Chapter 28: No One Else to Blame
Hoseok opened his eyes at about two in the afternoon that day, he sighed and made himself comfortable as he spread his legs open.
One hung from the side of the bed, and the other was bent at the knee as he laid on his right arm, facing the wide windows of his bedroom.
🔞His hand found its way to his crotch and he held onto his hard-on through his sweats. Softly stroking himself, he hummed pleased, hips lightly moving from time to time without a thought.
Eventually his soft moaning filled the quiet room. His eyes remained closed, his grip through the fabric tight as he sought release. Head blank, no thoughts.
He was still not fully awake, but he was getting there. This usually helped clear his foggy head and gave him a jump-start to begin the day right* when he woke up like this. He felt relaxed and energized to face the day afterwards.
You thought you were dreaming until you regained some consciousness and realized those sounds were actually coming from the man laying next to you and were not in your head. Your eyes widened slightly.
Keeping quiet didn't sound right, but what on Earth was he thinking right now? With you sleeping right next to him? You were not a particularly heavy sleeper.🔞
"Um, Hoseok-ah?"
Hobi's eyes flew open as he shrieked and hastily brought handfuls of the covers on top of his lap trying to hide himself. His head instantly snapped to the half closed door, but you weren't there. He was not hearing things, was he?
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw something, more like someone, and looked over his shoulder to the other side of the bed to find you laying right there looking up at him with a mix of surprise and confusion.
"WO-OH, SHIT!" he was so shocked he sat up abruptly and ended up falling off the side of the bed backwards with a roll. Hoseok groaned loudly as he hit his head on the window and landed right on his tailbone.
"Are you okay??" you said crawling over hurriedly to make sure he hadn't hurt himself badly and he panicked when you leaned over the side.
"YES. D-DON'T—W-WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY BED?!" Hoseok demanded anxiously as he saw you coming closer with furrowed eyebrows, filled with concern.
It was too late, he had fallen on his ass, both his legs bent as he barely had enough room for them in between his bed and the window. The tent in his sweats was impossible to miss now.
Hobi stared at you with wild wide-eyes, puffing and panting, heart racing in his agitated chest as he tried to catch his breath after the scare.
"I asked you this morning if I could sleep here, I couldn't sleep a wink all night on my own...you said it was okay" you didn't think you had misheard him, his voice was raspy but clear enough. The corners of your lips drooped.
His mind hurriedly tried to retrieve that memory from somewhere in his head, but he honestly had been so exhausted he couldn't recall a thing.
His face burned bright red as he sprang to his feet filled with embarrassment and you sat back holding an arm out and waving your hand dismissively.
"It's fine, it happens all the time!" you tried to comfort him glancing down only when his hands shot forward to cover himself.
"I can help you if you want" you offered flirtatiously trying to lighten the mood, it wasn't that big of a deal. He swallowed at the provocative words, they didn't help.
"N-no, I-I—" he stuttered nervously still not being able to form one coherent sentence and scurried to his en-suite bathroom. Slamming the door right behind him.
You sat there on the bed completely bewildered, but eventually got up to leave the bedroom and give him some much needed privacy.
While he showered, you wrapped yourself in your robe and went to the kitchen to heat up the hearty brunch you'd prepared to cover for him missing breakfast.
Once the coffee was freshly made, you poured it onto two cups and set them on the kitchen island before taking a seat on a high chair and waiting for him.
Your hands were clasped together on the surface and you bit on your lip nervously. You hadn't meant to cross any lines, you really just badly needed the sleep. Clearly you hadn't thought this through and you had trusted his sleepy decision was conscious.
Hoseok cleared his throat as he walked in warily, his lips were pressed in a line outlining his dimples, he tried to look at you but his eyes kept shifting away. He looked tense and uncomfortable.
"Hob-ah, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to..." your voice trailed off, you didn't know what to say. You just felt bad about what you did. It had been inappropriate to ask in the first place.
"It's okay, don't worry about it. I said it was fine, right?" he couldn't remember, but he knew he could trust you wouldn't lie to him. You were not to blame necessarily, you didn't truly know how tired they were and how deep they slept once they relaxed after being on tour.
"Yeah, but...I shouldn't have. I usually have a really hard time sleeping on my own and I—" you tried to explain to him the severity of your insomnia, even though you couldn't turn back time and fix it.
"It's fine, really" he insisted cutting off your rant and he looked at the food you'd prepared instead with a confused smile.
"What is all of this?"
"Since laying in my bed wasn't working, I ended up getting up to prepare breakfast, but then—" Hobi turned to you grinning amused now. You were adorable, you'd never been so nervous around him before.
Admittedly, you hadn't heard his shrill screams before today either. That was not something he was proud of. These were sides of you that had never come to light as friends, even if you were close and comfortable, there was a line you hadn't crossed.
But that didn't matter much to him in that moment, you were here and you had made breakfast for him and it felt so nice to have you around, to have company while he ate, someone to talk to. To not be alone in this huge apartment with his thoughts.
"Thank you for the food" he said with a little bow of his head when he sat across from you and dug in hungrily. His happy hums of approval made you happy, you were glad your efforts had paid off and it was to his taste.
Hobi stared at you in the eye smiling warmly for a second before looking away. The expression on his face was soft and sweet, his kind eyes made you feel warm inside. Again, you blushed like you never did, what was all this?
There was something else in them, something you could only describe as melancholy. You chose not to mention it, maybe you'd got the wrong impression. You ate quietly instead and kept your thoughts to yourself.
The silence became uncomfortable even when Hobi did his best to get past the awkward moment initially. Something was bothering you too, it seemed, but he didn't dare ask.
"Um, so the manager left a message on my phone. I had called them last night. It looks like no one can come check on my apartment until Monday" you started trying to make some conversation.
"What about the water that's flooding your apartment? Shouldn't that be considered an urgent matter?" he asked with knitted eyebrows, it made no sense they didn't think it was an emergency and needed immediate attention.
"Since it's the weekend and the water flow could be stopped closing the shut-off valve, apparently it can wait" you commented sounding just as outraged. It wasn't even Sunday still, surely someone worked on Saturdays, even if part-time.
"Well, you know, you can stay here until it's fixed. Your snake though, don't let it anywhere near me" he offered with a warning and you laughed airily.
"I'm sure Boa will be just fine without me for a couple days" you giggled at his sudden uneasiness. His face contorted in a mix of aversion and fear. You knew reptiles were not for everyone, but it was funny to see his reaction.
"Anyway" you said softly, looking down at your empty bowl as you played with your chopsticks, "I don't want to bother you, it would probably be best if I stayed at a hotel tonight."
"Oh. It's not a problem though, I mean it" Hobi insisted feeling a little disappointed. Was it because of how he reacted?
He was caught off-guard and was ashamed, but you didn't make him feel bad about it. You were in fact very understanding and he felt bad for having yelled at you.
It's not like you hadn't seen him aroused before, and completely naked at that. It was just really unexpected, he thought he was by himself in the privacy of his room. He had felt way too vulnerable when he saw you there thinking you were nowhere near.
"I just think it would be best, I was actually planning to go out to a bar tonight" you explained feeling a little self-conscious, knowing he'd understand what you were implying.
His face immediately changed at your words. You were going out to hook up, you didn't want to stay here because you'd rather go to a hotel to fuck some stranger.
"I see" Hoseok muttered bitterly, "thank you for the food, it was very good."
He meant it, but with the tone of his voice it sounded insincere. It hurt to think you couldn't spend one weekend with him, that again something else, sex this time, was more important to you.
You didn't have to stay though, you were just friends, he shouldn't be upset about you going on with your life. This was nothing new, it was what you always did. Maybe he wasn't doing as well as he thought getting over what happened between you two.
"What is it?" you asked miffed by his sudden change in attitude, you shook your head in disbelief, "you don't want to sleep with me, do you?"
Your question rubbed him the wrong way after the incident in the morning. No, he didn't want to. He had never wanted just sex. He didn't want to make that mistake again.
"No. I don't want to sleep with you" his voice was low and cutting, filled with what sounded like disdain. His words hurt more than you would have expected.
You didn't feel like you could be intimate with him again given that you felt things for him and you knew how he felt about casual anyway. But you didn't understand where that reaction had come from and you couldn't think of anything else.
You didn't mean the question, however, you were annoyed that he had an issue with your decision. His answer was so harsh that it left you feeling like the problem was with you instead of due to his own choices.
"It's settled then. I'll go get my things and leave you now, don't you worry" you managed to say sternly without your voice breaking and rushed out of the kitchen before you could tear up.
You'd spend the rest of the day mopping the floors of your apartment to get rid of the water and then get ready to leave for the night. Being out of his way wouldn't be a problem.
With your clothes bunched up in your arms, you came back walking resolutely towards the front door and kicked off your slippers angrily.
Hobi observed from the kitchen's threshold, frozen in place, as you opened the door to see yourself out without having changed or even put shoes on. You simply had thrown them on the messy pile with the rest of your belongings.
He was left standing there, feeling like an idiot for the umpteenth time, broken hearted over a woman who he had never even dated to begin with. With a knot in his aching chest and an overwhelming feeling of despair, he thought maybe he actually was one.
It couldn't be just a feeling at this point, he kept setting himself up for failure. Came out feeling sad and hurt, there was no one but him to blame.
