widened. Already eighty? He needed to slow down. "Then there's twenty left."
He placed his arm around her shoulder and laid her down again—she kept looking at him the whole time. Both of them were flat on the bed now, with Kristina using his arm as a pillow. Using his free hand for support, Daniel positioned himself again, leaning right beside her. They locked gazes for a moment, until his fingers began caressing her face.
He started again by planting a single kiss above her chest and just below her neck. He was sure he felt her heart knock on his lips a few times. He brushed his lips on the left, unto the right.
As he began going lower and to a more dangerous area, Kristina gasped and held his forehead, preventing him from going any lower. She was about to complain when she realized that he was chuckling in amusement at her quick reaction. So he was only kidding.
He looked up to meet her eyes with a mischievous smirk and saw that she was glaring at him. She held her glare as she said each word menacingly. "Eighty-nine. And don't. You. Dare."
Daniel chuckled deeply and went up. Kristina's heart skipped when he threw his left leg over her body and hovered above her, trapping her to the bed now. Although she didn't let the flicker of distress show on her expression, she was sure her traitorous cheeks gave her away.
He poked her nose with his and teasingly blew on her lips. She stared at him in disbelief as he began to kiss the nape of her neck slowly.
"Ninety..." she felt her breath hitch on her throat. It was a ticklish and warm--no, a hot sensation. She couldn't deny not liking it.
He kissed below her ear as a thin layer of sweat beaded her forehead. Her eyes were squeezed shut, her face was red and her breathing was frantic as she panted for air; a sight quite tempting to him that he had to stop himself from going further and do something beyond what they had agreed upon. "Ninety-one..."
Right below her chin, she felt his hot lips press on her skin. She sighed a breath she forgot she'd been holding. "Ninety-two..."
He wasn't aware of where he was planting his kisses now. He felt light-headed and subconsciously set his face on the nape of her neck again. He breathed in her scent and sighed.
What was happening to him?
Slowly and pleasingly, he nibbled on her nape and teased her by slightly brushing his lips against her delicate skin.
She was wincing and biting her lip so hard now that she felt like it was going to bleed at any moment. Daniel finally decided to go with the kiss, but he didn't realize he already went a bit far.
As he kissed the nape of her neck rather longer compared to all the light kisses before, he felt his mouth slightly open, and he literally tasted her skin.
She was fighting to keep her breath steady to no success, and ended up sighing and whimpering under her breath. It reminded him exactly how defeated by her he was. She felt like she was getting dizzy but wide awake at the same time. When she felt his warm mouth press harder on her neck, almost as if he was sucking on them—she gasped and pinched his shoulder. "Ninety-three."
If she hadn't pinched him, who knows how much further he would've went? Again, he cursed himself for losing control. He saw the area of the neck where he just supposedly kissed. Damn it. He actually left a mark. It was still pink and fresh, and he just knew Kristina was going to kill him.
He went up to her face and gazed at her hazel eyes. She looked at him with anticipation and braced herself for the last seven kisses. He gently kissed her chin. "Ninety-four..."
Then her left cheek. "Ninety-five..."
Her right... "Ninety-six..."
He gave her another smirk before kissing her bottom lip, then her upper lip. "Ninety-seven... Ninety-eight..."
Daniel looked at her eyes once more. He stared at her face and smiled. Though she was dizzy and winded, Kristina kissed him back fervently. She was able to hold her breath for much long than she thought she could, but he kept letting her breathe briefly in between kisses.
Then, the passion slowly melted into something much gentler. He smiled as she kissed him back sweetly, tenderly, and then he finally pulled away from her. To him, this was more than just a sweet childhood promise that he wanted to fulfill.
This was probably the last time they shared moments like this.
He flopped down onto his side of the bed and covered his face with his back-arm. What they did just now was exhausting on his part due to the fact that he tried his best to control himself.
Kristina sat up with a flustered face and looked at him with a stirred expression. "Ninety-nine? Did I count wrong?"
Daniel knew that and meant to do that. He didn't want to finish the deal just now. He wanted to save the hundredth kiss for a special occasion. "No, you counted right," he mumbled.
She just continued to stare at him.
"I thought you said you wanted to finish the promise?"
"I changed my mind," he mumbled under his breath again. Kristina rolled her eyes.
"I'll never understand what you're thinking," then she sighed. "So? What was it you wanted to tell me?"
Daniel took his arm off his eyes and stared at his ceiling. Was it the right time to tell her? Maybe he was wrong. Maybe the reason he was so nervous, wasn't because of the fact that she might not take the news too well, but maybe it was because he couldn't actually bring himself to say it.
He looked at her face and flashed her a cute smile. He took her arm and pulled her towards him; now they were lying on the bed with Daniel resting on Kristina's shoulder like a little boy.
He linked his fingers on hers, as if he didn't want to let them go and yawned on her neck, sending her another series of tingles. "Maybe tomorrow. For now, let's sleep."
She let out a breath that was caught in her throat when he suddenly pulled her in. "I can't sleep here. Dad will freak and mom will... Well. Be mom." She rolled her eyes again after envisioning Lizzy going crazy. Surely, they'll think they've done something.
"Then I'll just have to ask permission from uncle and auntie," he simply said as he took his phone from his pocket. He dialled Jonathan's number and after he picked it up, he straightened his voice. "Hey, uncle Jake? Yes, this is Daniel. Uh-huh. She's with me now."
Kristina hit his chest and signalled him to tell her father that nothing weird happened. Daniel got what she meant. He lightly laughed on the phone and politely replied to her father's paranoid questions. "No, uncle Jake. I didn't do those things to her."
She instantly blushed when another set of thoughts entered her mind. "So, can she sleep over tonight? Okay. Uh-huh. No, I won't do that. I promise. Yes, man's promise. Okay. Okay."
By the sounds of it, it sounded like her father was agreeing! With terms, of course. Kristina heard a girlishly squeal from Daniel's phone. She had no doubt it was her mother. He chuckled at what the woman said on the other line. "No auntie, we didn't and are not planning to. P-Please stop with that..." he felt like a sweat dropped from his forehead. "Of course not!"
"What? What'd she say?" Kristina asked out of curiosity. Who knows what her mother is probably saying right now? Daniel sighed on the phone.
"Yeah, I'll drop her off tomorrow early. Okay. Thank you for trusting me. Alright. Good night auntie."
He hung up and slid the phone back inside his pocket. "Done," he muttered. "Good night Poopy."
"WHAT?!" she smacked his chest again. "THEY ACTUALLY GRANTED YOU PERMISSION?!"
Daniel nodded, sleepily. He was already tired. Kristina groaned, knowing that she had no way of getting out on this one. She won't deny the fact that she wanted to sleep over, but what bothered her most is that they were sleeping on the same bed, alone in an almost empty house, at a very quiet neighbourhood. Adding the idea of what they just performed a few moments ago, she could only blush.
When she thought that Daniel was already sound asleep, she felt a burning sensation on her neck. She touched that specific area and silently hissed. "Ow."
"I forgot to tell you..." Daniel mumbled in his sleep. Kristina thought he was sleep-talking. "I accidentally gave you a kiss-mark. Make sure to let down your hair just until it disappears."
Her eyes widened as color rushed up to her ears. She clenched her fists and took a deep breath. A monstrous scream suddenly echoed all across the neighbourhood.
