Chapter 7 - You & I
Three months have passed since the break-up of Mae and June. It had been miserable for both of them. They would meet in their barkada meetings and other special occasions but they would never talk to each other.
Mae and June went back to being strangers. It was difficult for them but they didn't know what to do. June didn't want to hurt Mae more so he thought that giving her the space that she wanted would set things straight. Unfortunately, it did not.
It was the birthday of June when he decided to take a leap of faith. He knew that something has always been missing in his life ever since Mae broke up with him. He needed to do something to complete the puzzle of his life and there's only one person who could help him do that.
"Happy birthday June!" The whole barkada greeted him the moment he entered the restaurant where his birthday celebration was held.
"Thank you guys!" He said as he looked for that one person that he needed to talk to the most – Mae.
"Mae, can we talk?" June asked and Mae wasn't able to hide the shock that she had felt upon hearing June's question. She gave him a small nod as an answer and followed him to one of the corner tables in the restaurant.
The two of them were silent as they sat in front of each other. June wanted to say a lot of things to Mae but he didn't know where to start. Mae was starting to get uneasy with the silence so she decided to break the ice.
"Do you really have anything to say?" Mae coldly asked. June met her eyes but she looked away.
"Mae, can we start over?" Mae looked up to check if June was serious. She wanted to give a snarky remark but upon seeing the look on June's face, every word was lost in translation.
"I know it sounds stupid. I placed you on the sidelines for a very long time and when you gave me a chance, I blew it all away. I'm not making any promises and I don't expect you to believe whatever I say but Mae, please hear me out." June said as he held Mae's hands. It was shaking from nervousness and June's hands were starting to get clammy but Mae didn't mind. What mattered at that time was what June was going to say.
"Mae, I quit. I'm going to stop acting and from now on, nothing can come between us. If you'll give me this chance, I swear to God that no one could separate us. What's more important to me is what you and I have." Mae didn't know how to react. June sounded like he ripped some lyrics from a random love song when he talked but it felt like he was actually saying the truth. She didn't want to get hurt but she knew that she would be lying if she said that she didn't want to be with June anymore.
"How about your dreams then?" Mae can't help but ask. She knew that June dreamt of being known for his talents. How was he supposed to do that if he's going to quit?
"Mae, my dream is to spend the rest of my life with you. If acting would be the one that would stop me from fulfilling my dream, then I'm more than willing to give it up for you."
"But-"
"No buts Mae. I may be giving up something that has been a big part of my life but this time, I would not be giving up on you. If I need to court you again just to show how much I love you, I'll be more than willing to do so."
"Wait. What did you just say?" Mae asked.
"I said I was going to court you again."
"No. The one after that."
"Uhh. I love you?" June hesitantly said.
"Is that a question or a statement?" Mae asked and June was getting more nervous.
"Damn it. I love you Mae! Okay?!" June shouted which got the attention of everyone. Mae chuckled upon seeing June's reaction as she said, "I love you too, June. And that's what matters."
