Chapter Twenty Seven
A/N: Back to updating at least for a lil' while. Thank you to all you brave souls who dare continue reading through this story.
We start the chapter out with Bard being a total dick. :D
Kali has been lead all over that cursed little town and yet the small group was still moving. Soon Bofur was leading the way up a slightly familiar staircase. He threw himself against the door, pounding a fist on it, and stumbled back when the door was thrown open. Bard took one look over the group and began retreating back inside, "No. I'm done with dwarves. Go away."
Bofur stuck a foot in front of the closing door, forcing Bard to listen to him, "No, no, no! No one will help us; Kali's sick. She's very sick."
Bard got a better look over the girl. Her normally tan skin was pale, almost translucent to the point of clearly seeing the webs of blue veins beneath her skin. Dark rings outlines her eyes, and her grimy hair hung in thin strands over her face. Kali was panting, despite being held up by Fili and Oin. Grumpily, Bard threw open the door again, "Fine."
Bofur and Kili scurried inside. Kili stayed by the door, making sure the other three got inside, and he looked up at Bard, "Thank you."
"Do not thank me," Bard closed the door and stalked back into his home, "As soon as she is healed you cursed dwarves will leave me and my family alone."
Oin and Fili quickly dragged Kali over to a small bed and laid her in it. It was in a small alcove of the house that was slightly more raised than the kitchen it branched from. Oin released her and went to rummage through Bard's kitchen for something. Kali's eyes were closed and Fili tapped her cheeks, "Kali? Kali don't fall asleep on us."
"My knee..." Fili could see small slits of brown beneath her long lashes, "Hurts..."
"Well, it's about to hurt a lot more," Fili's voice was hard and emotionless as he clasped a hand over her lower thigh, "Bofur, Kili, hold her down." four new hands held Kali down and she became paranoid.
"Fili what are you-" her question broke off into a long, gravelly scream when the fingers of Fili's free hand dug into her knee wound without a moment's hesitation.
Bofur took a hand to hold her leg, but she still writhed around in pain. Kili's grip tightened, "Fee, what are you doing?"
Fili jumped back with a small laugh of success. In answer to Kili and Bofur's confused looks, Fili held up his bloody hand and between his fingers was a tiny triangle, "The arrowhead."
"How did you know?" Kili absentmindedly stroked Kali's hair and she was too numb to shy away.
"She'd broken the shaft off when she pulled it out," Fili threw the arrowhead on the floor, "leaving that behind. I'd never gotten a chance to say anything about it."
Oin was back at Kali's side and pressed a warm, wet cloth to her forehead, shoving a cup of something steaming into her hands, "Drink that."
Kali sat up a little and downed it in one gulp and then she jerked forward, fighting back the urge to vomit all over Kili, "What was that?!"
"Something that should help heal you," Oin told her, pushing her back down. He put the cloth back over her forehead, "I'll keep watch on you."
"So will we," the other three chorused.
Bard had stepped back into the kitchen, "How is she?"
"As if you care," Kali coughed out harshly, "You're done with dwarves-" another cough ripped through her chest, "if I remember correctly-y."
Bard rolled his eyes, "Is she always this irritable?"
"More so than you'd think," Fili stepped into the kitchen and began sifting through everything, "Oin, she's still got a fever about her," he paused and looked back at the medic, "What was it you gave her?"
"Yarrow tea," Oin answered, "Doesn't have the best taste but it makes you sweat. Forces out the fever quicker."
Kali moaned and wrapped her arms around her stomach, "I'm c-cold..."
Bofur put a hand to her forehead, "You're burning up, Kali. Far from cold."
She scrunched her eyes shut, "Inside... My bones are on fire... but.. frozen..."
"Those a contradictory descriptions," Kili muttered.
"She's hallucinogenic, I think," Bard's son had appeared in the outside doorway, "Can't tell the difference between what she's saying and what she's experiencing."
"I know what I'm saying and I know what I'm experiencing, boy," Kali rolled on her side and glared at Bain through her sweaty hair, "My insides are burning..." with another groan Kali rolled so she was face-down, "Make it sto-op!"
Oin pulled the cloth out from under her forehead and jumped back to the sink, "Have you got any vinegar?"
"Vinegar?" Bard questioned, but all the same reached into the cupboard above Oin's head, "Here."
Bofur rolled Kali back over and watched Oin run water into a bowl and almost empty the entire vinegar bottle into it as well, "What are you doing?"
"Vinegar and warm water," Oin dipped the cloth in, wrung it out and re-folded it as he shuffled back over and placed it on Kali's forehead, "Supposed to bring down the fever."
"How long do we wait until we know if it brought the fever down?" Fili held Kali down, as she's started wriggling again.
"Can you not do anything about her pain?" Kili asked.
"Perhaps some ginger powder, but that's the only thing possibly on hand," Oin looked up at Bard.
His eldest daughter, however was already handing a jar of ginger powder to Oin, "Here."
Oin took it back to the countertop that was strewn over with various foods and bowls, shoving some aside to work.
Kali ground out one word between coughs, "Mint."
"Mint?" Bard's brow furrowed, "Why would... Peppermint tea!" Bard rounded on Oin, "Helps with indigestion."
"I don't believe it's indigestion she's got," Fili shook his head, but looked down at Kali, "Is it?" She only growled at him, another wave of pain washing through her veins.
"Fili, what's wrong with her?" Kili groaned.
"I don't know!" Fili snapped, "Do I look like a Healer to you?"
Kili paused for a moment, drinking in his brother, "Actually, if I didn't know...your face has this...quality to it, brother-"
Fili reached over and smacked Kili, "Focus, Kili! We need something else."
"Lemon water?" Bofur suggested, watching Oin shove a cup of ginger-powder-water into Kali's hands.
Oin shook his head and took the glass back after Kali downed it, "'s for indigestion again, lad," he went back into the kitchen and began searching through the cupboards he could reach.
"Ginger roots?" Kili perked up a bit and clamped his teeth together when Kali's tight grip found his fingers.
Oin paused, "Could help with the nausea but that's it."
Kali spasmed and jolted upright, a bout of nausea hitting her like a brick but she swallowed it like before and laid back down, half growling and half groaning. Bard returned from another part of the house with a bag of medicine. He dropped it on the counter and began digging through it, the glass containers clinking together made Kali's ears ring and she cursed out at the man, "Bard, le estel imrid amrad ursul!"
Bard stopped and raised an eyebrow at her, "I do not know what you just said, but you need to calm down, Miss Silverarm. Stressing yourself further will only worsen your condition."
She glared at him. Stop worrying about my condition (Yes, it was a completely insane reason to glare, but Kali is not in her right state of mind at the moment). Fili took the cloth from her forehead and placed his hand there instead, "She's still burning up, is there anything else we could do?"
"Herbs," Oin threw up his hands a little and looked over in Bard's direction, "I need herbs, something to bring down her fever."
Bard continued looking through his bag, checking labels, "I have nightshade, feverfew..."
Oin shook his head, "They're no use to me. Do you have any Kingsfoil?"
Kali inhaled sharply, "I-Isn't that-t used f-for p-poison?!"
"Sh-sh-sh... don't overexert yourself," Kili cooed, holding Kali's hands, "You're shivering. Why are you shivering your temperature is well above a hundred."
"That's not-t answering my question-n, Kili!" Kali snapped, tightening her arms around herself.
Bard shook his head, "Kingsfoil is a weed. We feed it to the pigs."
Bofur started a bit, "Pigs? Weed? Right," suddenly he spun on his heel and pointed at Kali, "Don't move."
She half-shouted after him as he disappeared through the door, "Where else would I go? You ignorant bastard!"
A/N: Kay, so... Kali's dying. Like, a lot. Can someone tell me if I'f doing a good job at writing her in like she's sick and dying? I need some feedback.
Also, like, those are actual 'home remedies' I found online, so, like, Yarrow Tea [whatever tf that is] actually helps with fevers and vinegar and warm water and peppermint tea and such..
Yeah...
