15. Late night mission
My alarm buzzer rang. I slammed a limp hand on the button to shut it up.
Wearily I sat up and checked the time. 11:30 pm.
Good.
I listened carefully to hear if anyone was still awake.
Satisfied by the silence, I cautiously climbed out of bed and crept down the hallway.
I had slept in some loose fitting, comfortable clothes.
I snuck out of the house and slipped down the road towards Margot's house.
This was madness I know. I was crazy and if my mother found out I would be jailed in my house forever and completely banned from the Saunders.
But I couldn't wait anymore I had to speak to Margot.
The night was dark but the crescent moon illuminated the road ahead.
When I got to the Saunders' house I went around the side of it. Upon leaving the house earlier that afternoon I'd noticed again, the giant tree leading up to Margot's room.
It had seemed easy enough to climb in the day time but at night the tree loomed above me like some monster.
Gritting my teeth I grabbed the lowest branch and heaved myself up.
It was a challenge, groping around in the dark looking for the next branch.
I was so thankful Margot's room was the one with the balcony. This would've been so much harder if it wasn't.
Finally I reached the balcony and hopped down onto the landing.
Now I just prayed that Margot wasn't someone who locked themselves in at night or else this would've all been for nothing.
Thankfully she wasn't, and I slid open the bedroom door, emitting a loud squeak!
I flinched and prayed no one had heard it. Luckily no one seemed to.
I entered the room.
This could either look like a scene from a horror movie or a scene from Romeo and Juliet, I thought to myself.
Personally I wanted it to look like Romeo and Juliet.
Quickly I made my way over to Margot's bedroom door and lightly closed it shut. We didn't want to wake up the rest of the family.
Then I went over to her bed and shook her softly.
"Margot." I whispered. "Margot." I shook her slightly harder.
Her eyes shot open, wide in fright! She opened her mouth to scream!
I lunged and clamped my hand over her mouth!
A closed door would serve as nothing if she were to scream!
"Shhhhh!" I whispered hurriedly.
She bit my hand.
"Ouch!" I yanked my hand away.
Margot switched on the bedside light. She spun around to face me, reveling her intruder.
"Riley!" She yelped, barely trying to whisper. "What the hell are you doing here!"
"It's a bit extreme I know bu-"
"Extreme! This is Ludicrous!" Margot practically shrieked.
I placed a finger on my lips telling her to please keep it down!
She stubbornly folded her arms.
"I know. I know. I'm sorry." I apologized. "I just had to see you."
She arched a skeptical eyebrow. "Why?"
"To talk." Her eyebrow lifted higher. "I wanted to talk to you but I couldn't yesterday because you were on your date. And I couldn't today because when I came over you weren't home."
"Wait." She unfolded her arms. "You came over today?"
I nodded.
"Was Claire home?"
I rolled my eyes. "Ya. She told me that you'd be home soon so I waited. Then she started taking advantage of me and eventually I'd had enough so... I kind of told her what I think."
Margot's eyes widened. "What did you tell her?"
I shrugged, "I don't like her taking advantage me, I didn't like how she was dishonest in her relationships, and that I think she should be a better sister to you."
"You seriously said that?" Margot's mouth hung open in shock. I nodded. "Wow." She sighed. "I didn't think you had it in you."
"Yeah well I'm over her so-"
Margot raised her eyebrows. "Wow. I never thought I'd ever hear Riley Mace say that." I grinned. "It's about time!" She rolled her eyes.
I pushed her. "I still think she's gorgeous though."
A pillow whammed me in the face.
"Opps sorry." Margot shrugged.
I chuckled and moved the pillow aside. "I didn't come here at 12 in the morning to fight you again."
"Why did you come? To watch Montrose Mansion?" She said mockingly.
That reminded me.
"Oh how was your date with Emmanual?"
Margot sighed, "Uh" She averted her eyes. "Let's not talk about that."
"Okay." I said not wanting to push it further.
She looked at me. I was lying next to her, pressing myself up on my elbows, whilst I played with the edge of her blue pillow case.
"Margot..." I asked.
She sighed. "Yeah."
I met her eyes. Just then I realised that her eyes were slightly red and puffy. She must have cried herself to sleep.
My heart stung at the thought.
I wanted to ask why she'd kissed me again.
"Did you cry yourself to sleep tonight?" I asked instead. There was still a far off, distant, sad look on her face.
There was a moment of silence.
"Riley?" She asked softly.
"Yeah?"
"Can you hold me?"
I was a bit taken a back by the question.
"Sure." I said.
I wanted to comfort her.
"Thanks." She snuggled down and I quickly kicked off my shoes and climbed into the bed, wrapping my arms around her.
A smile tugged at my lips. This felt nice, it felt natural in a way.
I pulled her closer. At first she resisted a little but after a while she gave in. She snuggled closer placing her head against my chest and wrapping her arm around my waist.
And before I even knew it, I was asleep.

My eyes opened to the morning light shining brightly in my face. Margot and I were still in the same position we were in when we fell asleep.
Wrapped in each others arms.
I looked at the clock on the bedside table. It was 5 am. I had to get back home before anyone noticed I was gone.
Slowly I released myself from Margot's embrace. I didn't want to leave.
Margot stirred and her eyes opened. I felt bad, she look so peaceful when she was asleep.
"I have to go home. I'm sorry."
She smiled weakly and closed her eyes again.
Satisfied, I got out of the bed, put on my shoes and went to climb over the balcony.
