Chapter 8

We move our chairs closer together as he starts to tell a short story.

“When I was little, I used to play with this kid named Kacchan. On some days we were the best of friends, and some days he was tired of me. He said it was just because I’m too immature or too sensitive that sometimes he wants a break from it all, which I didn’t mind. We were best friends since birth, but when we were 4, his quirk came. Mine didn’t. Next thing I knew he never wanted to be seen near me again.” Midoriya sighs while taking his eyes off me.

I nudged him with my shoulder. “So why are you called Deku?” His eyes returned to mine as he sighs again. “That's what he used to call me. I called him Kacchan, and he called me Deku. It basically means useless or good for nothing.” I mouth an “Oh.” as Midoriya puts his head on my shoulder.

My cheeks reddened. “I don’t think you're useless.”

“Hmm, you’re probably just saying that to make me feel better, but I’ll take the compliment anyway.” Midoriya eyes the scar on my left eye. “How’d you get that?” I look down at his face and shake my head. “I don’t know. My sister said one of the workers fell and their cup of tea splashed on me.” Midoriya nods, patting my bi-colored hair softly.

“Is it my turn for a question now?” I ask jokingly and Midoriya chuckles. I never realized how he laughed before. He says “Ask away,” as I think for a moment. “Why’d All Might adopt you?” Midoriya takes his head off my shoulder. “That kinda goes into the other long story.” I nod as I put his head back on my shoulder.

Moments pass as I say another question. “What’s for dinner?” This made Midoriya snort. “Sorry, don't know.” He laughs again and I join in. “I’ve got a question, you don’t have to answer if it's too personal though,” I say it's fine to ask.

“Why’d you try to sneak out of your castle?” I hesitate before telling him the reason, but before I could, he grabs the dark red book from the last chapter and opens it to a page. “What are you-?” I ask before he grabs pieces of my red hair and starts to do what I believe is braiding hair. He says to answer if I want, he just wanted me to feel more comfortable about it. A half-smile appears on my face as blush seeps from my cheeks.

“I was always curious about everything when I was younger. Being stuck inside a large castle with only things to study doesn't make for a very good childhood. I’d heard stories about my grandmother and her frivolous adventures throughout Jyne. Even if they were just fables, that’s what made me so interested in exploring the world, but my parents wouldn’t ever let me go outside the castle unless it was something important like greeting a suitor or new knights being trained and I’d have to supervise. Nothing in that castle gave me hope that there was a world out there where people laughed and cried at silly things or had wonderful new experiences every new day.” I cleared my throat as I finished and eyed the boy who was looking up at me with a wondrous gaze.

“Once upon a time, there was a boy who wanted to view the ocean and fought every chance he got to do so. Amongst all the delays in his plans, the clear blue water was in his hands, playing with the shells he found. He never would’ve made it without the help of his friends who stood by his side and he did the same.” Midoriya exhaled at the end and moved away from my shoulder, now sitting in front of me. “The moral of the story is that no matter what your dreams are, seeing the ocean, exploring the world, or even just being happy, the best way to achieve them is with friends along the way, helping with every step!” He jumps up out of his chair and runs to an aisle. He comes back with a mirror that was only a bit bigger than my hand and holds it up to my face. I eye the braid on my left side, tied with twigs put together. I hadn’t even noticed that he finished when I was speaking.

Midoriya sits back in his chair, putting the small mirror on the table. He grabs the dark yellow book and places it between the small space of our chairs. “What I’m saying is that I’m changing our deal from earlier. It’s not necessarily a deal anymore but, I’ll help you journey Jyne.” My eyes were open wide once he finished. “Are you sure? Don’t you have hunter thingies to do?” The other boy laughs at “Hunter thingies”, and nods quickly. “Well that too, but you never finished the book. Hunters travel all over Jyne all the time! Basically, by helping me, I help you!” We both look at each other with eagerness in our eyes. In my head were fireworks popping off, a silly dance and tune in my head, and my excitement was hard to contain.

I laugh happily with Midoriya for quite a while before calming down. “Thank you,” echoes the large room as Midoriya nods with glee. “Anything for a friend!”

A friend?

“Yeah, a friend.”

Snooze I haven't been able to write much sorry bros
