twelve.
Phil felt a warm hand wrap in his it tugging him away from his task. He instantly knew it was Dan. No one else has that warm of skin. Yanking his gaze away from his bike he ran with Dan in an utter confusion.
"Dan." Phil stumbled behind the boy who's mind seemed to be in another world.
He stopped abruptly making Phil slam into his back huffing a groan. They were standing behind the library in front of a bright garden.
"Dan. What the hell?" Phil yanked his arm away crossing his arms, "I was going to go to the grocery store."
Dan turned around his eyes squinting from the sun.
You know how people say that brown eyes are boring? Yeah that's complete and utter bullshit. There was nothing boring about them. The way the light caught the usual dark brown making it transform into a golden hue. How the color seemed to swirl around in a blaze of purity.
"I wanted to show you something." Dan smiled and held out his hand.
Phil shook his head, "tell me."
Dan turned around and walked through the garden dragging his hand on the flowers as he passed making them bend under the pressure. He walked up to a white gazebo and sat down on a blue blanket.
Phil proceeded cautiously unfolding his arms to see a ton of daisies littered around the small inclosure.
"Fuck off." Phil laughed looking at Dan patting a spot across from him.
He dropped his arm, "what?"
"No." Phil laughed even more, "just-just put this all away." He turned away and began to walk before a hand once again grabbed him. This time it wrapped around his arm and spun him around.
"Why are you leaving?" Dan asked. He was shorter than Phil, easily, and seemed so innocent with his eyebrows pulled up and cheeks flushed.
Phil looked up so he didn't have to look at his eyes anymore, "because this is dumb."
"I'm doing something nice for you?" Dan mumbled before raising his voice, "can't I do something nice?"
"You- but this is not me." Phil gestured to the gazebo, "I'm not some John Green fairy tale. I don't do the whole cliché thing."
"What if I do?" Dan folded his arms, "and what if I wanted to thank for letting me stay over last night?"
"Then just say thank you." Phil locked his eyes with Dan and almost felt bad. Almost. This was incredibly dumb and cheesy.
"I'm not a 'just say thank you' kinda guy." Dan lifted out his hand again, "now take my damn hand and let me spoil you for one fucking day."
Phil rolled his eyes and let Dan take his hand pulling him to the gazebo,
"Now, I got some of your favorite flowers and this blanket that happens to be your favorite color." Dan drops Phil's hand and sits down on the blanket.
Phil nods, "thanks," trying to sound thankful but it came across a little sarcastic.
"Oh, I also got this." Dan dug through his pocket and pulled out a package of cigarettes.
Phil smiled and took it, it's not like he didn't have another carton in his pocket but hey, he'll take it, "thank you." Phil said again but this time he meant it and Dan picked up on that. He straightened his back and fiddled with a flower.
"This is actually quite nice." Phil reassures Dan even though he still doesn't understand any of it.
"I also brought my instant camera but I'm sure that'll be too much." Dan mocked and laughed under his breath holding the small white box in his hands.
Phil plucked a cigarette out of the carton and placed it between his lips, "it would."
Dan held out his camera and snapped a quick picture anyway, "I don't care." He took the photo and shook it placing it next to him.
Phil leaned back so he balanced on his arms and raised an eyebrow at Dan who was inching closer.
He lifted his hand up and grabbed the cigarette out of Phil's mouth leaving his lips feeling empty and cold.
Dan placed it in his own mouth and got out a lighter cupping his hand around the cigarette the light flickering.
The sun was now setting slowly. He'd have to go to the store tomorrow. At least Dan had school so he didn't need to worry about any more surprises.
Dan took a drag and held it for a few moments before he let it fall out of his mouth.
"I shouldn't have introduced you to this." Phil shook his head.
Dan shrugged, "told you I was probably going to start anyway."
"But you don't look cool when you smoke." Phil laughs making Dan stiffen up a bit.
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"It means that you seem so innocent with your curly hair and freckles and pink cheeks that a cigarette seems out of character. Not to mention you actually dragged me to a picnic with some of my favorite thing. Out of character indeed." Phil plucked the cigarette out of his mouth and puffed some smoke into his face.
He recoiled, "and it's your character?"
"I'm fucked up Dan." Phil reminded, "a lot of shit happened to me so yes, a cigarette addiction is not a step out of my comfort zone."
"Just tell me." Dan said flatly.
Phil shook his head, "told ya all you need to know."
"But I want to know more."
"But I wanted to go to the grocery store." Phil laughs, "I'm just kidding this is nice."
"Seriously, why don't you tell me?" Dan asks.
"Because I barely know you?" Phil shakes his head, "or did you forget we only started working together a week ago."
"A week is a long time." Dan prodded, "lots of things happened this week."
"No." Phil said tightly making Dan drop his shoulders in defeat.
"Promise me you will someday."
"I'm not the one for promises, now let's enjoy this wonderful moment you set up."
Dan nodded, "okay so this next week we are only working together on Wednesday and Friday."
"Alright." Phil said trying to hide his disappointment by talking another drag.
"So.." Dan trailed, "I was thinking we could hang out some other time?"
"Sure." Phil shrugged trying to play it off but he was really actually excited, "no more extravagant flowers and blankets and cameras and cigarettes though, right?"
Dan laughed, "sure."
"Woah." Phil unlit his cigarette by smashing it into the dirt behind him his eyes focused on the moon in front of him.
"What?" Dan looked around behind him but the gazebo top cut off his view.
Phil waved him over and stared at the white ball in front of them. It was huge and glowing brightly in the ebbing daylight. As the sun was setting it began to illuminate the world.
Dan sat next to him and Phil felt the heat of his arm brushing against his own.
Looking at Dan Phil decided that moonlight suited him more. It was calming and seemed to drape over everything beautifully. The light was barely as harsh as the sun and it was relaxing, dull even. A nice kinda dull that made Dans eyes twinkle. He liked them better when they were like this. His eyes were darker but they looked like water. Like two thick pools of water that swallowed everything it saw. Inside of them Phil could see the moon. He could begin to see all of the stars that began to appear.
Dan finally shifted his gaze to Phil so that now he was in his eyes. He liked the moon better.
He blinked slowly so that his eyelashes hit his eyelids. Phil parted his lips and tilted his head slightly as Dan inched forward.
Phil let a hand fall on his shoulder and Dan didn't even respond, his eyes were cool and set on Phil. He let his fingers curl over his neck and Dan sighed. Phil moved his head in closer ducking slightly to be on the same level as Dan. He let his hand travel up to cup his face rubbing his thumb on his cheek slightly.
Dan finally moved his hands so that they hit Phil's chest. Phil half expected Dan to push him away but instead he just pawed at him.
Phil dragged Dans head in close so that their lips faintly touched each other and closed his eyes. Phil felt Dans mouth open slightly as if he were begging for a kiss, squirming under his grasp. Letting the moment drag on for a few more heartbeats Phil closed the gap.
He was falling. That's the best and, yes, cheesiest way of describing this. Phil felt Dans warm lips on his own and he was falling. Like he tripped into Dans world and their was no way he could claw himself back out.
He never wanted this. Never wanted to have someone in his life. Never wanted to be kissing someone at this moment but right now it felt right.
Phil shooed his thoughts away and just concentrated on the feeling of Dans lips against his own. His breath was warm and tasted like coffee and smoke.
He felt Dan push forward so that they were closer now. Phil felt Dans hands move to his sides. It became more intense as Phil let his hands drop as well and wrap around the small of his back pulling him in. He shivered slightly as Dans hands touched skin under his shirt.
Phil wanted to keep kissing but he needed air so reluctantly he pulled away.
"Shit." Phil whispered through pants in a relieved voice.
Dan let his hands fall and his eyes meet Phil's.
"Shit." Phil mumbled again this time realizing what happened.
"What?" Dan inched forward but Phil pushed him away. His shoulders dropped and mouth fell open.
"This was a mistake." Phil shook his head, "I was supposed to come here and start over and not drag anyone into my life but yet you did."
"Phil, please ju-"
"No. Dan." Phil grabbed his arms and looked him straight in the eyes, "you don't deserve this."
"But I want this."
Phil began to tear up, "everything is fucking wrong with me, why don't you see that?"
Dan searched Phil's eyes and said, "I don't even care."
"You would." Phil shook his head, "if you knew what I did but I can't tell you-"
"Phil!" Dan smiled, "it's okay. I don't care."
"I could've murdered somebody." Phil sniffled to try and rid the tears.
"Did you?"
"No."
"Then I don't care what you did." Dan reassured, "okay?"
"Okay." Phil nodded, "I need to- I need to go home right now."
Phil let his hands drop and Dan nodded, understanding that Phil needed head space. Before he stood up he let himself look Dan up once more wondering how the hell could anyone like himself?
