Chapter 27: Insomnia, My Old Friend
After nine months, you were back home at last. It had been an interesting experience, you'd never flown a band before, mostly executives, diplomatics and various rich people that were not necessarily celebrities.
No one had found out about your night with Hoseok, which was a relief, so you were hoping they were left with a good impression of you and would consider hiring you in the future. It would certainly be nice to have a more stable client that flies frequently.
It's not like you didn't have enough work, but they were mostly people who hired you for a specific occasion and then didn't call you again for a long time. You were not an exclusive private pilot to anyone really, clients referred you to other clients and that's how you got hired all year long.
When you stepped into your apartment, it was gelid and you wondered why the heating system hadn't warmed up prior to your arrival. It was set to automatically turn on, your friend who took care of your snake had seemed to forget to set it up last time they came.
You groaned as you headed to the bedroom to check on the control pad and the first thing you noticed was how you stepped in with a splash. Turning the lights on, you looked down at the flooded floor and then it all made sense.
The hot water system was broken and it looked like somewhere a pipe had burst. You had no idea where and you were too tired to find out. It was three in the morning, no one was going to answer even if you called for help.
You left a voice mail on the building manager's phone and padded away with your now squishy slippers. You sighed and debated what to do, you could go to a hotel, but going out at this time of the night on your bike to find a place wasn't a tempting idea.
Instead, you decided to put on your shoes once more and head down the hallway to ring your neighbor's doorbell and maybe ask to crash on his couch. You'd figure out what to do in the morning when you were not sleepy.
Hobi had just finished his skin routine when he heard the door and furrowed his eyebrows with a confused pout as he stared at himself in the mirror. He put on a robe over his t-shirt and sweats and walked to the main door to check the spyhole.
When he saw it was you, he curiously opened the door with a puzzled look on his face.
"Hey Cap, 'sup?" he said playfully and you stared up at him with an amused smile. He looked adorable with his hair sticking up as a cute character headband held it off his face.
"Hob-ah, hey. My apartment is flooded, I think a pipe of the heating system broke and it's freezing. I was wondering if I could crash on your couch for the night" you looked up at him with the cutest puppy eyes and he nodded without thinking about it for more than a second.
"Of course! That's terrible, coming back home to find out the bad news. Come in" he took a step aside and motioned for you to walk inside the apartment.
"Ah, thank you so much! I actually need to get some clothes to sleep in and my toiletries, but I'll be right back. I don't want to keep you awake!" you squealed happily and ran down the hall to your apartment once more.
Hoseok chuckled at the cuteness. He wondered if you thought he would not be willing to help you, since you didn't come prepared. Admittedly he had been colder to you these last few months, but it was not about you, he was trying to protect himself.
After three months he was slowly coming to terms with the idea that your night together didn't lead anywhere. He had realized he didn't want you out of his life though, usually he distanced himself from women when things didn't turn out because it hurt to stay in touch.
This was not the usual situation though, one thing was going out from the first time with dating in mind and another very different one was becoming friends and then developing feelings after months of knowing each other.
He had had six months to get to know you prior to your one night stand and he was hoping he'd be able to let the hurt go eventually. Your friendship wasn't going back to being the same, he had to keep a certain distance, he didn't feel right flirting back either, but he'd be around if you needed a friend.
It took less than five minutes and he saw your door open and you run up to him wearing your silky sleeping robe. He got flashbacks to that one night in Las Vegas and felt his face blush, but quickly composed himself. This one time you were wearing something underneath, at least your neckline was covered.
"Ready?" he asked with a lip smile and you nodded and walked in as he stood aside once more with his arm extended so you'd follow.
"Oh, I like how you've decorated the place" you commented as you looked around. His style was pretty relaxed, stylish but also eclectic. It was very him.
"Thank you" he replied smiling pleased and walked down the hallway, you stood in the middle of the living room looking at him lost. The couch was right there and you didn't want to step into the more private area of his home.
"Follow me, I have a couple guest rooms set for when family visits. Did you think I was going to let you sleep on the couch?" he giggled turning back to you and waving his arm once more so you'd come with him.
You walked behind him as you looked around at the walls covered in decor, photographs and art. It made you smile unconsciously, it was all Hoseok. Despite being tight on time, he had at least managed to put together something homey.
Your apartment was decorated, but it felt cold and unwelcoming compared to his. Maybe it was because it lacked framed photographs of family, gifts from loved ones, little knick-knacks and just all these things that made this place warm.
You were a very social person, you did have a lot of acquaintances, but close friends? Just a handful that you didn't get to get together with a lot. As for your family, you were in contact with your father, technically, but you talked to him maybe once a year.
When it came to your mother and your maternal grandparents, you really didn't want anything to do with them. They still thought your 'choices' were dishonorable and disgusting. You were who you were and if they couldn't accept you liked women and men, they needed to stay away.
Better pretend you didn't exist and disown you, at this point you didn't care. You didn't want anything from them, you had everything you needed and did just fine on your own without your family's help.
"Here's your room, there's clean sheets on the bed already, it's always prepared in case someone shows up. Towels are in the closet and more blankets if you are cold. The heating system is on though, so it should warm up some more soon. There's a bathroom two doors down."
"Thank you, Hoseok-ah, truly" you said bowing your head gratefully.
"Oh and if you get hungry or want anything to drink, feel free to take anything you want from the kitchen. Good night, Cap~*" Hobi said smiling tiredly and headed to his bedroom.
"Good night, Hob-ah" you replied closing the door, taking off your robe and getting in bed right away. You were exhausted and couldn't wait to get some rest.
Even as warm and comfortable as you were in this place and this bed, hours passed and you still couldn't fall asleep. Your sleeping pills seemed to have had no effect other than making you feel groggy.
When the sun was out, you decided to get up and take a quick shower before you changed and headed to the kitchen. Maybe you could prepare some breakfast for both of you, cook something nice to return Hoseok's favor of letting you sleep here.
You looked up some recipes online, you were not the greatest cook, but you could manage if you had instructions to follow. There was plenty of time to whip something up considering the time you both went to bed at, so you went out to get the ingredients when the markets opened first thing.
After a few hours and a few mishaps just from being sleepy, you had made dakjuk, bossam, ggaeran jim²* and seasoned steamed rice to go with it all. You left everything waiting on the kitchen island and went to the living room to sit on an armchair that faced outside.
The headache that made your head throb wasn't going away, but you had to endure it, you didn't have a choice really. Closing your eyes for a second, you tried to relax, it was still early, you had calculated Hoseok was going to get up around noon.
The members had mentioned once they were home and after a tour, they passed out for a good portion of the following days. It was fortunate they had arrived in Seoul early in the morning of a Saturday, at least that gave them a couple long nights of sleep.
They all tried to get enough rest, but from what you had heard, it seemed like they were lucky if they got four hours of sleep. Hoseok seemed to be the one with the most consistent sleeping schedule, he went to bed early in an effort to recover as much energy as he possibly could.
After a couple hours, the food had clearly ran cold and you heard something coming from the hallway. You got up and peeked down it, but it soon became quiet again. It didn't look like he was going to get up any time soon, so you decided to go back to bed to keep trying to at least doze off.
When you walked past a door that was previously closed but now was left ajar, you couldn't help but look inside curiously. It seemed to be Hoseok's bedroom. He was laying on one side of the bed despite having it all to himself and the spot next to his looked rather tempting.
You were dying not being able to get any shut-eye and in that moment you'd give anything to get it. More desperate than embarrassed, you walked in the room trying not to make any loud noises that could disturb Hobi and poked his arm.
He seemed to have got up briefly, to use the bathroom, you assumed, and you were hoping he wasn't deeply asleep just yet.
"Hoseok-ah" you whispered and he didn't even flinch.
Next you tried shaking his shoulder just a little bit.
"Hob-ah" you whined in a tone that was only a bit louder than a whisper. This time round, he shifted and groaned. You called his name again hoping he was somewhat awake now.
"What?" he mumbled hoarsely, not even bothering to open his eyes.
"Can I sleep here? I couldn't get any sleep on my own" you pouted as if that would help you, but he was still not even looking at you.
Hobi hugged his pillow tigther and pulled the open covers over himself as he curled on his spot.
"Mm, sure" he muttered and cleared his dry throat after hearing himself.
"Thank you, thank you!" you answered excitedly, bowing repeatedly, and hopped into bed right away. Finally, you were going to get a proper rest!
He smiled in his sleep at the sound of your voice and, in no time, you were both dead to the world around you, utterly drained.

* ~ is used to add cuteness to written speech in Korean, so by adding this I was just trying to imply Hobi was talking cutely to her, hehe. He uses it a bunch when he writes comments for ARMY on Weverse.

Its various uses are:
1) As an exclamation for calling out someone's name or voicing the last word/make a syllable really long, especially in repetition as ~~~~~
2) A meaningless link between words or phrases.
3) As a light-hearted full-stop in place of a period, exclamation point or a "..." sort of ending.
It keeps things light and cheery and, as a result, helps bolster aegyo-charged text characters like nunusseum (^^) or to appear somewhat sing-songy, to impart a sense of pleasant dialoguing.
