42. Serenity And Spanish
I watched as Alonso, Angel's nephew, spun his girlfriend on the dance floor. Her silky blue dress flew out as she twirled in her 4-inch heels.
Yellow and gold-orange lights danced across the couple's faces as they laughed out loud.
The Cafe was packed. Nearly thirty guests. But for some reason I kept my attention on Alonso and his girlfriend.
They seemed so happy with each other, so content and care free. They seemed to have the type of relationship that so many people wish for.
The type without the weight of the world on their shoulders.
I almost envied them.
I probably looked like an idiot with a grin plastered on my face while watching the pair twist and spin to the vibrant Latin - American music.
"So Skyler hates me."
"Hm?" I broke out of my trance and looked at Margot who stood next to me.
Our afternoon had been complete mayhem. Working double time trying to wash over one hundred dishes, make 12 main courses, 25 puddings, and clear the dance floor, I think had left me pretty disfunctional.
I sat slumped against the counter and Margot stood, exhausted, next to me.
Her hair was pulled into a messy, somewhat bun that had little spikes of hair sticking out of it. I couldn't be one to judge though, my hair was just as bad if not worse. I hadn't had time to take out all the stupid braids, so I'd just drawn them back into a quick ponytail, leaving kinks all over my head.
I let out a long breath, welcoming the moment's rest after the non stop afternon.
"She doesn't hate you." I disagreed in the most convincing tone I could muster.
Margot just arched an eyebrow at me and I could tell she knew I was bluffing.
"Okay, maybe," I tried to think of a nice way to phrase it my head, "She strongly dislikes your existence in my life."
"Wow," She muttered dryly, "I'm pretty sure she strongly dislikes my existence on earth."
I said nothing. It was quite possible.
I took a long sip from my drink.
"Hey," I said changing the subject. I held up the glass to her face, it had a dark purplish liquid in it. "Have you tasted this punch? It's amazing!"
Margot glanced at the drink for a second, then looked at me.
"That's the punch Jess made..." she gave the glass a suspicious look, "And you do know it's most likely spiked?" She leaned calming against the counter.
I stared at the drink in my hand. I hadn't thought about the possibility of there being alcohol in it. I'd just assumed that since it was in the non alcohol section it was okay to drink and I was already halfway through my second glass.
I looked at the drink. Then I looked at Margot. Then back at the drink.
"Well it tastes good!" I downed the rest of the glass and slammed it on the counter.
Margot rolled her eyes at me and folded her arms.
"She's insecure you know." I added looking at the punch bowl a little way over. I wanted to refill my cup.
"Who?" Margot asked.
"Skyler," I said, taking my glass and preparing to walk across the room, "I think the idea of us working together it... Makes her anxious."
Margot bit her lip. I guess she found it hard to believe that Skyler Woods, the "Lesbian Goddess of Death," could be insecure.
I noticed that there were a few drops of purple liquid in the glass and swiged them down.
"But," I continued, "there's nothing between us."
Margot said nothing but nodded slowly.
"I keep telling her she has nothing to worry about." I added, my head felt a bit fuzzy. "Because we're long over."
"Yes." Margot mumbled, staring out at the dance floor.
I shook my head and then mosied my way through the guests to snag more of that punch!
¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥
"I love this song!" I sat in a chair of the corner of the room, facing the dance floor.
I swayed back and fourth, enthusiastically tapping my foot to the music.
I felt really good.
Margot approached me and I looked up at her with a wide smile on my face.
The night was still young, nearing on ten o-clock, and Alonso was still firing it up on the dance floor.
"Barry Yu," I called up to Margot, referencing the song, "It's called Faux Man."
"Right." Margot mused. I picked up my glass and finished the last of it. "Riley how many of those have you had?"
I paused. I tried to think, my head was buzzing. I felt like I had electricity pulsing through me.
"I don't know," I shouted over the music, "But it's alright I've had enough now."
That was only because the punch was all finished, to my great disappointment. Credit to Jess, that was the best punch I'd ever had in my entire life!
I heard Margot mutter something about it maybe being too late. I ignored her, focusing on the music.
Honestly, she was over reacting. I wasn't drunk. I just felt, really, really good!
Like I could join the circus, or run a hundred miles, or give a revolutionary speech at the Oscar's.
I started clapping my hands to the beat. The DJ, was seriously doing the most with this music. I almost wished it was my 21st party.
I watched as one of Alonso's mates suddenly dropped to the floor and started break dancing, everyone cheered in approval.
Maybe I should go onto the dance floor and join him?
I shook my head. Snap out of it. I didn't know where that surge of confidence came from.
Alonso's friend stopped break dancing, thank God because I was afraid of my sudden urge to copy him. He stood up and got claps on the back from all his friends.
The Barry Yu song was still playing. I moved enthusiastically along to the chorus.
Waving my hands, I sang to the song, "Faux man walking down the street. Faux men working in the banks. Faux men are-"
"Come." I looked up. Margot was standing next to me with her hand outstretched. "Dance with me."
I hesitated.
She smiled at me and I looked at her hand.
I could still feel the energetic, feverish joy pulsing through my body.
"Okay," I placed my hand in hers, I'd been longing to get on the dance floor all night.
Margot's grin grew bigger as I stood up from my chair and followed her out onto the dance floor.
¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥
We found an empty-ish part of the dance floor.
The song had now changed to a funky, upbeat, 90s track.
Margot let go of my hand. We spun, bopped, circled and clapped.
I started doing disco arms to the beat. Margot laughed out loud.
"Riley you do have some of the weirdest dance moves."
My eyes shone, "What you don't like them? How about this one." I started moving my hips wildly like I was doing the hullahoop.
Margot held her ribs in laughter. "Riley stop, you're embarrassing yourself."
I knew that a lot of people were probably watching me. But for some reason I didn't care. All my filters were gone.
I plugged my nose and started doing the scuba diver dance. At this, Margot moved in close to me and clutched my left arm, which was halfway in the air.
"Stop." She pleaded.
I met her startling green eyes.
She stared at me, still holding my arm, her other hand was placed on my shoulder.
She was giving me the ernest, please stop or I'll die from public humiliation look.
I grinned at her. "You're no fun."
She rolled her eyes at me as I let go of my nose and lowered my arm. She didn't release my arm though.
"You're drunk."
I huffed in irritation. "I am not."
She raised a disbelieving eyebrow.
"What's your full name."
"Riley Ashton Mace."
"Who am I?"
I rolled my eyes, did she seriously believe that she to do this. "Margot Saunders. You're my ex girlfriend."
I was hoping that the last part of the sentence would encourage her to stop asking questions.
She didn't.
"Who's your current girlfriend?"
"Margot!" I said throwing my hands up in exasperation, I wanted to continue dancing, "Stop with the interrogation, I'm fine."
I could tell she didn't believe me.
She finally let go of my arm and I continued dancing on to the beat. The fact that dance floor was starting to clear out because a lot of the guests were heading outside to have dinner, didn't even phase me. I just kept going.
I had all the energy in the world.
I was just in the middle of my electric guitar solo when Margot sighed, "I'm tired I think I'm going to sit down."
She turned to go, but before she could move I grabbed her arm. She look at me in surprise. I had no idea what I was doing, but I pulled her back towards me.
"Riley-"
"You're the one who wanted to dance." I said twirling her around. "So dance with me."
"I told you," she protested as I spun her out then pulled her back in towards me, "I'm tired."
"Sounds like excuses to me," I breathed looking down at her. I laughed at the indignant look on her face.
The song suddenly changed.
It was a slow song. A man with a soothing, silky kind of voice, that I recognized as Mateo Lopez, started singing.
I looked around, a few people got up from their seats and came to slow dance. But for the most part the dance floor was completely empty.
I let my hands drop to my side allowing Margot to walk away. She didn't have to stay if she didn't want to.
Margot didn't move.
I looked at her, "Aren't you tired." I muttered. The truth is, part of me wanted her to stay.
She smiled at me, her eyes sparkling in the dim light. "One last dance shouldn't hurt?"
"Exactly," I nodded, "Do it for a friend."
Margot gazed at me for a second. Then she stepped forward and placed her arms around my neck.
I took a sharp breath. There was a tingly sensation at the back of my brain. Something was telling me to stop, but it was so feint that the words of Mateo Lopez filtered in on top.
Te quiero mi amor.
Margot put my arms around her waist. I could feel the blood pulsing in my head.
No hay amor como el tuyo.
We swayed slowly on the dance floor. I couldn't stop looking into her eyes.
El tiempo no es nuestro enemigo.
Someone dimmed the lights even further, now there were just the silver stars from the projector glittering on the ceiling.
Mi por siempre esta contigo.
I stopped staring at the ceiling and looked back at Margot.
"I wish I understood Spanish." I joked. I had absolutely no idea what Mr Mateo Lopez was saying. "For all we know he could be singing about burning down a retirement village."
She laughed and twirled me around. "Thank God he isn't."
I furrowed my eyebrows. "You understand Spanish?"
"Riley, my mom's maiden name is Rodríguez."
"Oh right." I bit my lip feeling rather dumb, I forgot her mom was from Argentina. I spun her around again. "Alright then, daughter of Rodríguez, what this guy saying?" I jabbed my thumb in the air.
Margot bit her lip and glanced up at the ceiling stars.
No hay amor como el tuyo.
"There is no love like yours." She translated for me.
El tiempo no es nuestro enemigo.
"Time is not our enemy." I bit my lip and spun Margot outwards. I was starting to regret having asked for a translation.
The little thing nagging at the back of my brain was beginning to get stronger and the electrical pulsation from the punch in my body was slowly calming down.
Margot spun back into my body. My arm lay across her chest and I could feel her heart beating.
Mi por siempre esta contigo
"M-my forever is with you."
I said nothing.
Te quiero mi amor.
She tilted her head backwards and met my eyes. Our faces were inches apart. Too close. "I want you, my love."
I quickly released her, stopping our bodies from being pressed together, and stepping back. Margot turned around to face me.
She was still so close.
We looked at each other. And for some reason I found myself drinking in how beautiful she was.
In my heart I really hoped she found someone who seriously cared about her, all I wanted was for her to be happy.
Then to my surprise, Margot cupped my face in her hand. She chuckled at the startled look on my face, but didn't drop her hand. Instead she ran her hand along the side of my face, back, towards my hair.
"I can't believe you still have these in." She ran her hand along the braids that were tied up to my pony.
I shrugged. "I didn't have time to take them out."
Margot stepped forward. I tensed. But I couldn't move!
She pulled out my pony tale, letting my hair fall down across my shoulders, the braids hanging losely in my face.
Then she brought her hand up and with the simplest motion, slowly started undoing braid after braid.
So I stood there on the dance floor, too woozy to move, letting her gently slide her fingers through my hair.
The buzzing sensation still in my head.
