Grace's secret

After having an horrible nightmare that consisted out of people stealing my food without me being able to do anything about it, I woke up with a terrible headache feeling like I had just been punched by the incredible hulk himself.

I groaned loudly, sitting up slowly on what appeared to be a bed. "I could really, really use some tea right now." I whimpered, pressing my eyes shut. "A hug from Misha Collins would suffice too."

"You're awake." Bucky's voice echoed through the room, sounding like he was a few feet away from where I was.

"No I'm sleeping, leave me alone." I grumbled, plumping back down on the soft bed. I opened my eyes and turned to my side, watching Bucky who was sitting on a chair opposite of me.

"How bad was it?" Even though I couldn't remember a thing from last night, I recognized the symptoms that always occurred after the incident.

"You were out for 2 days." Bucky answered, glancing at me. He was wearing his black cap again, his mid length brown hair reaching till his shoulders. He was wearing his usual clothes also, together with the gloves.

"2 days?" My eyes widened. "Man, I'm becoming like Sleeping Beauty." I murmured, laying my head down on the cushion which smelt like cats. "Hey, James, do me a favour; next time that happens again, please do kiss me. Maybe it might help."

Bucky scoffed but I swear I saw a faint smile forming on his lips. "I've gotten us somewhat further down the road. We're near Frankfurt." He chose not to say anything about the kissing which was a pity.

"I'm more than glad that we're gone from that house, those dolls were giving me the creeps. One more minute and I swear I would've ran to the closest supermarket, bought some salt and thrown it at them while reciting an exorcism."

First Bucky chuckled softly but then he stood up, walking towards me and then sitting down on the bed next to my waist. He glanced down at me with a concerned look in his eyes. "What happened, Grace?"

"Oh, you know, it's nothing special. I was just turning into another version of the hulk mixed with some of Deadpool's looks, Magneto's sense of evil and-"

"Grace." Bucky interrupted me, his eyes narrowing slightly.

"What?" I said but then noticed the serious look in his eyes which made me swallow in fright. "Look, James-"

"Bucky."

"James." I propped myself up on my elbows. "It's a long story." I said while looking at his emerald eyes. "That usually translates to 'I don't want to talk about it so please don't ask me again.'" I tried to sit up further but Bucky stopped me by holding my upper arm in his right hand.

"Please let go." I begged only he didn't, he kept on looking straight into my eyes with his demanding ones. Knowing that he wasn't going to stop I sighed deeply. "What about we make a deal?" I proposed. Bucky raised his eyebrows slightly but didn't say anything. "I tell you what happened back there and you tell me why you're helping me."

"No."

"Then there's no deal and you have to let me go." I tried to sit up but Bucky pushed me down yet again. "James! That's not fair, you're way stronger than I am!"

I tried to wriggle my way out from under his hand but only managed to fall back down on the bed with a throbbing head. "Fine." I growled at which Bucky finally lifted his hand from my shoulder. "You want the long version or the short one?"

"Short one will do."

"Fine." I glared at him, disappointed that I didn't get to tell the whole story now. The specifics are what makes a story good. "I was three years old when it happened, an accident in which my brother was also involved. He didn't make it but I did, only I needed some serious operations which included a blood transfer. Since I was on the verge of death and normal treatment couldn't safe me anymore, my parents decided to go all yellow eyed demon on me and injected me with a mutant's blood hoping that it might help."

Bucky only nodded wearily.

"Mutant's blood is different than normal blood, which means that it did things to the cells of my body that couldn't be reversed. In the end my body started to neglect the parts that the mutant's blood had changed, destroying its own self in the hope to survive." I grasped the few syringes that Bucky had laid down on the table in front of me. "This, this medicine is the only thing that stops my body from attacking itself."

I glanced at them, feeling dread building up inside of me when I saw how few were left. "And I've only got 4 left." I bit on my lip.

"Can't we buy more?"

"They can't be bought because my parents made them their selves." I sighed, sitting up and laying my head down on the palms of my hands.

"You don't have the recipe?"

"Well, my parents weren't exactly planning on dying so they didn't write it down for me." I huffed, glancing around the room we were in. This one seemed modern, probably a second house to someone very rich. Then an idea popped into my head. "But I've got an idea who might have the recipe."

"Who?"

"Hank McCoy, an old friend of my parent's. He helped make the formula." My eyes lit up at the idea of seeing him again. "He's not too far from here, he lives somewhere in the south of Germany in a town called Wickendale when he's not with the other mutants at Xavier's school."

"I don't know." Bucky sighed and looked away. He probably had it all written out on how he planned to get from here to Budapest.

"C'mon! It's not like he can just e-mail the formula because we wouldn't have the equipment to make such a thing. He has this huge laboratory with all the toys, it's like a heaven for scientists." My hands were thrilled to be able to do something scientific.

"Is he a mutant?" Bucky helped me up to my feet, his right arm latched around my waist to hoist me up.

"Uuuhm, yeah?" I frowned up at him when I was on my feet. Bucky seemed to ponder, biting on his lip and looking out of the window. "He's a good guy, he's not in the brotherhood of mutants, he's with Charles Xavier."

Bucky didn't seem to mind that though. It was because he was very careful with people that he didn't trust them that fast. He always seemed to take a while before he could maybe trust someone a little. Except for me.

"He's a good guy, Buck. I trust him." It was probably the first time I called him by his real name. Well, real isn't really the right word since James is his first name but it's the name he always uses. Because of that he glanced down at me, surprised of the fact that I finally called him that.

He ran his hand through his hair, probably overthinking. "Do you know how to get there?"

"I can't believe we're doing this!" I cheered as I practically ran inside the restaurant.

"It's only for the medicine, when we have them we're going, understood?" Bucky followed me half-heartedly.

"I know, I know." I sighed and plumped down in the booth. After having looked at the menu I decided to have a cheeseburger menu, that being the only thing somewhat decent that they had there.

Bucky glanced up at me due to my sudden change of mood, eyeing me suspiciously. His observation was interrupted though by the news, there was a tv hanging in the corner of the restaurant which was now showing how the Avengers were breaking into a HYDRA facility somewhere in Germany.

"Damn, freedom is at it again." I said as I took a sip of my drink. "God bless America."

"Freedom?"

"Popsicle." I looked at Bucky instead of the TV, enjoying the look of confusion in his eyes. "You know, Captain America." I chuckled. Bucky nodded with a small smile, glancing at the TV again.

"It seems that The Avengers are attacking a HYDRA facility, the organisation behind the three helicarriers' crash a few months back in Washington." The reporter said. "If this is the last one or their main base we do not know."

"Oooh, Thor is there also." My eyes widened and a smile appeared on my lips.

"I wonder why they're attacking there." Bucky frowned as his eyes continued to stare at the flat screen.

"Does it matter? It looks awesome, they're kicking HYDRA's asses." Then the screen showed how Captain took down several agents with one throw of his shield and kicked another down. "Quite literally." I chuckled. "Sweet, sweet revenge." I leaned on the booth lazily, taking another sip of my drink.

"I should be helping them." Bucky sighed while he bit on his lip.

"Go ahead then." I raised my eyebrows. "Nobody is stopping you."

Bucky looked at me for a moment until he turned his attention back to the tv and watched how some kind of shield broke down from around the facility.

"I do wonder where the x-men are, they could easily help them." I said while taking another sip of my drink. "Probably too busy with searching for Eric aka Magneto to try and turn him good again, which they will probably fail in."

Bucky hummed in response, probably not even listening to me. He was rather focused on Captain America who was now on the big screen.

"You a fanboy or something?"

"What?" Bucky turned towards me again.

"Well, you keep glowering at Steve Rogers there, it's gettin' kind of obvious." I chuckled while flopping another fry into my mouth. "You know, I don't judge. He's got a god-like body, not to mention that he's also just as adorable as a golden retriever."

Bucky didn't seem to understand what I was getting it but he was kind of intrigued at how I was looking at him. "How about we make a deal?" I leaned forward. "You get cap and I get Thor."

Bucky then realized what I was getting at and practically choked on his own breath. He coughed for some time but I kept on looking at him with one eyebrow raised. "No." Bucky said between some coughs.

"Why not?" I chuckled and tried to pat him on his back. "It's a perfect deal."

"Sometimes, Grace Adams, I wonder how you can be some important scientist that has the government and one of the most dangerous organisations after her." Bucky rubbed some of the tears that had fallen from his eyes due to the coughing away with his hands.

"And that without being captured ever again." I smiled proudly, following the movement of his hands. "As a matter of fact, I also wonder how you, James, manage to still keep everything about yourself hidden from me. It's getting quite suspicious to say the least."

"You know some things."

"Apart from the fact that you have a man-crush on Captain America, not much." I laughed when Bucky scoffed again. Something caught my eye though as I was watching his hands that were covered by his gloves. Beneath his left glove I saw a sliver of silver coming from underneath the leather.

"He just reminds me of someone is all." Bucky mumbled. If I hadn't been so distracted by the metal that was showing I would've commented.

"James, what's that?" I frowned while reaching for his left hand, completely forgetting about what the news was showing or the conversation we were having.

"Nothing." He pulled up his sleeve quickly and stood up from the booth abruptly, grasping his backpack and jacket. "We have to go."

"James?!" I protested and tried to reach for his left hand.

"It's nothing!" He yelled, startling everyone in the restaurant whose heads soon all turned towards us. Bucky shifted uncomfortably under all their gazes and above all, mine that were looking at him as if he had offended me.

He swallowed loudly and waited till all the attention was redirected towards everyone's own conversations. "We need to hurry before they catch our trail again." He said and then left.
