The Ball
The colorful dressed and lively music filled the castle with great joy. Woman and men mingled with one another. People ate and drank to their heart's content.
Prince Richard walked around, smiling at all who passed. He danced with a few woman, but none of them had any intrest in talking. Richard sighed, Blair was with Jason, Tim was with Stephine, and Damian was with a friend of Blair's whom Richard forgot the name of. It was Fairy or something odd like that. It really was unfair, even his youngest brother was having a better time than him.
Barbara's coach stopped and she stepped out. Her magnificent dress pooled around her perfectly and she seemed to be glowing. There were a few men outside, smoking, who gawked at Barbara as she walked in.
The castle was beatiful, with golden walls, art on the celling, and a crystal chandelier. Barbara walked around exploring with no real goal. She somehow missed the looks of awe she was getting from everyone around her.
"I like your dress." Said a small voice behind Barbara.
"Thank you." Barbar replied.
There was a young girl getting glared at by a woman.
"Don't try to change the subject on me, Pixie."
"He seems very nice, Swan. I like him very much."
"You are obviously in love with him Pixie."
"I've only-"
Barbara intdrupted the pair's conversation. "Excuse me, but why are you calling each other Swan and Pixie?"
"Your supposed to use a fake name," The woman replied. "My real name is Blair."
"What is your name?" Barbara asked the young girl.
"Pixie. No one believes it's a real name, so I just use it."
"Oh. I'll be....." Barbara looked up the celling that was coved with a beatiful mural of Mount Olympus. "Do you know what the name of that character is?"
"That's the Oracle."
"Oracle.....I like that name. I'll go with it."
A tall man with a white streak in his hair walked over to the woman.
"Care to dance Mrs. Swan?"
Blair rolled her eyes playfully. "If I must." The pair hooked arms and walked onto the dance floor.
"It's been a pleasure," said Barbara to Pixie as she continued to walk around the ball.
Richard was having a drink when the most beatiful woman he had ever layed eyes on walked passed. She was wearing a green dress and mask but she had bright red hair, like nothing Dick had ever seen before. He straightened out his cloths and marched over to the woman.
"Good evening Miss." The Prince said as he kissed the top of her hand lighly.
"Good evening." She replied. Being this close he could now see sparkling green eyes.
"I am Prin-I mean Nightwing." Richard barely made it though his sentance properly.
"I'm Oracle." Her name, just like her, was perfect.
Richard cleared his throat, "Would you care to dance, Miss Oracle?"
"I would love too." She replied.
The pair began to dance together. At first moving very slowly, but it seemed as if they had danced together before. They moved together effortlessly captivating everyone that saw them.
When they stopped neither Barbara or Richard could tell if they had been daning for seconds or days. It felt timless, like somehow they had left the universe and time itself to dance with each other
"Do you want to go somewhere quieter?" Richard asked. Barbra gave a slient yes and took Richard's hand. The pair moved through the sea of people and through the winding hallways of the castle.
Richard pushed open a large, oak door to reveal a beatiful garden. They sat down on the side of a fountain.
"This is much better," Barbra said.
"We're you having a nice time?" Richard asked.
"I was having a good time, but...."
"But what?"
"It became a fantastic time when I met you."
The Prince took Barbara's hand and kissed it lightly. "I would very much argree with that. They talked with one anthor for a long time. It was scary how perfectly they were together. It was as if they were old friends instead just meeting each other.
"I know this seems instant, but I feel as if I have know you all my life." Richard said. "Is there any way we could have met before?'
"No. I don't believe so." Richard took Barbara's hand and kissed it lightly.
"Well than, I an very glad we have met." Barbara gazed into Richard's blue eyes and Richard gazed into her bright green eyes. It was pure bliss, until a thought struck Barbara. The woman gazed at the large clock tower.
"It's almost midnight!"
Richard smiled. "Already? Time does pass quickly when a good time is being had."
"I have to go."
"What do you mean? The ball is far from being over."
"I just have to go."
"A least tell me your real name!"
"Nightwing.......your someone important. I can tell. I'm not anyone important. Thank you for spending tonight with me. It was perfect."
"But-" The Prince was cut off by Barbara's lips meeting his. He closed his eyes for only a moment to enjoy the kiss even more but when he opened them again, his Oracle was gone.
Barbara ran. She ran with tears in her eyes, she didn't want to leave. But if Nightwing, the most perfect man she had ever met, saw her in rags what would he say? Would he ignore the change or dislike Barbara for who she really was? Barbra didn't want to know.
Richard ran inside the castle and looked through the crowds. His beatiful Oracle seemed to vanish.
"Excuse me. Have you seen a woman running though here with bright red hair, a emerald green dress? The name she chose was Oracle?" The three woman he asked the question to did not seem to know.
"Why do you need her?" Asked one of them coolly.
"Because I think I'm in love with her." Richard continued his search though the crowd.
"I hope he can find her." Said Harley to her sisters. Selina nodded and Ivy had a look of deep thought. The woman the man just described sounded too fimilar and Ivy didn't like that very much.
Barbara almost fell down the stairs several times as she sprinted to her coach. She took of her shoes and held them as she ran.
Richard saw Oracle ran to her coach.
"WAIT!" He screamed. This made Barbara speed up and drop one of her shoes. She got and the carriage and screamed, "Go!" To the driver.
Prince Richard watched as her carriage drove away. As he turned to begin his walk of shame to the castle something caught his eye. A shoe, her shoe. He picked it up and walked back to the castle.
When Richard got back inside the first person he saw was Jason who greeted him with, "Why are you holding a woman's shoe?"
Richard explained the night's events.
Blair, who was with Jason, looked very sad. "I talked to that woman, she seemed very kind."
"She wasn't just kind, she was perfect." Richard whispered.
"I have to go tell Pixie," Blair said. Soon enough Jason, Blair, Pixie, Damian, Tim and Stephine were all aware of the 'Missing Woman.'
"Can I see the shoe?" Blair asked. She examined the shoes. "I'm trying them on."
"What?" Richard exclamied.
"I have NEVER seen a shoe like this. It's like glass and silk at the same time!" Blair took off her own shoe and attempted to put on the other one. "It's too small! It is like trying to put on a shoe made for a small child. Stephine, try this on!" Stephine did and oddly enough Stephine also said it was too small. Even Pixie tried it on but it had the same effect.
"The shoe is clearly bigger than Pixie's foot, there is no reason she wouldn't be able to put it on." Jason said.
"What if it is a magical shoe? Blair is right the material if the shoe seems unworkdly. What if only Oracle can wear it?" Pixie's eyes glittered with excitment, she loved a good fairy tale.
Dick's eyes widened. "That would mean if the shoe was tried on every woman in Gotham, I would find Oracle!"
"I know you care for this wonan but is she really worth trying a 'magic' shoe on every lady on the Kingdom?" Tim asked.
"No Tim, she's worth more than checking all if Gotham. I would try this shoe on every woman on the planet if it ment I could see her one more time."
As Barbara rode away in the carriage she felt tears slip down her cheeks. Nightwing had stolen her heart the second she looked into his blue eyes. But if he saw her as the slave she's been forced to be.....Barbara feared his reaction.
The clock began to strike midnight. The first to go was the horses, the driver was next, the roof of the coach folliwed. The wheels than dispear ed which threw Barbara and the slipper she was holding, out of the carriage. The vehicle was gone in an instant and lastly the green dress became the sherds of blue once more.
Barbara started walk (see still had ways to go before she got home) but something made her stop. Shining in a patch of moonlight, was Barbara shoe. Barbara picked up the shoe, hugged it to her chest, and looked up at the starts.
"Thank you Dinah," She whispered. Barbara smiled at the sliver heel and began her trek home.
