9. Suprises and Superiors
Today in History, once the lesson had ended Margot came right up to me. Her eyes were sparkling.
"Riley! Montrose Mansion is amazing. It's so addictive." She was bouncing on the balls of her feet.
I placed my hands on her shoulders to stop her jumpy movement.
"You're like a rocket about to take off." I laughed. Margot rolled her eyes but this time it wasn't the annoyed kind.
I hoisted my bag onto my back. "See. I told you it was good."
"I have to admit," She said as we made our way towards the classroom door. "You were right! I'm on the second last episode, I will probably finish it when I get home."
"Well..." I said, a grin playing on my lips. "I do have the other three seasons. So if you really are into it I guess we could wat-"
"Yes!" She cut me off.
My heart lifted, I felt like a proud mom.
"Okay. Friday. I'll be there as usual."
The bell had rung for break so we were making our way out to the lawn.
"So how was your date?" I asked, curious to know what she and Emmanual had done after I'd left.
Margot arched a questing eyebrow. "Date?"
"Yeah." I shrugged. "With Emmanual."
Margot practically snorted with laughter. "Emmanual!?"
I stop and frowned at her. I was almost certain that they were together... The way Emmanual had looked at her?
"Ya. Aren't you guys dating?"
Margot pursed her lips. "No. We aren't." She started making her way down the hall again.
"Hmmmm." I mused. "Does he know that?"
She fiercely spun around on her heal. "Ugh, Don't be ridiculous of course he does!"
She continued making her way to her group of friends.
"Well he likes you!" I called through the haze of people.
Margot waved a dismissive hand.
I chuckled to myself while standing in the middle of the busy corridor. Then I turned and went to my own group of friends.
¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥
"Oh shit!" I exclaimed as the Duke of Bassingham got slammed in the head with a beer bottle. There was complete mayhem as the drunk men in the pub started throwing chairs and breaking glass.
"So why did you think Emmanual and I were dating?" Margot's thoughts interrupted my concentration on the TV.
"I don't know." I said my hand groping for the popcorn bowl, my eyes still glued to the screen. Margot kindly moved the bowl into my reach and I scooped up a large handful of the slippery butter flavoured popcorn.
"I guess," I said through a mouthful of popcorn, "The way he looked at you."
"And how exactly did he look at me?" Margot's eyes clearly weren't on the screen.
I turned to her, exasperated, and pointed a buttery finger at the tv. "Focus Margot! Look, Lethbridge from Bournemouth just left his wife!"
"Yes. I see that." I was surprised she saw anything because she clearly wasn't watching! "I just want to kn-"
"Okay off!"
We were interrupted by Claire marching into the room. I nearly choked on my popcorn! I didn't even know she was home.
Margot irritably paused our show.
"Last Chances, starts in five minutes and I am not missing the best episode yet." She plonked herself down on the reclining chair across from us.
Margot glared at her sister. "We were here first Claire! We're not going to stop just because you have some stupid sh-"
"Actually." I stood bolt upright, both the Saunders sisters looked at me. I felt stupid. "Actually," I said again to Claire, I could feel Margot's eyes boring into me. "Y-y- you can have the tv."
Damn I was stuttering again! Margot let out a lengthy sigh and rolled her eyes.
I forced my shaking hand to pick up the remote and hand it to Claire. Hopefully she didn't notice my hand shaking, too much.
Claire smiled at me. Making my heart do backflips in my chest. "Thanks Riley, so kind... Unlike Margot who's rude."
Margot growled in frustration and marched out of the room. I could hear her stomping up the stairs.
I moved to make my way out of the room when Claire said, "Oh Riley. Do you think you could pass the popcorn?"
I looked at the large bowl of butter popcorn that was still situated on the couch where we'd left it.
Part of me didn't want to give it to Claire as I wasn't done eating it. I could take the popcorn and finish it with Margot, and apologise for letting Claire take over our marathon?
"Here you go." I handed the bowl to Claire. She nodded her eyes were focused on finding the tv channel. I walked out of the room.
Margot was waiting for me on the staircase landing. Her arms were folded and she frowned down at me like an unimpressed mother.
"Why did you do that!" She exclaimed and turned making her way down the passage.
"Because she didn't want to miss one of the best episodes." I said struggling to keep up with her as she stomped her way down the house.
"She just said that Riley! The series Last Chances ended in June last year. She's watched all the episodes! On repeat!"
We had entered her room.
"Oh," I said feeling dumb, "Well I didn't know that."
My brain had moved past the argument with Margot and I was now was checking out her room. Now that I thought about it, I'd never been inside Margot's room.
And it was pretty cool. She had one of those hammock chair things that you sit inside when you want to read or something.
"Ah cool! You have one of these!" I exclaimed. Immediately making my way to the chair and clambering inside it. It was really comfortable.
Margot was still standing by the door. Her arms still crossed. She was definitely unamused that I was now swinging in her hammock chair.
"Look I'm sorry I gave up our Montrose Mansion session to Claire." I apologized. "But in my defence you weren't really watching it."
Margot sighed and made her way over to her bed. "You just let her take advantage of you like that." Then she muttered, "Thank God she's going to Thailand!"
