Chapter 1- A RAINY DAY

March 15th, 1993.

It was a rainy day, with thunder clappings as if it was encouraging the clouds to cry more.

A tall and strange man walked down the street with a baby basket. He held the basket with his right hand, and an umbrella on the left. The strange man walked to a public phone and called the orphanage saying: "They're by the doorstep."

The confused nanny couldn't understand anything. From whom and why? She managed to mutter an 'okay' before he hung up the phone.

The unsettled nurse rushed outside to check what was happening. There and then, she saw the babies crying and shivering in the basket. They were twins, a boy, and a girl. The nanny's confused eyes wondered who he was. The strange man. Her eyes only caught his back view.

"He shouldn't have walked so fast, should he?" She questioned herself.

"Sir! Excuse me sir!! " She called out but he didn't care to sign or turn.

" Maybe it was because of the rain." She thought as the strange man suddenly disappeared into the thin air. It was as if the clouds took him away, out of her view.

The noise from the baby's cries woke her from the thought. Their bodies were icy cold, and their eyes were like that of the skies, blue.

The nanny was a young lady in her early twenties, she wasn't married nor had she given birth but she felt their pain as a woman. She couldn't help but wonder where they came from and who the strange man was.

She smiled at the cute face of the babies, signaling them to stop crying. And they did.

"Magdaline!" Another nanny called. "Did I miss something?"

"Nancy! Yes, you did." She replied and gently placed the basket on a wooden table. "A tall, strange man called me earlier, I rushed out to check what was happening, and poof!" She threw her tiny fingers into the air as she described it.

"Prof what?" Nancy questioned, curious to know what happened next.

Magdaline looked around for a minute as if she didn't want anyone else to know. She pinned Nancy's left ear with the tip of her fingers and whispered.

"He disappeared with the clouds."

"What?!" Nancy cried aloud "Are you sure he disappeared?!"
Magdaline quickly cupped her mouth with her hands.

"Shhhh! Sir Fredo might hear you." She warned.
Just then the babies started crying again, diverting the silly nanny's attention.

"Awww! Aren't they cute?" Magdaline cried silently. She's been longing to carry them in her arms the very second she sighted them.

"Don't touch them! Don't you think they could be mysterious creatures? I mean if the man disappeared as you said, shouldn't we call the doctor for tests and checkups? Are they even real?" She stammered with about a hundred questions in a minute. It was clear that Nancy was scared of the babies, but Magdalene wasn't.

"I know they're too cute to be real but what are you scared of." She smiled again at the trembling twins and they reduced their crying, staring into her brown eyes.

Magdaline had this beautiful smile and she was so fond of children that she applied to work with the orphanage after high school. It has been two years that she's been working there and there had been nothing as strange as this rainy day.

Magdaline carried the baby girl to change her wet clothes when something dropped from her back. It was an envelope.
She quickly cuddled the baby softly into her arm to open the envelope. There lay a wet letter in it saying:

Maureen and Moses,
Born out of curses.
Maureen and Moses,
The Crowns of Success.
Innocent is Maureen,
Decent is Moses.
Until they find the fruit of life,
A golden apple.
Will they be free,
To lead their people.
- THE CLOUD QUEEN.

Magdaline's hands shivered on the paper as she read it again and again, not knowing what the letter was trying to convey. Maureen and Moses might be their names. Born out of curses? Maybe they survived death. The sound of crowns and leading of people might mean royalty but the fruit of life; the golden apple? Which golden apple? She asked, placing Maureen on the soft bed and carrying Moses on her shoulder to check if there were any apples but the basket was empty. She gently placed Moses beside his twin on the bed to check the basket properly. Yet, there was nothing left to find. She took out the wet brackets, spreading it in the corridor to dry.

Magdaline changed their clothes, gave them milk in a feeding bottle, and laid them back to sleep. Sir. Fredo came alongside Nancy to check the new babies. He was so mad that Magdaline had let anyone bring any child in. She had to accept it was part of her carelessness. Meanwhile, it wasn't her fault that she was too humane to leave them in the merciless rain.

Showing him the letter would anger him even more so she decided to hide it under a book.

"Call the doctor immediately, those babies might have one or two infections, who knows."

She did exactly as she was told and the doctor arrived just in time to carry a simple checkup on them.

"These babies are hale and healthy, meaning... There's no sign of trauma or exposure, " The doctor said, packing his stethoscope into his suitcase.

"If you notice anything strange or otherwise; maybe of high temperature or fever, please, don't hesitate to take them to the hospital for a thorough examination."

"What exactly are their names?"

"Moses and Maureen."

"Beautiful. I would be back to check on the babies in a week."

"I would look forward to that." Magdaline smiled beautifully as the doctor took his leave. She was happy the babies were infection-free and healthy meaning, they would cause no harm.

After the doctor left, Magdaline fed the babies with milk again. The doctor must have disturbed their beauty sleep while turning their tender bodies from one place to another in the checkup process.

Just then, Sir Fredo walked in. "Where's the register?!"

"Umm... R.. right there, on the table." She pointed anxiously.

The letter... She hadn't had time to tear or burn it yet. She thought as he walked to take the register. Just then, his eyes caught the brown envelope.

"Today's March 15th right? This was sent to this orphanage today, right?" Curiosity laced his voice and it was clear that he was even angrier about why she hid it away from him.

If you haven't noticed, Sir Fredo is the owner of the orphanage. He established it ten years ago before he retired from the American military.

"Why didn't you show me this?! How long were you planning to hide their identities from me? Huh?!" He fired at the poor nanny.

She stopped feeding Maureen, feeling guilty they might send them out because of the letter.

"It was all my fault," she thought, a cloud of tears forming in her sad brown eyes. "I'm so sorry."

"And what is this I'm reading about curses?! This child would bring tears and destruction into this orphanage, I can't keep them! No one would want to adopt them!!"

"Please sir," She quickly knelt holding his feet in tears."let's keep these babies I beg of you."

Her tears watered his shoes as if it would make him grow to change his mind.

"And why should I listen to you, Magdalene? Why do you even care?" He strongly raised her to her heels, in compassion.

The past two years have been a great success since Magdaline had joined to work in his orphanage. He didn't understand why she defended the babies she just met an hour ago.

"I'm a nanny, Sir Fredo. These babies are blessings, they're twins, isn't it enough sign? These children are homeless, I want to keep them... I would keep them if you can't, sir."

"Okay, let's keep them but I would blame you if anything goes wrong." He threatens with a frown as he writes down their names into the register and signs. In approval, he accepted them into his orphanage on that same day.

"Okay, sir..." She wore a bright smile at his words.

He hands her the register and walks out of the room.

Finally, a family would come for their adoption. Finally, Maureen and Moses were two among the thousand babies living in Sir. Fredo's Orphanage. Out of which Maureen was the only girl, others were boys.

For it was a rainy day indeed!
