Chapter Thirty Eight

Suddenly Kali heard Kili's very angry voice, "I will not hide behind a wall of stone, while others fight our battles for us!" there was a pause, "It is not in my blood, Thorin."

Thorin...? Kali began moving towards the commotion, He's never called Thorin by first name before.

"No, it is not," Thorin was trying to keep his voice low, though Kali's keen ears still picked it up, "We are sons of Durin. And Durin's folk do not flee from a fight."

When Kali finally reached the two, Thorin was striding towards the other dwarves and Kali just ran and jumped into Kili's arms, "I love you!"

Kili blinked back more tears and squeezed her with all his strength. He buried his head in the crook of Kali's neck and spun her once before setting her back on her feet, "Are you back to your senses yet?"

Kali sniffled, "I am, and I apologize for what I said before."

Thorin's voice overruled Kili's, "I have no right to ask this of any of you; but will you follow me... one last time?" Every single dwarf raised their weapon, ready to follow their leader, their friend, anywhere once again. Thorin drew in a small breath, "If you decide to do this... understand that you may not return..."

The idea had no matter to anyone within that hall. If they were to die, they would die a warrior's death. The others set to stripping themselves of their heavy armour and Kali began doing the same. Kili spoke as he, too, began undoing his heavy armour, "I understand that you did not have your correct wits about you when you said those things. Indeed they did hurt, but somehow I knew you hadn't meant any of it."

Soon Kali was dressed in a coat of silver chains, similar to the gold one Kili bore. Kali tied hers off with the belt she had on over her torn dress. This chain mail should be enough, Kali adjusted it around the arms, "Guys...?"

They'd all begun rigging up some sort of contraption. Dwarves, being natural workers and all, were very skilled at those type of things and so whatever they were doing with that discarded bell hadn't taken very long and soon it was hanging precariously from the ceiling, held up by a rope.

Kili was suddenly at her side, pressing something small and round into her palm, "Take this."

Kali brought whatever it was up to her eyes. It was a stone, carved from a chunk of Labradorite taken from the heart of the Blue Mountains, sanded into a smooth oval, "Your talisman..." she flipped it over to read the runes carved into it, "Return to me... Kili," Kali looked up to meet his gaze, "You can't give this to me-"

"I just did," his small grin was borderline between confident and mischievous, "Take it, please."

"It is not mine to take-"

"But it is mine to give to whomever I wish," Kili took Kali's hands and curled her fingers around the runestone, "I wish to give it to you."

Kali nodded and tucked the runestone away, close to her heart, just Fili rushed over to her, pressing a Dwarvish longsword into her hand, "Take this. You'll need it."

She quickly wrapped her fingers around it before either one of them dropped it. The familiarity of it's weight brought dread into her heart, "We're really doing this?"

Fili came in from the left and kissed her cheek and the same time Kili kissed her right, "Yes, love, we are," Kili muttered.

"We need you to be safe," Fili told her.

Kali glared, sheathing her sword to put a hand on each of their shoulders, "We'll all be safe because I am not leaving you," she cut off their protests, "I am giving you my word that only death will take me from your side. You two must make me a promise before we charge."

"Anything," they breathed.

"Don't go where I can't follow..." her voice cracked slightly.

A booming horn blew from the top of the ramparts, silencing all noises outside. Everyone ducked as the bell rope was cut, gravity taking over as the bell swung and barreled into the makeshift blockade, knocking it over with a resounding ring.

A dark blue blur streaked by Kali and she instinctively unsheathed her sword, raising it as she followed Thorin into what may be the last battle she ever saw. The other dwarves fell into a group, weapons ready as they ran across the jagged rocks of the blockade that had fell into the moat.
