16. Dodgeballs
"Margot!" I called, pushing past the people in the hallway.
It was Monday morning and I was trying to get Margot's attention so we could talk about what was happening between us.
I really needed clarity. This whole situation was very confusing.
Margot turned around, "What." She said flatly.
The girl that she'd been talking to eyed me skeptically. She said that she'd meet Margot at break and walked away.
I leaned against the green lockers and looked at Margot.
"Well good morning to you too." I muttered as I rolled my eyes.
"Sorry." Margot sighed closing her locker. Then in a slightly happier voice said. "What?"
"Um..." I glanced at the floor. Then looked back at her. "I want to talk.. you know about... What's going on... between us-"
Before I could properly get my sentence out, Margot grabbed my wrist, yanked my arm and pulled me across the hallway and into the janitors storage room!
She slammed the door shut and flicked on the light.
"Wow." I breathed, slightly winded from the sudden rush of movement. As I took a step I accidentally tripped over a bucket.
I could see Margot looking at me out of the corner of my eye, as I carefully placed the bucket the right way up.
She folded her arms and sighed deeply. I ignored her. I was trying to straighten up a stack of brooms. They looked lopsided.
"Riley." She said slowly as if picking her words carefully. "You don't know what you want."
"What?" I said, the stack of brooms came crashing to the ground. I winched and jumped quickly out of the way.
Margot didn't flinch. She sighed again.
It was like we were back on page one!
I took a step towards her, it was actually quite spacious in the little storage room.
I frowned at her. "What do you mean I don't know what I want?"
"Riley," She sighed, "You've crushed on Claire for years! You were practically in love with her. In fact you you probably still do have some feelings-"
"I told you I'm over her!" I protested.
"Really?"
"Yes."
"Well even if you're over her that doesn't mean..." Her voice trailed off.
"Doesn't mean what?"
"That you like me." Her eyes met mine.
I processed this.
Margot was cool and I did like going over to her house every Friday to watch Montrose Mansions. But did I actually like her? Like that?
"Riley." She said softly. "You don't like me."
"What?" I furrowed my eyebrows. "But I didn't say anything."
"Yeah." She looked away sadly. "Exactly."
"I was trying to think what to say!" I exclaimed. "I-"
"Riley I have a boyfriend."
My mouth dropped open in horror, I stared at her. A slap on the face would have felt better!
Margot has a boyfriend! I didn't even have to ask who, because I knew exactly who it was!
I could feel my blood pressure rising.
"WHAT!" I shouted at her. "You're dating Emmanual!"
She looked at the floor and mumbled a, "Yes."
"And you didn't even tell me!"
"It didn't come up."
"Oh how about last night when you were asking me to get all cozy with you!"
I had to stop myself from kicking the bucket, I was hurt, I felt like punching the wall.
I didn't even know why I was so angry. Margot could have a boyfriend. It wasn't like we were together.
I looked up at the ceiling and took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down.
"So what," I snorted, "You guys go on one date and suddenly you're a couple?"
She shrugged "He asked me if I wanted to be his girlfriend."
"And you said yes? You don't even like him!"
"It's not like anyone else was going to ask me out!" She snapped back.
I retreated a step.
My heart felt like stone.
The fire of fury inside of me was instantly extinguished. Margot's words had hit me.
"I'm sorry for getting so worked up." I slumped against the wall. All my energy was gone.
The bell for the end of break rang.
"It's fine Riley." Margot turned to leave.
"So what," I muttered, "That's it? We're just going to leave things like this?"
"Riley..." She started.
I grabbed her hand to stop her from opening the door and leaving.
"You can't just walk out!" I pleaded.
She locked eyes with me and for a few seconds just stared into my eyes. I saw the truth. She wasn't happy being with Emmanual.
Then she stepped forward, took my face in her hands and brought our lips together!
There's was that feeling again.
Like a thousand fireworks going off in my head.
I moved and placed my hands on her face, deepening the kiss.
Then as quickly as it had happened it was over. Margot pulled away. She looked at me for a second then turned and left the little storage room.
I stood there in silence, blinking after her, trying to wash the wave of dizziness out of my head.
A feeling of longing tugged at my heart, wishing that the kiss hadn't ended, wishing that she was still here with me.
I took a deep breath and left the storage room and grudgingly made my way to my physical education class.

"Riley you're late!" Miss Barnes barked at me as I entered the gym.
"Yes, sorry miss." I said unapologetically.
I had been so distracted about what had happened with Margot that I'd put my gym shorts on inside out.
"Don't do it again!" Miss Barnes pointed a beefy finger at the court. "You're on Leo's team."
I sighed as I dragged myself to the right side of the line. I hated Dodgeball. Good thing my friend Tina was there as well.
"Hey." I said.
"What's up with your shorts." She noticed immediately.
"I wasn't paying attention when I put them on."
"Hmm." She mused, "I can see that. Oh where were you at break?"
"Oh I was Um. Catching up on an assignment." I bluffed.
She arched an eyebrow. I could tell she didn't believe me. "Well you missed-"
"Ready!" Miss Barnes shouted from the side. "Start!" She blew her shrill whistle that sounded like a fork on a black board.
Balls started flying towards us. Tina and I were at the back so we didn't really get any action.
Slowly, more and more of our team members got hit and sent to the bench.
I wish I wasn't so distracted about Margot so I would have seen the giant red ball hurtling towards me.
It hit me right in the stomach and I crumpled to the ground like a deflated bouncy house.
"Oooooo. Bad luck." Tina said as I lay moaning on the ground.
"Riley you're out!" I could hear Miss Barnes' voice.
Feeling like my guts had just been punched out of me, I crawled my way over to the benches on the side.
Margot was going out with Emmanual.
I now kind of wished I hadn't told her that I didn't like her, that afternoon with when she'd first kissed me after the popcorn war.
I didn't know how exactly I felt towards Margot. But I did know that... I would really like to kiss her again.
