Chapter Thirty
A/N: That last chapter was all over the place and I apologize :/
Perhaps this one will be better
And so begins the Third installment of The Hobbit
BATTLE OF THE FIVE FREAKIN' ARMIES
Kili frowned, "What?"
A large shadow swooped overhead, awakening screams from the people outside. Tauriel stepped into the kitchen, looking lively despite the large bruise on her forehead. Neither Kili nor Kali had noticed she'd woken and gone outside, "We have no time. We must leave!"
"Get her up," Bofur waved his arms up and down a bit, feeling the impending doom that was nearing.
"Come on, love," Kili gently took hold of Kali's upper arms.
Bofur was still frantic, "Come on, Come on! Let's go!"
"I'm fine," Kali snapped, shaking off Kili's hands, "I can walk on my own."
"As fast as you can," Tauriel was still scurrying around the house, gathering supplies they may need.
"I don't take commands from elves," Kali glared, watching Tauriel's every move. Kali, now back to her senses for the most part, felt completely gross, "Sigrid, have you got a change of clothes I could... borrow, perhaps?"
Sigrid gave her an exasperated look, silently asking if this was really the time to be doing this, but all the same Kali got a dress thrown at her, "That's the only thing close to your size."
"Thank you," Kali stumbled into a back room and stripped off her tunic (but left her trousers on), replacing it with the long green dress. She growled and ripped it up to above her knees. It was now raggedly torn, slit up the front in a triangular shape. With a huff, Kali tied her belt around her stomach, gently, to tighten the now slightly loose dress.
"You don't look too steady," Fili ran his eyes over Kali quick as she stepped back out, though that was not why he was looking at her. The dress fit her frame all too well, "Are you sure you can walk on your own?"
"Let's go and we can find out," Kali's look was flat with annoyance.
"We're not leaving," Bain stepped into the center of the room, looking at all of them, "Not without our father."
"If you stay here, your sisters will die," Tauriel shoved a small pack into Bain's arms, "Is that what your father would want?"
A roar sounded from the north. It was too close and Kali shuddered, "Bain, pay no attention to the elf. Your father is a smart man, he will find you but you and your sisters need to get to safety for him to do that. Let's go."
Kali's softer approach towards the young man seemed to have worked and he nodded, "This way."
He and his sisters led the others down a back staircase to a small boat floating lazily in the gently waves. Illuminated by the moonlight, it may even have been peaceful if there was not a Fire Drake circling the terrified city. The three children stepped into the boat, followed by Tauriel, Bofur, Oin and then Kili and Fili. Fili turned and reached back towards Kali, whom he'd rested against a wooden upright,"Give me your hand."
"Come on," Bofur urged, watching the skies for any sign of the terrifying shadow, "We gotta go!"
"Stop telling me what to do, elf!" Kali snapped, taking gentle steps towards the boat.
Kili opened his arms, "Kali, come on!"
The moment Kali was safely seated Tauriel untied the boat and pushed off, gently moving them through the water. The small helm broke through chunks of ice that Kali suspected wouldn't be there in a moment's time.
She was right. With a quick look to to see where the dragon was, Kali's keen eyes found him a small distance off, barreling nearer. Kali cried out when she saw the glow starting deep in his chest, "Watch it!"
The blast of flame that emitted from Smaug's mouth ran a strip right down the middle of Laketown. Even from where their boat was, far to the right of the damage, they could still feel the heat. People's screaming became more and more frantic, a few boats dotting the water here and there as they tried their best to escape.
Kali scrunched her eyes shut, forcing back the memories of the last time she'd encountered the dragon's wrath. Bain shouted, "Watch out!"
Their boat collided with something, jerking Kali and forcing her eyes open once more. The Master's barge was what they'd run into. It was piled high with endless amounts of gold and jewels. Somehow they managed to break apart their boats and the Master yelled, "Move it! Move it! Come on, faster!"
Just to tick him off further, Kali reached out and began raking her hands through his gold, knocking it into the water. He wailed like a child, "My gold! My GOLD!"
"Serves you right, you fat cowardly bastard!" Kali shouted at him as his servants poled the barge down the pathway of water.
Again, Smaug rounded and lit another section of Esgaroth aflame. Kali, again, scrunched shut her eyes. This heat is unbearable. She covered her ears, unable to listen to the screams of terror and pain and death that mixed with the evil leathery flapping of wings above.
Kali inhaled sharply at the sound of unscathed wood being burned. The heavy breeze from Smaug flying past yet again blew smoke directly towards them. Kali coughed and opened her burning eyes, scrubbing the tears and soot from them. She got a good look at the destruction around them, "Where are we?" she whispered at Oin.
"Hiding," Bofur answered, "Until it's safe to move again."
Indeed, when the dragon passed overhead again Tauriel poled the boat out from under the overhang they'd been stopped under. After a moment of dead silence from those in the boat, the only sounds coming from the people of Laketown, the sinister roars of Smaug and the crackling of flames, Bain suddenly shouted out, "Da!"
Tilda shouted as well, her scream echoing, "DA!"
Kali followed their gazes to the bell tower. A blurry, shadowy figure was stood atop with a longbow. Though her vision was fuzzy, it was still easy to tell it was indeed Bard who drew the string back and shot an arrow at the beast, "He hit it!" Kali almost fell from the boat when she moved to the one side, "He hit the dragon!"
"No..." Tauriel whispered.
"He did!" Kili grinned a little, "He hit his mark, I saw!"
"His arrows cannot pierce its hide," Tauriel denied all claims of what the dwarves saw, "I fear nothing will."
"There is something," Kali whispered, remembering the Black Arrow. She looked back over her shoulder at Bard's home.
Suddenly Bain stood and grabbed onto a fishing net hook (the kind used to haul up large nets of crab or lobster or something) and swung himself from the boat. Bofur, Kili and Fili all missed when they grabbed at him.
"What are you doing?!" Bofur shouted.
"Come back! Bain, come back!" Genuine worry was threaded through Fili's voice, and it made Kali's heart flutter a bit,
Tauriel continued on, forcing the others to watch Bain run around on the docks, "Leave him! We cannot go back."
"Bain!" Tilda cried, reaching helplessly out for him.
Kali grit her teeth. Someone has to go make sure the boy doesn't get killed. This was one of those spur-of-the-moment incidents where Kali's body acted without her mind's consent. Ignoring the shouts and demands from the others, Kali leaned over the side of the boat and grabbed into the top part of a dock post. Using it, she pulled herself from the boat and onto the dock, only her boots getting a little wet.
"Kali!" Kili and Fili screeched.
"What are you doing?!" Bofur reached out his hand, "Come back!"
"No!" Kali began moving down the dock, away from the water and closer to the burning buildings. Her leg was indeed healed, though there was a slight limp she feared would always be there, "I'll find you later! May Durin be with you!"
With those words she disappeared through a patch of thick, black smoke that hid her from the others' views, "Bain!" she shouted, "Bain!" This was a horrible idea, I've no clue where the boy went. Kali took the collar of her tunic and pulled it over her nose in an attempt to stifle the smoke out. She looked ahead at a nearing figure, hoping it was Bain.
It wasn't. It was far from Bain. The figure was actually a woman, a beautiful young woman... Kali shuddered. By Durin's name she's on fire... "Forgive me for this..." Kali waited until the burning woman was close enough before grabbing her shoulders and pushing her into the canal. (Kali you dick)
She called out to the nearest people, "Make for the canal!" Water is your only friend right now. The heat was absolutely unbearable as Kali slowly made her way further into town. The flames licked at her everywhere she went, reaching out to claim her however she would not have it.
Air hitched in her throat when Smaug flew over again, making yet another fiery strip in the town. She coughed, hard, into her tunic and the dirty cloth came away bloody. Kali squinted against the smoke, eyes burning as badly as her throat, "Bain?!"
It was very hard for her to see anything other than fire and death, so straight ahead Kali's eyes remained. She drew her tunic closer, wrapping her arms around herself for comfort. Lost and alone amongst dragon fire for a second time in her life scared Kali out of her wits and it was taking every ounce of energy not to cry, however much she wished to, "BAIN!" the name was dragged out, her voice going ragged before ending in a coughing fit. Kali fell to her knees and retched into the canal, the only thing she expelled was more blood.
When a large claw grabbed onto the house nearest to her, Kali screamed out and scrambled backwards into hiding, her hand sliding through a puddle of spit and blood that hadn't made it into the water. She brought her knees to her chest, wrapped her arms around her legs and pressed her back into a different house. All willpower was gone from her being now, and her sobs shook her entire frame.
"Who are you that would stand against me?" Smaug's voice boomed overhead, loud and deep as he glowered at who Kali assumed to be Bard. He was the only one stupid enough to stand against a dragon. There was a break in sound, other than the sizzling of fire and continuous screaming before the dragon spoke again, "Now that is a pity. What will you do now, Bowman? You are forsaken. No help will come."
The Master of Laketown floated past, very slowly, all eyes watching the dragon, "Now's our chance! Go! Go! Into the open water!"
Is that where I am? Kali mused, I've gone all the way across Esgaroth... Smaug's angry voice cut through Kali's musing, shaking the house she was pressed against, "Is that your child? You cannot save him from the fire. He will BURN!"
The house he had in his clutches crumbled under his weight. Smaug paid no attention as he moved forward, grabbing everything else, "Tell me, wretch - How now shall you challenge me?!" Kali's heart was like a jackrabbit in her chest. Any moment now Smaug's tail, or back foot would crush her and there was nothing she could do. Her limbs had stopped working, freezing her in her fetal position, forcing her to listen to the last words Bard would ever hear, "You have nothing left, but your DEATH!" The threat ended in a roar as Smaug launched himself forward, clawing at the houses along the canal.
Kali wasn't sure what happened next. She didn't want to know what happened net, so she stood, her vision immediately dotting with black and purple dots. She drunkenly staggered through the smoke and fire towards the boardwalk that connected Esgaroth and the mainland, "I... mountain... dragon... smoke..." her body felt sluggish like that fateful night so long ago back at Bilbo's where she'd drank too much ale.
That was it for her. Her knees buckled and she fell face-first down onto the wooden walkway, sprawling out on her stomach as everything around her became muffled.
A/N: How come no one else is almost constantly dying? Why is it always Miss Silverarm that's got to almost die all the time, blackin' out and that ish.
*Sigh*
