Chapter 3 - Tell Me a Lie

Mae and June started off their relationship in good terms. Their friends and families were happy for them but everything changed because of a stupid offer that June got.

"Someone asked me to audition as a commercial model." June nonchalantly said while they were having lunch in a restaurant along Maginhawa. Thinking that it was just a joke, Mae started laughing like crazy.

"Mae, I'm serious." June said and when Mae looked at him, she knew that he really was serious. She then stopped laughing and thought of how to absorb the news that June has just dropped.

"Are you going to accept their offer?" Mae asked, still torn between being proud and shocked. She couldn't bring herself to believe what June has said. Yes, June got the looks and built of a model but never in her wildest dreams did she think that he would really be offered to be one.

"I'm still thinking about it. But opportunities like these come once in a lifetime." June answered and Mae felt that his decision has been made even before he told her the news. Just to show June that he has her support, Mae put on a smile and tried her best to look happy for him.

"Go for it June. It would be a shame to throw an opportunity like that away."

"Seriously?" June asked in disbelief. He thought that Mae would act like the over-protective girlfriend when he breaks the news.

"Positive. Just make sure that you won't look too handsome on that shoot or else I'm going to tie you in chains!" Mae joked and just like that, they were back to the old Mae and June – the couple that started out as friends and joked over the little things.

Months passed by and June started getting offers from different companies. His first commercial stood out so much to the point that even a talent scout from a television company asked him to audition for one of the minor roles in the teleserye that their company will be producing in a few months time. When June asked Mae regarding this, she just told him what she said before: "It would be a shame to throw an opportunity like that away."

June reluctantly accepted the offers that he got. He felt like he was being unfair to Mae already. The times that were supposedly set for their dates or getaways were pushed aside. He wasn't able to be there for Mae during her birthday and he even missed their anniversary. Every time that he tries to make it up to her, another shoot comes and it seemed like it makes everything worse.

When June tried to explain to Mae, she cut him off at once. It was as if she knew what was going to happen anyway – him trying to make it up to her and her waiting in vain.

"Mae, I'm sorry for everything..." June said when he and Mae finally had the chance to see each other. Mae looked at him and just gave him a small nod. What was there to say anyway? That it was okay even if they both know that it's not? It's the most common lie that any person could have said and Mae didn't want to join the bandwagon.

"Mae, I promise to make it up to you."

"Didn't you say that a few months ago?" Mae wasn't able to stop herself from rebutting. She was fed up with June's broken promises already.

"I know and I'm sorry for breaking all of those promises. It's just that my schedule-"

"Yes, your schedule will always be at fault." Mae finished the sentence for June. She then looked at him and continued, "Do you still have anything else to say or lie about? I just want to get this dinner over with."

June was taken aback with what Mae has said. He didn't expect her to say those words to him. He didn't know that Mae was keeping all of these thoughts to herself.

"You know that I'm being paired with another actress right?" June started. He then took a deep breath before he continued, "It's just that they wanted me to promote with her. To make the team-up work, they need to tell the public that I'm still single. So is it okay if..." June wasn't able to finish what he was saying anymore. Mae stood up from where she was sitting, looked at June in the eye and said "Sure. Let's tell them a lie. We're just friends. Nothing more, nothing less. If this dinner is done, I have to go."
