5. Tensions and Tomfoolery
It was Saturday, I had just walked down to the Saunders house. Margot and I were pressured for time, our project was due for Monday.
I rang the doorbell, this time Margot made sure to open it.
We headed inside. I was halfway up the stairs behind Margot when I heard my name being called.
I turned around, and was taken aback to see Claire at the foot of the stairs holding out a tray.
"Would you like a cookie?" She asked sweetly.
I stood stunned for a second then slowly I turned to Margot, as if to kind of ask for permission, I guess. She was gripping the railing, her jaw clenched tightly but she didn't object.
So I hopped down the stairs, and politely took a cookie.
"Thank you." I smiled up at Claire. She smiled back down back at me.
"Hey Margot," I called up to her, "would you like one?" I waved a cookie in air, purposely trying to irritate her, I succeeded.
Margot replied with an outright, "No." And continued up the stairs.
I placed the cookie back down on the tray, "Guess she's not hungry." I said to Claire.
Claire shrugged, "Maybe she'll have some later. Here, have another one." She handed me another chocolate chip cookie.
I took it from her gratefully, my hands tingling. I was glad that I was beginning to be able to act normally around her.
"Riley!" I heard Margot shout from the study.
"Oo! Better go." Claire cooed. I grinned to myself and bounded up the stairs.
"I don't see why that was necessary." Margot said as I took my seat next to her.
"What?" I mumbled through cookie, I placed the other cookie down next to the computer.
"You could have taken them later."
I shrugged, "I wanted it when it was warm."
"You do know what she's doing, right?"
"What?" I asked, my cheeks still bulging.
Margot sighed, "Never mind. Can we please just finish this project please."
I could tell she was looking forward to the days when the project was over and I wouldn't come over every other day.
I kind of didn't want to finish this project, because how else was I supposed to see Claire?

We had barely worked for twenty minutes when we were interrupted. By Claire, again?
"Margot can you help me reverse my car onto the lawn?"
"No." Margot said, not looking away from the screen.
Claire let out a breath, "Okay... Riley! Do you want to help me reverse my car onto the lawn."
Quick as a flash Margot spun around and before I could say anything she was out of her seat.
"Claire. Can I talk to you." She said, her voice a low tone. She followed her sister out of the room.
I was left alone in the study. I decided that I should probably wash the biscuit crumbs off my fingers, so I made my way out of the study and to the bathroom next door.
As I was rinsing my hands, I could hear Margot and Claire's conversation through the wall from the other side of the room.
Margot seemed to be scolding Claire, I listened more closely.
"You know what you're doing!" Came the angry sound of Margot's voice.
"No Margot I don't." Claire replied flatly.
I could just imagine poor Claire sitting on the bed while Margot towered menacingly over her.
"You're trying to distract Riley so she can pay attention to you! Just because you and Sven aren't going well. Ugh! You just love attention! Well not everything is about you!"
"Margot I just made cookies-"
"You don't bake! Ever! The last time you made cookies was for a fifth grade project. Your car doesn't have to be moved onto the lawn until tommorrow! You're taking advantage of Riley because you know she likes you!"
"Margot-"
"No, just stop it. We have a project due for Monday and I need her full attention for it. Ask Maisey to meet you at Rosa's or something, and I'll help you park your car tommorrow." Margot seemed to calm down a little bit.
I'd finished drying off my hands and decided to head back to the study.
Margot and Claire were having a heated conversation. It seemed like Margot dominated their arguments too even though she was the younger one.
I shook my head, Emily and I barely argued like that, our fights were more physical.
I sat back down in my chair.
A grin spread over my face. Claire and Sven weren't going well!
I turned to see Margot walk into the room, she looked heated from argueing.
"Give me that." She said snatching up the other cookie next to the computer, she bit forcefully down into it.
I chuckled. "You remind me of that girl Đynamite."
"Who?" She asked raising eyebrow.
"You know, that girl from The Bauriasian Games."
"Oh," She began typing on the computer, "I've never watched that movie."
I stared at her completely gobsmacked.
"What!" I exclaimed accidently knocking the cup of pens onto the floor. I didn't care. "How can you have never have watched it!"
I was literally shell-shocked. I couldn't believe that Margot had not watched one of the greatest movies of all time!
Even though Margot was... In her own head space at times. I still expected her to know the most popular movies in the past decade.
"But -but" I couldn't find the words, "It's won an Oscar!" I resorted to the most blatant thing I could think of.
Margot shrugged her shoulders, "The concept of it never interested me. I'm not into action and fighting."
I stood up from my chair, "It's an historical artistic masterpiece! Not just 'action and fighting'" I resumed my seat again, "James Norval is one of the best directors of all time!"
"Hmmm yeah..." She wasn't really listening because she was typing on the computer.
I just sat there completely astounded.
She turned me and scoffed. "What?"
"No," I said bending down to pick up the pens I'd dropped, "this is not okay, you can't continue like this. You will watch The Bauriasian Games. I will make sure you do."
"Okay then." She shrugged half-heartedly, "Maybe I'll give it a try."
I put the last pen back in the cup, still staring in at her in disbelief.
Margot glanced at me, "Close your mouth, you'll swallow a fly with it like that."
Slowly I shut my mouth.
I had to get this girl to watch that movie!
