Chapter 6 - Long Way Down

A few weeks have passed and Mae and June tried their best to make their relationship work. June started to adjust his schedule to make time for Mae. At first, everything was going well between them. They were back to Mae and June that the barkada knew – cheesy and sweet at the same time. Everyone believed that it was going to work this time. But it seemed like fate wasn't on their side. Their situation lasted for a few days only.

It was the birthday of Mae and he promised to be there for her. He wanted to make up for all of the special occasions that he has missed but due to some circumstances, their shoot lasted longer. He knew that he couldn't make it anymore so he just greeted Mae through text. After a few minutes, his phone rang. It was Mae.

"Mae, I'm so sorry." June started. He expected Mae to say something but was surprised to hear Monica's voice instead.

"Damn you June! Is your shoot that important compared to the birthday of your girlfriend who's actually drunk right now, huh?" Mae asked him.

"Wait, what?" June asked in return. He was surprised to hear what Monica has said and he wasn't even sure if he heard her correctly.

"Do I really have to repeat myself June?" Monica asked. June wasn't able to answer due to shock. Monica took that as a cue to continue.

"Fine. For your satisfaction, I'm going to repeat what I just said. Your girlfriend is drunk right now, thanks to you."

"Damn it. Why did you let her get drunk?!" June screamed from the other line when everything sank in. If he was there with Mae, this would not have happened.

"Damn you too, June. It was your fault why she's acting like this. Don't you think putting her on the sidelines for nine whole months is a little bit too much?" Monica asked which made June shut up. He wanted to say something but the director called for him already.

"You promised to be better to her but what happened? It all lasted for a few days. I hope you rot in hell June. Mae doesn't deserve a guy like you." Monica said as she ended the call.

June wasn't able to focus on the shoot so the director had to cut it short. Paulina tried to talk him but he ran straight for his car. He drove as fast as he could to the bar where Mae's birthday was held. As much as he wanted to break traffic rules, he tried his best to calm himself down. He needed to think straight when he talks to Mae.

He arrived in the bar just in time. The whole barkada was planning to leave already and they didn't know where to bring Mae. They were talking about it when Tristan saw June.

"June is here. I guess it's about time for the two of them to fix their issues now." Tristan suggested which got different reactions from the group. Monica was against it. In her case, she knew that the relationship of Mae and June has nowhere to go but down. She didn't want her friend to hurt more because of June.

"Mae, let's go." June said as he tried to help Mae in standing up. Mae was mumbling incoherent words at that time but when she heard June's voice, she suddenly woke up to her senses.

"Don't touch me! You don't have the right to do this to me!" She shouted, her eyes flaring from anger.

"Mae, please. Let's just talk when you're sober."

"No June. You listen to me. Whatever this is, let's just stop." Mae said which caused the whole barkada to fall silent. They weren't expecting this kind of scenario to happen today. After all, they should be celebrating Mae's birthday right?

"W-what do you mean?" June stuttered. He has a hunch on what Mae was talking about but he didn't want to believe it just yet.

"Let's break up June. This relationship is bound to end anyway." Mae said without even looking at June. She was just staring at a blank space the whole that she was talking.

"Y-you're kidding right?" June can't help but ask. He felt his world crumbling down because of what Mae has said. All this time, he was holding on to the fact that he had Mae by his side.

"Why would I even joke about this? June, let's end whatever we have right now cause honestly, I can't keep up with what's happening anymore. I guess we're better off as friends. No commitments, no compromises and no one is left behind." Mae said as she stood up and left the bar without even looking back.
