24. Double Trouble
As I walked into Marsha's Diner I kept reminding myself of what Tina had said.
Don't do anything. Don't make any advances, don't let Margot make any advances.
It hurt. But it was true, things had already escalated enough already.
And after our shared moment in the photobooth I was unsure of how far Margot and I could take things if we got the chance.
Marsha's diner was a small restaurant on the edge of town, just after the park. It was kind of like every other fast food restaurant I'd seen. Comfy red seats, checkered floors, TV's playing soccer in the top corners.
I wasn't sure why Emmanual had chosen this place for the double date. It certainly wasn't fancy or anything.
I'd sent Skyler the details and we'd agreed to just meet there. I prayed that it wouldn't be awkward. But with me it seemed awkwardness was inevitable.
I spotted Margot and Emmanual sitting at one of the booths in a far corner. I made my way over and sat down opposite them.
"Hello Riley!" Emmanual greeted me cheerily. I exchanged the greeting.
"Where's your date?" Margot remarked smugly, gesturing at the empty seat next to me.
"Dont worry she's coming." I said politely. Margot rolled her eyes.
Emmanual started making conversation. I didn't really participate, I sat there awkwardly watching Margot and Emmanual talk. Margot would keep looking at me out of the corner of her eye, I could tell she wasn't really listening to what Emmanual was saying.
"How's your sister?" I looked up. I was actually interested in this question.
"Yeah? How is Claire?" I asked.
Margot sipped her ice-water "She's fine. She's living quite lavishly. My mom says that she's not going to have trouble buying petrol anytime soon. I don't know what that means but I assume she's earning well."
That made me happy, I was glad that Claire was doing well.
"Do you think she'll come back?" I was curious to know if she had moved permanently.
"Probably to visit." She replied. "But I'm not sure if she'd move back to live here."
I nodded.
A waitress came up to our table. "Are you ready to order?" I checked her name tag, Paula.
"Yes." Emmanual replied," but.. uhh," He looked at me asking if I wanted to order without my date.
I stopped playing with the salt shaker in my hands and put it down.
"Yes we can order." I agreed.
Margot ordered ribs and chips, Emmanual ordered a burger and chips, I ordered.... A toasted sandwich - and chips.
I wasn't particularly hungry. Margot and Emmanual took away my appetite.
I was just thinking about what would be my easiest method of escape when Margot spoke up.
"Oh 'Manual," I sniggered. She called him Manual! Like a booklet you get with the instructions to a washing machine. Margot arched a questing eyebrow at me. Emmanual was also looking in my direction. I picked up the salt shaker again.
"I still have your ID card."
I didn't want to ask why Margot had his ID.
"Oh yes!" Emmanual said quickly. "Yeah I need that back."
Margot took a bite of her ribs. She covered her mouth and said, "It's in my purse in my bag under the table." She put her rib down. "I would get it myself but my hands are covered in rib juice."
Emmanual bent down, rummaged in her bag and pulled out her blue and pink purse. Margot picked up a serviette and started wiping around her mouth.
I sighed as I picked up another chip and dragged it through the blob of tomatoe sauce. I was wondering if Skyler was going to get here anytime soon. Or if she was even coming at all?
"I found it." Emmanual said matterafactly. "Ooo what's this?"
I looked up to see what he was talking about.
I felt my stomach lurch!
Emmanual was pulling out the card from the photobooth!
I dropped the chip from my hand onto the plate and Margot and I each exchanged a look of horror as Emmanual turned the card around to look at it!
At first he looked at it smiling but as his eyes ran down the length of the card his smile slowly disappeared.
"What the-" He began as he frowned down at the card in his hand. I wondered why Margot hadn't leant over and snatched it out of his hand! She was hastily trying to wipe the rib sauce off her fingers.
Emmanual sat their staring down at the card. He looked up and first looked at Margot and then he directed his attention to me. Immediately I felt myself cave inwards as I saw the look of hurt and confusion displayed across his face.
Emmanual chucked the card onto the table. I saw the last picture of Margot and I in a passionate lip-lock. I gulped, I wasn't quite sure what to do. Should I take the card? Should I give it to Margot? It couldn't just sit there!
Margot threw her serviette aside, leant over and grabbed the photo card.
Emmanual looked at her, "Do you want to explain?" I could hear the hurt in his voice.
This was exactly what I wanted to avoid! I told Margot to put that card somewhere safe! I had a feeling something like this could happen!
"'Manual. I-" She tried to explain. But she couldn't find the words.
I felt my heart going a hundred beats a second. What was going to happen? Was he going to be mad and shout at her?
Was he going to shout at me?
Both Margot and I sat there looking at him, waiting for Emmanual to do or say something!
"Hello everyone!"
Skyler interupted the nauseatingly-still silence. She had finally arrived. All the attention was suddenly focused on her.
She was wearing all black with red lace up boots, all her piercings were in and her hair was in a pixie style. She even wore black lipstick.
"Sorry I'm late." She said as she slid into the seat next to me.
I swallowed the lump that had developed in my throat. "Uh I-its fine."
The tension between Margot and Emmanual was unbearable! Emmanual sat there just looking at his plate, he didn't try eat the rest of his burger.
I tried to make conversation.
"So." I said to Skyler. "What caught you up?"
"The rounding up of banished souls took longer than I'd thought."
I laughed nervously. I was relieved that she had finally arrived.
"Here's a menu." I said handing her one.
"No thanks. I ate before I got here."
Why would she do that? It was a dinner double date.
Eventually after a bit more conversation from just me and Skyler, Margot asked for the bill.
Once we had paid, the four of us went outside the diner. Where Skyler lit a cigarette.
"You smoke?" I asked pretty repulsed. I didn't like smoking.
"I'm trying to break the habit." She said as she breathed a puff of smoke into the night air.
Emmanual and Margot were a few meters to the side. They seemed to be in a deep discussion.
I couldn't help but try and hear what they were talking about. Emmanual had seen the photo of Margot and I making out at the carnival.
Would he break up with her?
"What's up with them?" Skyler's voice interrupted my thoughts.
I looked at her and shrugged. "Tensions I guess."
"Hmm." She mumbled as she dropped her cigarette to the ground and squashed it into the tar with the heel of her boot. "That's why I stopped dating guys. Always drama."
I wanted to tell her that this time the guy had nothing to do with it and it was completely on the girls!
Emmanual and Margot had stopped talking and they came over to us.
"Right!" Emmanual clapped his hands together. I was trying to look at Margot and see if I could figure out whether they'd broken up or not. "This was nice. Thank you ladies." Emmanual stroked his arm down Margot's back.
They were still together. Great.
"Yeah." Skyler agreed. "It was chilled." She turned to me. "Thanks."
Then before I knew what was happening she closed the space between us and connected our lips!
I could practically feel lazers from Margot's eyes incinerating her skull!
Skyler lips were chapped and she smelt like stale Tobacco.
She pulled back and smiled up at me. "Bye Riley."
Then she turned and headed down the cobble stone pavement.
I resisted whiping my hand over my mouth, I couldn't do that with Margot and Emmanual right there.
I hadn't enjoyed that at all. Basically because she wasn't the girl that I wanted to be kissing.
"I just need to go use the men's room." Emmanual said, making his way back into the diner.
I looked at Margot. I thought she might pulverise me on the spot! Her stone cold eyes bore right into me!
"How was I supposed to know that she'd do that!" I protested.
"You could've pushed her back!"
"And embarrassed her like that! In front of you two! Things have already been bad enough tonight."
Margot folded her arms.
"Margot you have no right to be angry. You and Emmanual are still together! I saw Emmanual stroke your back!" I marched up towards her. "Even though the universe had given you the perfect opportunity to end it all!"
"And what!? Break up with Emmanual, and tell him that the girl I actually like is just busy making out with Dracula's wife a few meters away!"
"Hey don't say that! Skyler's actually pretty cool."
Margot's nostrils flared and her eyes bulged! I instantly regretted defending Skyler.
"SO WHY DONT YOU JUST GO OUT WITH HER SINCE YOU OBVIOUSLY THINK SHE'S SO COOL!"
Margot was yelling at me, and I was desperately trying to get her to shut up! There was the chance that Emmanual would walk onto our conversation at any second!
Our argument was already drawing attention! Two teenage girls shouting in the parking lot and one of them going completely ballistic!
My desperate hand gestures did nothing to calm Margot down.
"WHY DO YOU EVEN LIKE HER! SHE'S A PLAYER AND A DRUGGY! YOU THINK SHE'S HOT! DON'T YOU!"
"No don't think Skyler's hot and even if I did, I'm not going to start dating her!" I shouted back at Margot.
"WHY NOT!"
"BECAUSE I LOVE YOU!"
¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥
The echo of the words that I had shouted carried through the still night air.
Margot stood there, staring at me. I thought my heart might burst out of my chest!
I didn't mean to tell her I loved her. It sort of just...
Erupted.
After a moments silence Margot asked.
"Y- you what?" She said softy.
"Margot," I breathed. "I'm sorry that I put pressure on you to break up with Emmanual and I'm sorry you had to see me and Skyler kiss."
I locked eyes with her. "But I love you. And I don't want to be with anyone else. No matter how 'cool' they are."
Margot blinked at me and then she opened her mouth to say something.
"Right I guess we should get going." Emmanual walked up to us.
I gritted my teeth. I swear he had the worst timing!
He placed a generous arm around Margot's shoulders. Margot didn't move, she was frozen, still staring at me. Like she didn't even notice his presence.
Emmanual looked down at her and noticed her staring. He gave me a suspicious look and then squeezed her shoulders to snap her out of it.
"Okay," Emmanual said smiling at Margot. "Let's get you home." He looked at me. "Riley I can give you lift if you want?"
I shook my head. "N-no thank you." I couldn't think over the rapid beating of my heart. "I'll take a cab."
He nodded and I stole one last glance at Margot before they turned around and walked away to the car.
