Chapter Forty One

Dale was littered with the bodies of elves and men and Kali feared to look down, feared to check if any faces were familiar. She stepped with utter care and shrunk back when a tall, dark haired elf ran past her. He ran straight to Thranduil, who was looking upon the carnage with horror, "Recall your company."

When the elf turned to blow his horn, Kali got a better look at his face and grit her teeth, her fingers tightening around her bow, "Celedir."

Gandalf ran up Thranduil, "My Lord, dispatch this force to Ravenhill! The dwarves are about to be overrun. Thorin must be warned!"

"By all means, warn him" Thranduil leaned closer, "I have spent enough Elvish blood in defense of this accursed land - No more!" Kali stepped in the path of Thranduil before he was able to completely walk away and Thranduil leaned down to her height, "Move."

"Make me," she snapped, standing her ground . No more was anyone going to be giving her orders, "You haven't been defending this land, you've been battling for your damned gems! Perhaps if you would show some sympathy for the Dwarves, perhaps show a sliver of kindness to someone other than yourself for once you would get some in return!"

"Do not speak to me of kindness, dwarf," Thranduil snapped, standing up to his full intimidating height, "Now step out of the way." his tone suggested he had superiority over her.

Curse him and all his family, "I may be short but you're still beneath me!" Kali still hadn't moved, but instead crossed her arms.

"Beneath you?" Thranduil raised one of his annoyingly perfect eyebrows in shock, "I am beneath no one."

Kali snorted, "You may be as tall as an Ent but you've the personality of an orc."

Thranduil seemed to have had enough of the conversation and he shoved her out of the way. Kali stumbled slightly to one side, but hadn't fallen.

Bilbo shouted, but Kali hadn't heard him. Without warning her hands armed themselves and sent an arrow flying at Thranduil's back. And then Thranduil unsheathed a dagger and spun on his heel, his face showing the rage taken out on the airborne arrow that now lay several feet away. The two pieces lay in a patch of sticky red snow, "You dare aim a weapon at me? I am a King!"

"Indeed I do," Kali spat, "You have the nerve to walk away from a war you started and you ask me if I dare to aim a weapon at a King while you have been doing the same to not one, but two Kings for the past several hours!"

"That miserable excuse for a dwarf is no King," Thranduil's glare was hard and set on Kali, "He was the one who decided to keep my gems from me, to hole himself up in that Mountain-"

Kali interrupted Thranduil and grinned maliciously at his angry reaction, "Stand here and idle, argue with whomever you wish except for me. I've other pressing matters at hand than to argue with a..." her mind floated back to what Dain had called him, and she narrowed her eyes, "a pointy-eared princess."

Kali spun on her heel and brushed past Bilbo, Gandalf and Celedir before arming her bow once more and jumping into the heart of the War on Dale. There were dead everywhere and wounded staggering around. Kali paused only to help those who needed help and dispatched those who didn't deserve it on the move without a second glance in their direction.

She was forced to cross a small frozen lake pass of some sort to get to Ravenhill, but at least the battle seemed to be winding down, though many who were still alive were the wrong species and several orcs had begun chasing her. Kali spun on her heel and walked backwards, shooting down those behind her. Lucky for her there were none in front.

The last orc fell and she spun to face forward again, the wounds in Kali's side and shoulder screaming for medical attention that wasn't available. She ignored it and pushed on, needing to get to Ravenhill as fast as possible. There were incoherent shouts coming from atop the ruins, mixing with the screeching of a flock of werebats.

Archers... she grumbled and pulled out her bow, shooting at orcs that were shooting at her. Most were really terrible shots, but one lucky one caught her off guard and she was hit with her second arrow of the battle, straight through the collarbone. The sheer force of it knocked her backwards and there she lay for a good ten minutes before finally finding the strength to stand and continue on her way.

The wind had picked up, howling through her ears. It carried with it layers of snow and mist, disorienting Kali's sense of direction. She followed the sounds of metal against metal and distraught, incoherent shouting until she came to the foot of the crumbling steps that lead to the top of Ravenhill.

Out of the mist jumped a scrawny goblin and it crashed straight into Kali, pushing her back out further onto the ice. More and more emerged from the mist and Kali was giving all her strength to fighting them off, but yet again, in the process she got several cuts and scrapes.

When arrows began flying from somewhere behind her, Kali took a chance and looked, seeing if it was friendly fire or not. Her sharp eyes barely spotted Legolas, standing atop a tall stone structure. He was shooting arrows both for her and for Thorin, who had the same issue atop the waterfall, "Thorin!" she shouted and pushed her sword through the chest of a goblin before running away from the rest, her boots slipping on the ice and blood. More werebats swarmed, flying low over her to get to the main battle. Kali swung her sword up, trying to kill those that came at her and any others that dared fly close to her.

There was a trail of bodies in Kali's wake and she slipped and slid around on the ice, and at the sound of sword fighting she looked to the top of a nearing ruin to find Kili fighting off two orcs, "Kili!" Kali sighed in relief, but dread made her heart heavy. Where's Fili...? No more goblins or orcs decided she was worth a bother and that left Kali the ability to easily make her way to the side of Ravenhill the fights seemed to be, opposite the side she was originally trying to go to.

Not a moment after she'd reached the steps (No goblins jumped from anywhere this time) there was a great wind and a large shadow passed overhead. Kali readied her sword, preparing for a troll of some sort but it was quite the opposite. An Eagle swooped over the Ruins of Ravenhill, flying towards the North with his flock following closely behind. The Eagles! A small shock of joy jolted through Kali and she turned, new energy spurring through her veins.

Kali took a start when a pained scream rang through her ears. It was too deep to be either Kili or Fili and that worried her, "Thorin!" she shouted out again and took the steps two at a time.

The echoing of the noise off the stones surrounding Kali mixed in with the howling of the wind made it hard to pinpoint the exact location of where the scream came from and when she found Thorin she was only able to watch him fall over.
